7?? Garbage

I'm glad I didn't waste 10 bucks at the theater on this piece of nonsense. Thor, God of Thunder? More like an hour of some lame-ass shmoo walking around in flannel trying to "learn what it's all about" while he woos his earthly love interest. Choke. Seriously, this is what passes muster for an acceptable superhero movie? No wonder Spider-Man is so popular. Glad Joss fixed him for the Avengers at least.

If I were doing the Mad Magazine version I would surely title it "Bhor".

I'm probably in the minority, but I dislike this film as well.

I rated it 5/10 and would've rated it less, but Tom Hiddleston is unquestionably great in this film, and because I'm a huge Jaimie Alexander fan, even though she is underused. But overall this film is glossy rubbish. It's very shiny, but it's not actually good. It's boring. Anthony Hopkins, who is usually incredible, sucks in it. And I never once sympathized with or rooted for Thor. Not once. Why would anyone rate a mostly boring film, with maybe 2 okay parts and an unlikable main character, above a 5?

reply

I thought Hopkins was great in this movie. I wasn't sure he could pull off Odin, but he certainly did.

As far as rating a boring movie more than a five, I reference The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

I was always certain he could pull it off, which is why I'm confused because he didn't for me.

Fair point.

To each their own. I didn't know how a short actor who had never really done anything like this before could have the "weight" to be a believable Odin. You could expect a Sean Connery or a really big guy to be Odin, but Hopkins owned that role IMO.

I think "garbage" is a bit excessive. The production values were pretty darn good. At the very least that earns the movie a few stars due to the eye candy factor. And the cast? Living legends like Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård and Asano Tadanobu starring alongside notables like Natalie Portman, Rene Russo and Colm Feore? Well, those casting choices alone got me in the door. What's more, the actors/actresses did a good job with what they had to work with.

But...

The final product was pretty weak though. The story is just kind of lame, particularly to those who have an interest in Norse mythology (in my experience anyway). Maybe the source material is better -- after all I found all AvP movies to be mediocre at best, but loved the Aliens Versus Predator books and waited with bated breath for each new issue to come out. Ultimately, I think 6 stars makes way more sense than 7. I could see people arguing for 5 stars, but I personally think that's a bit rough. However, anyone who thinks this is a 9 or 10 is either out of their mind or has seen far too few movies to form a educated/valid opinion. Bottom line, this is easily one of the weakest comic book movies of the ongoing comic book movie craze, imo.

(...For perspective, I very much enjoyed Iron Man and absolutely love the Bale/Nolan Batman movies -- especially The Dark Knight -- whereas I thought the original Spider-Man (2002) is probably the most overrated movie of the 21st century thus far -- comic book movie or otherwise.)
