Dear God I hate subtitles

As simple as that. I got this movie from a pawn shop and right now I'm watching it. The only movie I've ever watched with subtitles that I didn't mind was The Passion of the Christ. Simple fact is that I don't read very fast and I can never fallow subtitled movies. I'm happy that I'm watching Frontiere(s) on DVD that way I can pause every time the caption comes up.

Does any one else have this problem?

same here about having to pause a movie and read the sub titles slowly but i do not mind the subs. it gives me the chance to here another language even if not understanding it

Experience MAY be part of it. When I was in university I worked at a video rental store, and several people returned foreign movies as 'defective' because they weren't in English and they couldn't handle the subtitles. They didn't even realized they weren't in English when they rented them, so maybe they just were not accustomed to it.

But don't listen to the ignorant people who tell you that illiteracy or lack of education is automatically the problem for you. It's more likely that people absorb information differently.

I have the opposite problem. I have issues with auditory comprehension. Many English shows/movies I watch with subtitles, otherwise I can't absorb the information. For example when I first watched Deadwood I was extremely confused until I tried it with subtitles. I have started watching most complex dramas (Hannibal, Orphan Black, Downton Abbey) with subtitles.
It's a mixed bag. Sometimes it's a problem for me, even in classes or meetings I have trouble following what people are saying. Group settings are especially difficult.
On the other hand I can skim through a 600 page novel in a day. I love foreign movies so subtitles are a non-issue.

Do try a bigger screen; it may help. Dubbing sucks because the voice actors usually aren't very good. I hope you don't miss out of many brilliant films because of this :)

Did you, did you need to hear their death agonies to know your... your omnipotence?

So learn French.

@dark_orion

That's just your problem---I've been reading subtitles for years, so I'm used to them. Just read them like you would a book---you're get used to them after a while.
