shareI wouldn't call it the most overrated movie of all time (IMO TFA gets that honor). You can say Avatar made way more money than it should have based on its story quality but if you talk to most 'normal' people most agree the film was relatively bad outside the incredible visuals.
I have never met a single person on these boards, IMDB or real life that ever praised the film as great achievement in story telling or memorable character, or even have any kind of an impact in the pop culture.
So I would not say it is overrated. It is remembered about how it is deserved to be remembered and no one makes crazed overt defenses against the criticisms; unlike some films (TFA, Dark Knight Rises, etc)
yeah good point it really isnt overrated. at the time of release it may have been for a short while but not anymore
shareYeah, that is a good point; it was overrated a bit at first; people were really caught up and blown away by the visuals. I remember the "Avatar Depression" thing people experienced. But man that faded fast when people started to 'wake up' and realize they were tricked by the impressive visuals and that the story and characters were totally without soul.
It did not have nearly the lasting impact that something like Star Wars, LOTR, or even Matrix had on culture and filmmaking.
It might have been able to capture the same magic if it would have produced a trilogy within 6 to 8 years after the first came out. about 1 every 3 years or so. People would not have had as much time to think about the poor story telling and get bitter. With Avatar the gap was so big people aren't even bitter anymore; it has faded from pop culture completely. That is a testament to how a film cannot rely on visuals alone.
Avatar was a decidedly good film in my book. But not upper echelon.
The Force Awakens (TFA) is one of the very worst films I've ever seen. So for a true version of "overrated" look no further than someone who considers TFA anything above horrible.
Agreed. I still can't believe how much money it raked in.
shareI myself never cared for this movie. It's similar in story to movies like Fern Gully and Dances with Wolves. And because of that it doesn't feel original. And I expect more from James Cameron. Now he's decided to push for more Avatar movies. I am not going to see any of them.
shareI think Avatar gets too much hate. This is one of those films that was a little disappointing because it should've been extraordinary, and you were expecting that based on all the hype, but it turned out to be formula Hollywood. Dances With Aliens. It wasn't bad. It just didn't break much new ground, except for the visuals which were amazing - especially if you saw it in 3D.
I don't know why James Cameron was so enthusiastic about the sequels that he wanted to do not one but four, and somehow got the studio to take a huge chance by bankrolling them all up front. I'll definitely see the second one out of curiosity and cautious optimism. I don't understand people refusing to see it on principle. You're not signing a contract simply by giving it a chance. If I'm not impressed, I won't bother with the ones that follow.
I liked it.
IMO the Star Wars moves are the most overrated of all time.
IMDb has it at 7.8 with 1.25 million votes. Seems about right to me.
shareGreat visual effects. Cheesy story. It’s definitely up there.
