If the Shoe Were on the Other Foot...

First off, I have not seen this movie. Therefore, I cannot say for sure that it is as blatantly racist as the trailer is, but I would bet so.

The topic I am commenting on is this:

Toward the middle of the trailer, we see the little boy hidden in the back seat of a van belonging to some other would-be immigrants while the white border patrol officer searches it. The thing that offended me so much was the way the border patrol was made out to be evil and maliciously hindering this little boys chances of seeing his long lost immigrant mother again. The ominous music and the tone of the overall scene was absolutely sick. The kid's mother is not supposed to be in our country, taking advantage of our benefits in the first place. But now they have the little boy crossing the border illegally and making the law enforcement out to be the enemy.

But, if whites were to produce a movie bashing Mexicans so clearly and utterly, it would be a monumental controversy. Can anyone else see that?

I realize that every single reply to this topic will be hateful and disagreeable to me, so I won't come back to this forum to argue with you people.

I just wanted to point this out.

To filld :-

Methinks you have been watching too much Little Britain and need to get back to school for some education.

I'm sorry you see racism in that scene, because first of all one of the 2 policeman is a latino herself. Second, the movie does not pretend to make the Immigration Police or Americans in general evil, it's just showing you the perspective of the illegal immigrants. Of course they look intimidating and mean from their perspective, theyre crushing their dream. The movie is not supposed to show you the reality (or whats right or wrong), it's showing a POINT OF VIEW. They boy surely hears that "ominus music" in his head when the policeman is searching in the car. So why not put the music to make you feel like the boy? Get it?

Also that crap about "theyre not supposed to be taking advantage of our benefits" is ridiculous. The woman is working two jobs, and is earning it's own money. In exchange some gringos have their house clean for some bucks. She may have broken the law by crossing, but I can't see how working for money is "taking advantage" of anyone.

First of all, not all of the U.S. are "whites", so the closet-racist might be someone else...

Anyhow, the majority of U.S. movies throughout history have depicted Mexicans as either poor, cholos (gangbangers), drug-traffickers or illegals, so that should answer your question...not to mention physical characteristics.

If the mother cared so much about her kid why didn't she go back to him? For all the millions of Mexicans that sneak into our country many millions more stay home so the excuse that she needs to be here to make money is lame, at best.

"god im so ashamed to be american god like everyones so stupid and like racist wtf
im an exception because i like geography and mexicans omg we're all just soo ignorant"

LMAO read your own sentences then call people ignorant. Learn to read and write before you try answering posts next time. Also, try using a dictionary so you can figure out what the word "racist" means before you using the term on people.

"The kid's mother is not supposed to be in our country, taking advantage of our benefits in the first place"

Jesus Christ...

yes, I'm sure she is taking away that housekeeping job you've been eyeballing...

And if you happen to be any of the following--Irish, German, Jewish, Italian, Chinese---I suggest you open up a history book and read up on how people in the 19th century were pissed that these 'savage peoples' were muddling up their streets with their unpure blood.

People will be reading your post in the future as an example of past ignorance, just as today we read with amazement excerpts from old editorials which complain about 'those damn Italians stealing our benefits'.
Thank you for becoming an historical nimrod for the humor of future generations.

The border police were not viewed as malicious--just as an inevitable obstacle. God forbid a movie create suspense with music to capture the situation.

I hope you come back as an immigrant.

i can't say that... see... on the film they say she send to her kid about 300 dollars... here on brazil that's almost a minimum wage... so you had a sub-job(hey! you are illegal... they hardly will pay you the same as a legal and will make you work harder, after all you are expendable) receive enough money to live and still had 300 dollars to send to your family for many people, that in their home country they barelly had a job, it's the american dream.

Wow your arrogance and stupidity are showing. The scene in which you refer to runs about three minutes long and if anything its simply showing that the border guard is inefficiant at his job. He looks neither evil nor good as he simply leans into the car with a flashlight and then pulls back out again. Don't throw your obviously propagated opinions around unless you've actually seen something that you deem racist you idiot. Your simply using something that frightens you as a podium to spread your hate.

If you seen the movie you would have find out, the two youngsters crossing the little boy (Carlitos) are US Citizens, that are looking to get some money to pay for they education. (so breaking the law here both sides)

Second: the Officer looking thru the van didn’t look mean of like a monster, thats the view from the boy and the two people trying to smuggle him in the States, and that’s what and how they do it, if you cross the border just to visit and then came back, if they search yur vehicle I assure you, you’ll be nervous too.(They confiscate the van because of unpaid traffic tickes, another law breaking rule)

Like someone point it out, every movie made by the American Industry, portrays Mexicans, Latinos and Mexican-American’s as low lives, drug dealers, poor and all kind of stereotypes, so pay attention.

And to star a topic and throw your points of view and not returning to face the responses that say a lot of you.

I really love when people start off with "First off, I haven't seen this movie..." yet feel free to comment on it! This person must also join book clubs after reading the back cover.
Even more shameful and disgusting? She is obviously aware of her ignorance and foolishness because she won't be back to the forum to argue with "you people."
Judging any aspect of a film from its trailer is like buying a used car because you like the color.
Now, now, Saramarie (sp.)....you are obviously not familiar with the saying "better to be silent and thought of as a fool than to speak up and remove ALL doubt...."
