500 years ago that was the norm. I do not know the year in which the movie was set in. But 500 years ago, women/girl were married off at a young age,and the guys were usually older and establish so they can take care of them.

They clearly established she was 18, a legal adult almost everywhere in the world. Prob did so to avoid controversy too.
