Anybody else wish Will Ferrell had played Dewey Cox?

The humor of this movie is SO Will Ferrell. I think Ferrell would have been perfect to play Dewey Cox. Nothing against John C. Reilly, but I like Reilly better as a supporting actor than as a lead actor.

I liked this movie, but I think I would have loved it with Will Ferrel playing Dewey. Anyone else feel this way?

No. Ever seen Step Brothers? It starred both of them and it was also quite hilarious. But in that movie Ferrell was the one who sings. And I'm sorry but he really can't, period.

reply

Nah. Reilly killed it; the part was pretty much made for him.
Plus, as others have already said, Will can't sing like John can.

I'm sorry but no way in hell. John owned the role. This movie actually helped me realize how much I was sick of Will.

I remember growing up magic in movies my imagination on fire I can still see some of that magic.

NO! As much as I love Will Ferrell, this movie needed John C. Reilly. He began as a dramatic actor & didn't move onto his first real comedy until a while in his career, while Ferrell started doing nothing but comedies & did his first dramatic film later. Reilly can go from comedy to drama, sometimes in the same scene, which is something that he can do exponentially better than Ferrell. Just look at Boogie Nights & Magnolia for proof.

Not at all. Similar spoofs to this one fail either because the lead actor is a so-so singer, the music is crap, or both. You can't believe that such a person, band etc. could ever be mega-popular.

John C. Reilly is a fantastic singer in real life as well as in the film, and the music is top-notch. You could believe the songs and Dewey could get famous. But it's Dewey's private life away from the stage that provides the laughs.

"The humor of this movie is SO Will Ferrell'' in other words it's pure garbage

The reason why this movie worked is that the cast and crew played it straight. I'm not saying Will's movies are bad, but they're a different style. He and the people who works with him indirectly wink at the audience. This movie's script was written to be the opposite.

That being said, I disagree with the other users in the thread. I think he's a pretty good singer. Not as good as John, but still. And I didn't just see STEP BROTHERS; I saw THE PRODUCERS and his musical numbers at the Oscars.

No way! Then it would be just another ho-hum Will Ferrell movie with predictably the same character he plays almost every time. Instead we have a John C. Reilly standout performance, and he was smart enough to play it straight and ironically managed to pull off a leading role in a genre (satire) he's not well known for (except maybe Boogie Nights). And as mentioned numerous times his singing voice was perfecto. Watch the unrated director's cut, it doesn't give you a hangover, it gives you a boner ;-)

God no. Reilly is way funnier than Farrell. Farrell is horribly overrated playing the same person over and over and over.
