Why does ITV have handsome male leads while the femals leads are so drab

I have seen Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park so far, and honestly, JJ Field and "Edmund" are 10x better looking than their female counterparts and better actors too. And, sorry, but I cannot stand the lady who plays "Catherine Morland." And although the novels have been picturized very romantically, some of the romance fizzles when you have actors that don't really gel well together.

The Boy With No Name-->Travis-->Awesome!

I think Felicity Jones is rather adorable and embodies the character quite well. JJ Fields is attractive mainly because of the role, but outside of it I don't find him that appealing.

As for Mansfield Park I agree, the actor who plays Edmund (and also Mr. Elton in the Emma series) is pretty attractive, whereas Fanny (Billie) has a very distracting face because of her teeth/mouth area. I've re-watched the majority of the period films I've seen but that version I won't bother.

I found JJ Field and Frelicity to be equally attractive. Felicity is very pretty compared to some other casting of Austen heroines like Sally Hawkins and Billie Piper, their mouths are distracting, sorry to say. But in this movie, the casting that really bothered me is John Thorpe, he is very ....unpleasant looking.

I agree tara_r_a. Feilds is very charming, and attractive, and Jones is very pretty IMO.

Sally Hawkins did a nice job with her role in Persuasion, but I have to confess, her hair was pulled back so severely, that it was not at all flattering. And, unfortunately, it also looked greasy, and that bothered me quite a bit. I suspected it may have been from styling products to keep her hair up, but it just didn't look clean to me.

John Thorpe did have a "wolfish" look to him, I think it was his teeth that gave me that impression...but having something a bit "off" that seems to fit the character. I'd have been leery of him if I were Catherine.

Seriously? There're some gorgeous actresses in this!

The difference is that in the past women didn't wear makeup. In Jane Austen's era, only prostitutes painted their faces, and it was not considered a beautiful look.

What you might call "ugly" is natural beauty. If men don't have to be made-up, why should women?

Seriously? Felicity Jones is gorgeous!!!

Also, you are shallow if that is all that you care about.

Tough luck, chinless

Felicity Jones is gorgeous, I love her. She and JJ Feild make a good couple in this one.

because we are used to men looking normal. where as lots of women use lots of makeup and hairstyles to look hotter. take this away and they are pretty plain. its like when you see photos of women in the best. they all look mediocre
