So I haven't seen this movie yet, but when I look at the IMDb breakdown of the user ratings, I see males are giving this movie a very low rating compared to girls. Just an interesting observation.
As it stands, males give an average of 5.7, and females give 7.0. There may be an indication that the generation of the viewer affects their enjoyment - males aged 30-44 rate lowest, at an average of 5.1, while females aged under 18 rate highest at 7.5 on average.
Either a lot of men watched this film, or a lot of women didn't vote. 6.7 is still pretty high, it would be a lot lower if a lot of men voted low numbers based on preconceived biases. The question is, how many of those men that voted consist of males who enjoyed the movie? males who are either transexual or gay? males who are homophobic / anti-transexual and didn't bother to watch the film at all yet casted low votes?
Not to mention, there are women and men who based their ratings on their own beliefs either politically, religiously, culturally or just from another era developed by past and present societies with different role expectations for males and females.
I could clearly see this film being banned in countries such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran and Russia. Just as I typed this I thought I would google it, it appears Qatar, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan banned it for "moral depravity". Typical.
Reason is simple. Women buy into feminist *beep* and men don't and can see it for the hatred it is.
How would the movie be received if it were about a female to male transgender whose transition was instigated by her husband? Feminists would be all over it calling it "misogyny", claiming that her husband hated her and wanted to change her into a man.
It is very clear why males don't like this movie. They can see through the thinly veiled hatred aimed at them. Make a movie about cutting female genitals and watch what happens.
Wow there's so much stereotyping about men in this thread it makes me laugh. And it's mostly women doing the stereotyping. I liked the movie, and I consider myself as red-blooded a male as any other. Men aren't just concerned about their penises and how many women they can ****. They just want a decent loving woman to be with just as any women wants a good man to be with, that's all. They don't like to get into gender issues because most of them are comfortable with their sexuality. Unlike women, who are constantly trying to figure out who they are, men are pretty stable. That's why women love this stuff; they love problems with relationships and emotional instability.

And that's all I have to say about that.

men prefer more complex ambiguous movies, this entire movie is pathetically contrived ...I also found the theory of everything was appalling. so wooden, so passionless, the role of the wife was just pitiful. I love him he loves me....righto ? compare that movie with awakenings for example....stories revolving around severe disabilities that worsen over time and leave the person motionless....yet awakenings is a classic that will always make you laugh, cry , debate, think, love etc etc it did have the super natural talents of deniro , but even apart from him, robin wiliams showed huge heart plus a brilliant cast...the yanks do emotion and passion on the whole better than the brits back on point, women, young women are far more easily manipulated, all 3 billion of them all HAVE to be one direction fans due to female peer pressure...sadly the insane concept of politically correctness means all subtlety, complexity, all ambiguity and confused conflicting thoughts are lost under this tidal wave of PC that frankly destroys everything including free speech. all people of all walks of life deserve a decent life and all the opportunities, but the preachings of liberals in general is counter productive, as if they care more? this wasn't even a good story, it was a so contrived and oh so very cynical. theres been endless better films that had trans gender people as part of the story, here simply being a transgender people was the entire story. it was a real bore fest
I'm a male. In fact, I loved this movie. It touches a sensitive matter in a great way. For me, it's very underrated. I am 15, and my parents (50), also have loved it
I'm not upset at the content. That part is actually fascinating. What I couldn't stand was the off-tone over-acting by Vikander along with the ridiculous dialog.
Look, it was just bad and cloying. Not for a moment did I sense that the characters were grounded in any sort of reality. And really, for a film such as this, isn't that more important than the subject matter?
People want to champion the film because of the trans material, but, c'mon, the storytelling was horrible.
I could type out the restaurant scene with the doctor and y'all would cringe at how terrible it is. Basically, it's a Lifetime movie with good production value.
I dont champion the film because of the content. I thought it was a beautifully made movie about two people at crossroads. I certainly did not have a problem with the dialogue and story telling.
Really? I'll go right to the worst part of the film: The exchange and the acting of the doctor scene where they argue about the operation? You thought that was good? It was laugh-out-loud ridiculous.
The images and framing were immaculate and well-crafted; too much so, for my tastes. Fish mongering never looked so glamourous...and that's not a compliment.
Although, I did like the peep-show scene where everyone finally shut up and just let the visuals happen.
I didnt get that reaction at all. I really enjoyed it enough to see it twice in a weekend. You didnt like it. No biggy. I dont understand the fish mongering ref though.

Males on IMDB don't seem to like anything that isn't about car chases, bombs and super hero oriented crap. You cannot even judge a film's rating on this site properly because there are far more male users than female; therefore the ratings will always be slanted in the androcentric direction.
I think you'd be surprised by how many females like "super hero oriented crap." If you'd read the replies on this thread, you'll even see young males saying how much they liked this movie.
But whatever, if you're happier thinking you're in a minority, power to you.
