I'm not seeing the need to remake this classic

...the original was an underappreciated gem.

Oh, and as fine of an actor as John Lithgow is, he is no Fred Gwynne.

I don't really care, the original is good, the novel is better. Unless they change the story around completely I probably won't bother seeing it. There will be a lack of suspense because of how familiar the tale is now.

I would imagine that this story was underappreciated because of the subject matter.
Death makes people uncomfortable. Add the tragedy of losing a child. For most of us that is hard to take.
I do think the original was done well. I see no reason to do a remake. I can't think of anything new to add unless they want to add Jud's wife. I remember that he had one in the book.
I will most likely see this when it comes out. If I don't like it, I don't have to see it again. There is always the first one.

I think ill give it a shot Kingswood
I loved the original and would like a remake...sometimes remakes of awesome movies can be pretty great too (Evil Dead for instance)

And youre right...
I enjoy Lithgow a lot but replacing Gwynne in that role will be daunting

I am excited for this. However because I loved so many things about the original i am a little worried the remake won't live up to the expectations in my imagination. I don't know if other people do this but when i hear about upcoming movies especially a remake I always create scenarios and images of what they could do for scenes that are so perfect in my head. And often when I see the movie it does not live up. What will make this movie great is not just the images but the choice of music they use in pivotal scenes and the acting and reacting of actors to events in the film. Hopefully the little girl that plays ellie will be able to cry a lot because the story calls for it.

I am looking forward to this for two reasons. One, the original was good at the time of its release, but it is very dated. Two, it won't have the same over-whining, over-acting, nail screeching Ellie. Little shit. I was hoping SHE would wander in front of the truck.

Afterthought: Three, Denise Crosby is a pretty lousy actress.

Let's just say, there were three things I liked about the original (other than I enjoyed its creep factor): Pascow, Zelda and Dale Midriff - I mean Midkiff.

Agreed.

the original was really well done.. agree f*** the remake already!

The 1989 Pet Semetary is not original because it's an adaptation of the novel, just like this film. Dumb fuck.

reply

Geez, dumb fuck? Retards? You really are a child aren't you?

I can't understand why they are remaking a classic,oh i do,for the money of course.

I totally agree with your opening statement.
There is something to consider:
Watch the special features and commentary on the first movie DVD.
Steven King has comments there as well.
The movie has some roots in truth of incidents in his own life. His daughter had a cat who was killed by traffic on a busy roadway in front of their house. The neighbor across the street found the cat and broke the news to them.
Like the movie, the neighborhood actually had a "pet cemetery" down a path and back in a wooded area where people buried their pets, some of who were victims of the busy road. The PET cemetery was a nice peaceful place that looked a lot like the one in the movie. REMEMBER, the "PET SEMATARY" was a GOOD place. It was the Indian burial ground which was FAR back and not easily accessible that was evil. THIS place was made up for the movie.
Kings son wandered toward the main road as a young child and gave them quite a scare. It was the thought of losing a child that inspired the book.

King INSISTED that the movie be set in Maine. He chose a location and a house that closely matched his own. He worked very closely with Mary Lambert, the director, to get the right look and feel for the movie. He was very pleased with the result.

NOW, the question remains, just how faithful is THIS movie, to Kings vision?
It is set in Quebec for starters. Just how closely did the directors here work with King in making THIS adaptation.
These are things that might actually matter.
I DO look forward to seeing this but I dont see what it can improve on in a very well made original adaptation.
Time will tell.

Well, Time has told.
I am usually very critical of remakes. There are a few exceptions.
What I usually say is DONT do a remake unless you can bring something new or better to the table, or at least stay true to the original.
THIS movie brings MUCH new stuff to the table.
It takes a slightly different path but stays true to the aspects of the original. It elaborates on things that were in the original but it adds a lot to these subplots.
Lithgow was amazing as Judd. As much as I loved Fred Gwynn I think Lithgow brought a different emotion to the part and it worked well. It stays true to the character.
The girl who plays ellie was fantastic. Her part here demands a lot more and she delivers.
There were a few comments about the ending being rushed. I agree. I hate sometimes how things have to be edited for time and you lost important content. That may have been the case here. You can tell there was attention to detail in many areas. Since the ending is quite different, we dont have an original to compare it to. I dont mind seeing things tahe a different perspective rather than a carbon copy.
I would love to hear comments from Steven King about this. Even if it wasnt set in maine, the look was very good. I kind of liked the pet Sematary look as well as the creepy procession of the masked children taking a dog to be buried there.
A lot of jump scares but well placed and well carried out.
MUCH more graphic than the original but that is expected.
It doesnt detract from my appreciation of the original movie. I see it as a different perspective on the story. I liked that
