One of the worst miscasts of all time

Its hard to see bigger screw ups with the casting than Tom Cruise as the title character. Cruise neither looks like nor physically resembles Reacher from the books nor is he that talented in playing multi-faced characters. Can anyone honestly think of a worst A-list casting choice for any movie within the last few years?

Agreed that TC is miscast and a nutter, one who makes these blockbusters to fund his nuttiness. One point. Isn't it interesting how short actors (Cruise is just under 5'8") vary in height in relationship to other actors in the film. When Cruise is next to Pike in some scenes, they're almost a match. When she gives him the info about the shooting range, he towers over her. Do these people think we aren't looking? Yes, apparently, that's just what they think. Same thing happens with Alan Ladd in various films, Shane for instance. That's why they so often cast him opposite Veronica Lake, who was under 5'. About the only interesting thing in this movie is when the guy gives Reacher his cap at the bus stop.

Why should anyone care about how tall he appears on camera? If you have a pre-occupation with it then it suggests some insecurity on your part.

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?

reply

Joe Manganiello(Alcide in True Blood) would have been perfect.

reply

I've never seen True Blood but I saw that guy in the new Arnold film Sabotage and you are right, he would be ideal as Reacher.

The right height and an absolute brick outhouse.

reply

He's supposed to look like a character in a book?

Wow you're dumb.

reply

Isn't the book's protagonist called Jack Reacher? Who was the main character of the film supposed to look like - Fred Smith? Tom Thumb? Tinkerbell?

I thought he did a good job.

It's pretty simple. Reacher is extremely tall and massive. To cast him accurately would be next to impossible, and to get a good action guy at that size would be a miracle.

The advantage of a Tom Cruise in the role (beyond the obvious things, such as he always delivers) is that it's far easier to find useful villains. In some of the books, he faces guys much bigger than he is just to provide some tension. 6-footers are more plentiful than 7-footers, and can look down on Cruise convincingly. Picture someone outside of pro wrestling looking down on Rob Gronkowski. He played the role exceptionally well- looking forward to the sequel.

Chris Hemsworth would fit as I recall Reacher is a dirty blonde for the books plus Chris is tall.

To the Op

No it isnt.
Arnold as Mr.Freeze. He's not suppose to be a huge guy. He's meant to be scrawny like Peter Parker.
Shaq as Steel in Steel
To big and he's not a decent actor. Granted the script sucked for a crap movie doesnt mean you can't do justice to the visual look of the character along with a professional talented actor as opposed to a athlete that acts as a second job.
Since no british actor has been cast as James Bond outside of Daniel Craig one could easily argue that one.

reply

Also Reacher has icy blue eyes with the so I see Chris Hemsworth as very close including the blonde hair and huge body.

Wow, which part of the world do you live in? I mean if you call 6'3" huge it must be a place with a lot of midgets! :D

- don't take me wrong, 6'3" is big, but in no way huge. It's only a measly 191 cm., which again is pretty common here in Scandinavia where I live. :)

reply

He's not calling 6'3" huge, he's calling Hemsworth's BODY huge. As in very muscular to the point of being intimidating.

Also, the AVERAGE height in most Scandinavian countries is about 180 cm. That means some are taller and some are smaller.

191 cm is NOT measly unless he's specifically grouped with guys who are much taller. My best friend in HS was 6'5". When he went to college, he saw a note about pick up baseball games on certain nights of the week. He said that it was the first time in his life he felt short, and none of the guys in the games were on the college team.

Okay I'll go with it: Average means average, and we have a lot of 6+ footer here in Scandinavia, and it is not considered as exceptional anymore. We're tall people. ;)

If you're calling Hemsworth HUGE, you should really look up huge in a dictionary. He's not HUGE he's big - quite a difference. The Rock is huge, The Hulk is huge, Arnold was huge, Sven-Ole Thorsen was huge, etc. etc...

And the measly part was ironically meant, but you didn't get it. ;)

Very true, except that as I pointed out, your average height is about 11 cm LESS than how tall Hemsworth is. Sorry to use facts on you.

The Rock is 6'4", the Hulk is fictional, Arnold is 6'2", Sven-Ole Thorsen is 6'5"

So, only the last guy is more than an inch taller than Hemsworth.

And you are delusional if you think Hemsworth is small. You can always cherry-pick the ones you want to use to compare to, but he's not small.

reply

Maybe you are confused. This isn't a book. This is a movie. If you don't like movies don't watch them. Cruise did an excellent job. No where in the movie is Jack Reacher a big person. He played the role perfectly.

I actually agree. I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan, more the opposite I would say, but I bought this movie on sale for $4 on DVD, almost a year ago, but have not had neither the time nor the desire to see it before now, and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great movie imo. :)

i bet i could name quite a few. i realize Tom LOOKS nothing like the character from the books. but hes a bad ass in this movie and does a bang up job, they made the movie really well. but i get your point and i would watch another jack reacher movie with a different actor, but honestly who else could they have casted, i mean you just complained any solution ideas?

reply

Cruise and the movie were fine - just weren't anything like the books. Going in, you know with Cruise playing the lead that it's not going to be the same Reacher from the books, so if you can get past that, and just go with it, it's not a bad action movie.

I had the same feeling when I first saw, The Firm. I love the book, and then saw the movie, and hated it - it changed a lot of the book, and I thought that Cruise over-did it a lot. But then, after a few years, I watched it again, and liked it, probably because I'd forgotten some of the book, or maybe didn't go into it the second time with the same expectations.
