Maybe its because ive never been a comic book fan or seen Sin City but what is peoples problem with this movie, I mean its not that bad. The visuals are stunning, the acting is good, music is ok and I thought it was quite funny in places. I'm not saying its the greatest movie ever made but the way some people are talking you would swear they tried to make it bad. Just enjoy it, there are certainly worse ways to spend 90 minutes
Wake up Mr. Freeman... wake up and smell the ashes
You are correct guy that this is not a bad movie to watch. I have never read the comic book before but I enjoyed this movie. I thought it was entertaining and great to watch too!
I never read comic books and few years ago some pals told me that i really have to watch Sin City, i was very sceptic about that movie but i was really blown away by it, it still remains one of my favourite movies. After watching Sin City I was going into The Spirit with highest expectations, i really tried to like that movie, but in my opinion it was a comple disaster. Alright, the movie had good actors and it had really good visuals but it simply didn't draw my attention, i was really happy when the film ended.
I really never hated a film so much like that. I hope no one will ever give miller the chance to direct another film.
There may be worse movies, but I haven't seen one in a very long time. In fact, I can't recall ever finishing watching a film that bored me more than this one. If there are in fact worse ways to spend 90 minutes, they probably fall under the Geneva Convention.
I'm not a comic book fan either, I have seen Sin City...which kinda bored me as well. And actually there are many better ways to spend 90 minutes than watching this film. Yes..it looks great. But it is all style over content. That is what music videos are for, but to sit in a theater or even in the comfort in your living room for 90 minutes where beer and illegal substances are available to make the experience somewhat more palpable, still is not enough to enjoy this film. Watching Sam Jackson doing a parody of...well himself...was not entertaining at all. Eva Mendes erupting from the water wearing a tight fitting, cleavage revealing outfit is a good moment but when she follows it up with her next line..."Just shut and bleed"...made me groan. And the dialogue doesn't get much better than that. Alas, what "Comedy" was in the film was forced and not handled very well. Over all...a large waste of money, talented actors and time for all concerned.
I'm not claiming to be a big Spirit/Eisner fan, but the thing that really made the comics good was Will Eisner. The Spirit doesn't really have any superpowers, gadgets or gimmicks, or even an interesting costume.
So I was wondering how Frank Miller was going to make an Eisner-esque movie. He didn't. Instead, he came up with this crap about the Spirit skirting death and the Octopus being the cause for the Spirit. I was really starting to get upset as the movie went on.
However, once I decided that this wasn't going to be Eisner's Spirit, I found I could enjoy the movie on its own terms. It could have been better, but it wasn't that bad, at least on its own terms.
I enjoyed it, I'm read the comics and yeah I was disappointed in how the movie was but I still enjoyed it. You had Samuel L. Jackson as an intentionally over the top villain who was hilarious as hell, you had EXTREMELY hot eye candy like Eva, Paz, Scarlett, Stana, Sarah Paulson in here as well, that kept me okay for 90 minutes. There are MUCH worse movies out there, anyone here ever see Bug? Or Twilight? At least this was supposed to be INTENIONALLY bad. Those two have no excuse.
"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.
I really disliked this movie. I went with a friend who hated it as well. Nearly a year later when someone brought up The Spirit in conversation, my friend punched a wall so hard he broke his hand. His hatred for the film has become a running joke between us now. To argue over who is right about a movie being good is fruitless. We are all right about it! It's good to some of you, it's bad to some of you. My friend breaking his hand was awful for him. It was hilarious for us. Who is right?
Never mind what the director was attempting to translate on screen. If Frank Miller failed to create an engaging and entertaining movie then there is simply no excuse. It doesn't matter if the audience was familiar with the source material or not, what counted was what was up on that screen. The movie was simply badly paced and the actors/actresses were not on their game and since they have demonstrated that they are quite good actors in other films, then the fault must rest with the director Frank Miller. This WAS a bad movie!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You have horrible taste in movies if you thought this movie was actually good.
My response:
You didn't read my post carefully enough. I did not like this movie. As far as I'm concerned, Frank Miller should NEVER be given money to make another movie EVER again! This movie STUNK!

The movie is all exposition. All the characters do is talk about what the movie is about. No information is given visually, only really bad stylized fights. The characters don't have any growth within ninety minutes. The characters just stand around, talking, learning without reacting. Action happens only has punctuation. Moments are intended to be funny, but lack any real wit. As if we are supposed to laugh BECAUSE there is a joke, not at the actual joke.
