Why does ITV have handsome male leads while the femals leads are so drab

I have seen Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park so far, and honestly, JJ Field and "Edmund" are 10x better looking than their female counterparts and better actors too. And, sorry, but I cannot stand the lady who plays "Catherine Morland." And although the novels have been picturized very romantically, some of the romance fizzles when you have actors that don't really gel well together.

Neither Catherine nor Fanny are supposed to be beautiful. Catherine is considered "almost pretty" and Fanny said to be pretty, but neither one a great looker. Henry Tilney is described like Catherine and said to be "very near handsome," I haven't seen either of the films yet, so can't comment on the sparks between the actors; but personally I think JJ Feilds isn't all that attractive from his pictures, although I do think Felicity Jones is quite cute. Edmund is considered well-looking and handsome, so the actor fits the part; as for Billie Piper, you might not consider her attractive, but she was on FHM's 100 Sexiest Women list five times, so obviously other people do.

John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

To OP:

Felicity Jones is gorgeous - I don't know which actress you saw portraying Catherine Morland.

To Coldwindtovalhalla:

Just saw the pics you posted, and you are right, she is not that bad looking--better than average atleast. Maybe, the in the movie, the way her hair was styled and her clothing played down her beauty.

Billie Piper mat be sexy in modern time, she looks however really weird in the
period drama.

JJ Feild may not that handsome in the picture, that is why i wasn't interested in it first. But after I watched it on youtube in a boring day, i was hooked. Mr.Tilney by JJ is much more charming than I thought. His smiling eyes and witty laughs are so charming.

And Felicity Jones is just as cute and pretty as a female role should be. She really features the image of innocent Catherine.

Anyway, this is a delightful drama!!

With Billie Piper--that is exactly the reason why I found her unsuitable for a period drama. She's sexy by modern standards, but back then, her too short hair and portruding teeeth would have been looked down upon.

As to "Catherine Morland" (forgive me, but I always forget the actress's name!)--maybe she is cute, pretty, etc physically and I failed to notice it as I watched it on youtube. But, I felt that she overdid her "cuteness"--in many scenes (cannot recall particular ones), I was groaning at her clueless, toothy smile and her shallow acting. The character of Catherine is indeed shallow and innocent but not dopey and thickheaded and that was the notion given off sometimes by the actress's portrayal. She did however redeem herself much in that very last scene which was very, well, cute :)
And, indeed, she is certainly not ugly, but I still feel that JJ Field is far better looking.

Edwardian? Not quite. Austen lived between 1775-1817 the Georgian/Regency period of history, which is when the books were set. The first draft of the book which was to become Northanger Abbey was written in approximately 1798.

If you want to see madly inaccurate costumes, take a peep at the 1940 Hollywood version of Pride & Prejudice. The costume designer apparently didn't think Empire line dresses were attractive, so the women are wearing crinoline dresses but the men are in Regency dress. Totally laughable!

The Edwardian era is when Queen Victoria's son Edward VII ruled--from 1901 to 1910. So yes, Edwardian costumes would look very different from Victorian or Georgian.

Neither can I. I'd always wondered what Miss Bingley meant when she said about Elizabeth Bennet that "her teeth are tolerable, I suppose", but now I know, because this Catherine had intolerable teeth! ;) But besides that, she seemed peevish, and when she was supposed to play sad, sounded like she was throwing a tantrum...
Good film, except for the leading actress, and the hurried ending!

Travis rock.

I think Felicity Jones is perfectly casted as Catherine. I don't think JJ Feild is that handsome either. He was very charming in the movie and I like his Henry very much. But 10x better looking than Felicity? Certainly not. I think Felicity is quite pretty as Catherine and I think her look match her character.

Neither characters were described in the book as extremely good-looking.

I think the biggest miscast is Catherine Walker instead. Her acting's fine, but, Eleanor is not that old. She looks like Henry elder sister instead of younger sister. She looks like in her 30s (which Catherine Walker really is).

Indeed, I think the actress who played Eleanor Tilney and the actress who played Isabella Thorpe ought to have swapped roles.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I thought Felicity Jones was beautiful, and the more I saw her, the more I thought so. JJ Feilds, on the other hand, perfectly matched the book's description of Henry - "If not handsome, very near." At first I was kind of "Meh" about him - even if I found him very amusing, I couldn't say I found him terribly handsome. In the end, I was swooning away just like Catherine!

(As for Mansfield Park, Billie Piper took some getting used to. She has a very modern, sexy kind of beauty - not at all like the innocent Fanny Price I pictured.)

Do you honestly feel that actresses like Felicity Jones, Carey Mulligan, Catherine Walker, and Sally Hawkins are unattractive? Please name some who you think are attractive.

I'm so tired of the same half-dozen lip-injected, anorexic female models who appear in most Hollywood movies, these fresh faces in U.K. productions are a welcome change.

i've seen persuasion & NA so far.
the male leads are clearly more accomplished actors than their leading ladies.
sally hawkins in persuasion was good, better than felicity jones in NA- although i think jones is gorgeous.

Cordelia Flyte (Brideshead) should be a great role for her: I don't think she should be judged by this production.
