I saw the extended version of The Town:

I saw the extended version of The Town, which provided more closure than the original theatrical version.

For one thing, when Claire was harassed by two guys from the projects, it was revealed exactly who they were, and Jem and Doug, through a go-between drug dealer named Kenny, found out where the two guys who'd harassed Claire lived, broke down their apartment door, and beat the crap out of both of them, and permanently crippled one of them.

Also, more towards the beginning of the film, there were a whole bunch of people near the Charlestown housing project watching while the van that Doug and his friends had driven from the North End back to Charlestown after robbing a North End Bank, got torched, and none of the Townies watching the van burn would answer when FBI Agt. Frawley asked if anybody had seen who'd lit the van on fire.

More towards the end, when Doug MacRay was about to get into his car to head off for Florida, he met up with the 2 Dominican guys (who'd also been working for Fergie, the drug dealer) whose apartment he and Jem and broken into, beat up, shot, and permanently injured one of them. When one of them asked Doug MacRay for the money that he had, and where Jem was, Doug told the two Dominican guys that Jem wasn't there, he had ten thousand dollars, which he offered to them, but they wouldn't accept.

When Doug asked the Dominican guy who he'd permanently crippled by shooting him in the leg, "HOw's your leg?", the Dominican guy shot and killed Doug, on the spot, despite Doug having said that he'd get into his car, and that they'd never see him again.

Doug left money for Claire to do what she wanted to do with it, and he left Krista (who was a drug and alcohol addled mess with an infant daughter.) a duffle bag of cash so that she could take care of herself and her daughter, Shane.

Claire spent the money on the renovation of the Charlestown skating rink, after having taken the money that Doug had hidden in Claire's garden for her, and she had her own personal memorial for Doug in her Charlestown Condominium.

Having said all of the above, the Extended version of The Town provided much more closure than the other 2 cuts of "The Town" did. It proved that escaping, or attempting to escape a bad upbringing in a bad environment was way easier said than done. The fact that Doug and his accomplices all ended up dead, at least in part due to Krista's having ratted them out to FBI Agt. Frawley, due to Doug's having rejected her for Claire, also provided more closure, and while the romance between Doug and Claire was too developed for my liking, I admittedly liked the extended version of "The Town" way better than the original theatrical version of "The Town", which had a lot of holes in it.

The extended version of "The Town", however, pointed out that Krista, despite being a drug and alcohol addled/addicted mess, was far more involved in the business of bank robbing than the original theatrical version made her out to be.

I've only seen the theatrical version. I just watched it for the fourth time. I really like it, but that ending in the extended version sounds much better.

I agree that the ending in the Extended version of "The Town" is way better, because it provides more closure to this movie. I thought that the theatrical version of "The Town" was full of holes, if one gets the drift.

reply

The other version I take it is on the DVD?
I always wondered if there was more because there is a really important scene in the trailer that was not in the film.

reply

Which version of "The Town" did you see? Just wondering, because the theatrical film version has a lot of holes in it.

I also think that both the Extended version and the original theatrical version of "The Town" are both on DVD.

I saw it when it came out. I love heist movies - especially the French ones - but what got me to see the movie was a scene in the trailer that was crucial to the movie and it was omitted. I never thought there was an extended version only a overly edited original. It’s been 12 years and now I know. So, thank you. I think in the book Prince of Thieves, the ending is not so good and I kind of hoped for a better ending which the movie had - but it is a little implausible that she doesn’t actually turn the money in since the FBI has their eye on her and the loot was a result of a robbery at the bank where she was the manager. Either that or risk doing a lot time while he’s on a river somewhere in Tangerine. The theatrical version does have holes (especially with his mother) but all in all, it is very entertaining with some exceptional performances by Renner and Lively - and Affleck is the man. I am going to definitely get my hands on the DVD.

I glanced over what you wrote but I’m trying not to absorb it because now I want to see this other version.

reply

Okay.

I can see why you don't want to absorb it too much of it, because you want it to be a surprise. I don't blame you for that. Movies should be a surprise, as well. In the Extended version of The Town, the personalities of many of the characters are more developed, also. If you see the Extended Version of "The Town", here's hoping that you enjoy it.

There are a couple of movies where they added scenes omitted and combined stuff and it’s a much better movie. Godfather, for example, I and II are combined and it’s called The Godfather Saga. Also, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish)- it is called the Extended Version as well, and it has 2 hours more.

In The Town’s Extended version - how many minutes have been added? I just think it is funny because I would never have known there was this better version if you hadn’t commented on it. The Godfather and Girl with Dragon Tattoo have been on TV for years. So, I have to say thank you. Finally, something informative on this website.

So what does this mean? I googled. “There are three known versions to exist: the 125-minute theatrical cut; the 150-minute extended cut that follows closely to the novel and the 153-minute alternate cut that is the same as the extended version but uses the original novel's ending.” I’m assuming the one you are talking about is the third?

reply

You are correct in pointing out the fact that there are three known film versions of 'The Town', but the third version was originally called something like The Town: The Alternate Ending (though I'm not totally sure on that name), the original extended version of "The Town" added some other stuff but kept the original ending of the theatrical cut, and there is the original theatrical cut of "The Town", which has a lot of holes in it, because a lot is left out, and there's no real closure.

Now there's only the theatrical cut of 'THE TOWN". and the Extended Version of The Town, which has the Alternate Ending added onto it.

Thank you for your response--glad I was able to be of some help.

Thank you, letess.

One thing that drove me nuts about the Extended Cut was Claire asking Doug if his parents still lived in Charlestown in two different scenes! Was that an editing error or what?!

reply

I agree with you! Whether or not it was an editing error, or if Claire really did keep asking Doug if his parents still lived in Charlestown in two different scenes, really isn't clear to me, either, although it seems like it could've been an editing error.

Interesting... I just watched this for the first time, I saw the 150 minute cut. Some of the stuff you're talking about wasn't in it. Namely the Dominican guys returning after getting beat up and ultimately killing Doug, plus Krista getting left money.

There is three versions;
- The theatrical cut (125 minutes)
- The extended cut (150 minutes)
- The alternate cut (153 minutes)

reply

Hi there.

To be honest, I believe that the Alternate cut of "The Town" is a better, fuller, more developed movie, because it offers much more closure than either the original theatrical cut of "The Town", which has a lot of holes in it, or the Extended cut of "The Town", which also has some holes in it but not as many as the theatrical cut of this particular movie.

The only thing I didn't care for about the Alternate or Extended movie of "The Town" is the fact that the romance between Doug and Claire was somewhat overdeveloped, if one gets the drift.

I've watched the Extended Version many times and it's the better option than the theatrical version and does explain more

reply

Where can one find the extended version? DVD?

reply

The Blu Ray has the Extended Edition

reply

That's agreed, BKB. The Extended Version of "The Town", with the alternate Ending, has much more going for it, and there's much more closure, especially near or at the end, if one gets the drift.
