Maybe its because ive never been a comic book fan or seen Sin City but what is peoples problem with this movie, I mean its not that bad. The visuals are stunning, the acting is good, music is ok and I thought it was quite funny in places. I'm not saying its the greatest movie ever made but the way some people are talking you would swear they tried to make it bad. Just enjoy it, there are certainly worse ways to spend 90 minutes
Wake up Mr. Freeman... wake up and smell the ashes
Yeah I thought The Spirit was just awful. Found very little entertaining about it whatsoever. it was slow and plodding and incredibly cheesy in a bad way.
Blind bought the DVD one day and was really unimpressed so I gave it to a friend "out of kindness" one day. For the last 2 years we have essentually been trying to pawn it off on each other through various holidays and by sneaking it into each others homes while haning out. A few days ago I found it in my sock drawer, the bastard must have stuck it in there the last we went out drinking. It's basically a running joke between us now.
So I guess in that sense The Spirit was good for a gag between me and a buddy. Though neither of us have watched it more than once.
as a comic book fan, this movie appealed to me as it felt exactly like a video comic. The horrible acting and cheesy dialogue fit with a comic-booky feel, lets face it comics are cheesy.
However, as a film connoisseur; this movie really bothered me. It is, from a filmmaking aspect, an abomination. The only positive thing, in terms of film, is its unique cinematography.
I enjoyed the film because it made me feel like I was watching a comic, when most comic based films make me feel like I'm watching a movie. I'm surprised this film ever got a wide release because it could only have a very small target audience. It needed to be more of a film and less of a faithful comic style adaptation.
As a film it gets a 3/10 for its poor dialogue, horrible acting and terrible story.
If I evaluated it as watching a comic book on screen, it gets a 10/10 for its faithful style of adaptation.

See, that's where the Spirit really bothered me though (moreo than any of the filmmaking aspects you mentioned). I read a fair amount of comics and graphic novels and while there is sometimes cheese (especially with Amazing Spider-Man lol) a great number of modern comic books have toned that down over the years. Nowadays a lot of the series worth following are more clever than they are cheesy. The laughs that do occur while reading them also feel more genuine and well desered rather than just relying upon goofy one-liners or ridiculous happenings (just look at how the various X-Men series have evolved from their early days to now).
I dunno, I just feel comics have actually matured over the year while still managing to be fun wheras The Spirit just kinda felt like a step back for the public image of comics, at least that's how I felt about it. Visually it was sometimes great, that I'll admit, but the narrative, story and characters exhibited, in my opinion, some of the worst traits modern comics have to offer.
So in looking at The Spirit as a "comic book on screen I'd personally rate it at a 2/10. There are far better "comic book on screen" movies out there I'd direct friends toward before I even remotely considered mentioning this film at all.
EDIT: And I'm not entirely anti-cheese. I certainly still get a kick out of Tank Girl's antics and chuckle at Peter Parker's sometimes groan inducing zings. But I personally take it in moderation.
yeah i completely get what you are saying. It really feels like a comic out of the 40s to maybe 70s and definitely does not fit with the current trend in comics and graphic novels of toning down the cheesiness in favour of more realistic and natural dialogue. Definitely not at like the kind of dialogue you'd read in the new batmans, the walking dead or even scott pilgrim where at least the dialogue is topical, humourous, modern and yes still somewhat cheesy.
I guess the Spirit felt more like a throwback comic than just like watching a comic on screen, it definitely didn't have that Frank Miller flair over it like I had expected. My problem with this in terms of filmmaking also was that in addition to a poor screenplay, there was very little character development. If you are going to make a comic book based film, you need character development. Had the film been an hour longer and really taken me into the world of these characters, I might have been more forgiving of its cheesiness, piss poor script and terrible dialogue.
I gave this film a chance, being a fan of SLJackson, ScarJo, Jamie King and Eva. and I love Sin City.
But like others have said the storyline is confusing, the characters just talk alot (I mean Quentin Tarantino's characters talk but atleast his gives them substance and meaning, ya know you learn baout a character from what they say) but this film is like its not taking it self serious and cant even properly be a parody or spoof its own genre because it can't capture our interest. Or even care about the hero. In Sin City I cared about Hartigan saving Nancy. I cared about Marv finding who framed him for Goldie's murder. But in this film??? I'm hoping the actors got paid for wasting their time and being asociated with such ....take your pick. I just can't think how to describe it. Uninteresting. And I havent turned it off yet, I'm 37 minutes in and I'm trying to give it a chance and I'm just not interested in it.
But the only thing I like about this film was Arthur the Cat. If this was a superhero film about a cat fighting crime then it would be tolerable. It would be atleast interesting and funny. the budget for Spirit should of been used for a sequel for Sin City.
I think all of these people who wrote badly about the movie were expecting to see Sin City,, and when they didn't they were disappointed. are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite
