I hated watching this movie but I have to admit it feels good knowing that I have seen the worst of the worst and that no other movie will really bother me as much as this one has (at least for now...)
All right, then. There are also films with a more disturbing premise. Some that I see mentioned quite frequently are The 120 Days of Sodom and Men Behind the Sun (although it's almost like a Disney version of what really happened -- the true story of Unit 731 is more unsettling than any film could hope to be to me).
Someone mentioned Cannibal Holocaust. I think it qualifies, if only for the repulsive rape scenes.
They've actually made a movie out of The 120 Days of Sodom? For what I read from Wikipedia, espcially the fourth month's events make me wonder how it was ever published anywhere. The movie I mean, or how it was ever released in countries that originally banned it.
Something like that really didn't need to be turned into a movie format. I understand it may have a psychological study value for medical/criminal whatever purposes as a novel...but a movie? What does a movie adaptation of that story offer to a sane person? I mean, that story is like a gazillion times sicker than the Hostel franchise could ever hope to be...or anything I can possibly think of.
Even the Wikipedia article's summary makes me feel sick. Can't imagine how anyone could view a graphic movie of it...or why would anyone even want to. Hence, the question what can it possibly offer to a sane person that the novel wouldn't do the same...
120 Days won't ever be one of my favourite movies, but your questions only illustrate that you haven't bothered checking anything about the movie. I'm going to assume you understood the allegorical nature of the book, so a fundamental point would firstly be: check out the way the time period was deliberately changed in the movie and extrapolate from that what the makers were saying about the political system. If you grasp that maybe from there you can figure out why the film has merit despite being [like the book] an unpleasant diary of torture by a bunch of A-holes.
I agree about Irreversible- tough to watch that scene. I don't know what all the controversy is about Cannibal Holocaust. I saw it and didn't find it very disturbing at all, just campy. The only thing disturbing is that apparently, the animal killings were real.
I saw some clips of Philosophy of a Knife- they were pretty sick!
About every Saw movie, The Hills Have Eyes remake, Irreversible etc etc etc and of course i wont even start talking about Cannibal Holocaust or Serbian Film. I like horror movies but I do not like heavy gore and torture based nasty flicks. That is why I did not view Hostel for a long while because some of my friends described Hostel as the nastiest torture-centered flick ever. When I finally saw both Hostel movies, I saw that they were somewhat nasty, but nothing "THE" in this department...
EXACTLY LOL clearly these people have NOT seen movies like August undergrounds Mordum or Cannibal holocaust. This movie should be rated 12A in comparison.
The Human Centipede is actually really close to being the worst of the worst, the premise alone is unsettling.
Hostel Part II is the sh!ttiest as far as production values go, script, performances and pretty much everything a movie can do wrong. Considering this, Hostel Part II is indeed the worst of the worst,
Dear god. Calling this movie disturbing is one of the biggest jokes ever. This garbage is like Sponge Bob when compared to the truly gruesome films out there. Someone mentioned Cannibal Holocaust, SalĂł or Men behind the sun. You can also watch:
Martyrs Inside Audition In my skin Frontiere(s) Battle royale Visitor Q Haute tension Eden lake
These are only a handful of films, and they are as disturbing as they can possibly be. I understand you are american, so it´s not your fault. You people believe Will Ferrell and George Clooney are good actors.
Thanks for the suggestions I'm definitely going to check some of these out. I have seen Haute tension and although I thought it was a excellent movie it didn't really disturb me like hostel 2 did. I'm still not sure why this particular movie bothered me so much. I've talked to friends who really haven't watched that many gruesome films and they weren't as disturbed as I was and I've experienced much worse movies than they have. I guess people are just bothered by different things, for me that was hostel.
And did you really not find this movie disturbing at all? I mean I guess there are worse movies but it can't be that mild compared to them...
And for the record I can't stand Will Ferrell haha and I'm sure there are plenty of Americans that agree with me. I wouldn't really call George Clooney a terrible actor. He's definitely very overrated but he's not that bad.
I'd suggest Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible", it is the most brutal, most disturbing film I've seen so far. It was seriously hard to sit through, not so much because of the gore and raw realistic approach of two certain scenes (which definitely contribute), but because of the plot itself. It shows just how low and disgusting can humanity be, don't watch this film for the gore or the graphic scenes only, try to see it with an open mind and willing to think about the implications and the message.
Definitely, for pure disturbing imagery and content, Irreversible is at the top. I was totally blown away and speechless. Martyrs was the closest to Irreversible. Both movies are not significantly gory overall, but the tone and the spirit of the films is remarkably and intensely vicious and, well, nasty. Both good movies, but I definitely had to sit and drink a beer quietly after each of them.
I wouldn't really say 'Visitor Q' is disturbing - I mean it's completely insane and *beep* up, what with prolonged necrophilia scenes and a woman squirting milk from her breasts all over the kitchen, but it's down in a brilliantly humourous way.
The french film 'Man Bites Dog' is an incredibly disturbing film - again it has a lot of humour in, but done in a very subtle unnerving way, making you laugh as he kills old women and whole families (Seriously, suffocating a kid: not nice).
I've not actually seen this film though, but I can say the first Hostel was hilariously pathetic - it's like they went to a joke shop to get all the affects...that said the slapstick chainsaw-through-the-chest scene will always stay with me, bloody hilariously stupid bit, the rest was just kinda boring though >_>
Temaru ch3 p7 Blindness befall all who behold the dragon For its beauty is that of divine elegance
The opening scene in a little-known Charles Bronson movie called "The Evil That Men Do" (1984) is the single most disturbing thing I've ever seen on film. It's a torture scene that puts all others to shame. In fact, the scene was banned in England due to its brutality, and an edited version was released on VHS. I haven't seen this movie in over 20 years, and I still have nightmares about it. The rest of the movie is typical Bronson vigilante crap (and shoddily done, too). Practically everyone associated with the film is dead (including director J. Lee Thompson), and it's not available on DVD.
Have you seen that scene recently? That isn't even nearly disturbing enough. It wouldn't be banned now. Was only banned because of the time it was released. I've seen far worse things in recent films.
SalĂł is almost comical in it's gratuitous violence.
I don't think Hostel 2 is a very gruesome movie, I did rather enjoy the darkly humorous ending. Not the best horror offering out there, but I've sure as hell seen worse.
uh, are you sure it's not because your virgin mind couldnt take the raw material in the movie?? cause seriuously I could name hundred of movies much much worse then this one...

"Grotesque" was pretty good. That is to say pretty twisted. I've seen Cannibal Holocaust and many others and this was one of the harder films for me to watch.
might be because we could relate, it could have happened to any of us, the way they pick the tourists is pretty random..
it's scary to think that it could even exist in real life cause we know that money can buy everything... I personnally wouldnt choose random people, but people who really deserve it, but I dont think I could be sadistic enough to torture them like that...
At least there's some justice in the end :-)

I`m waiting for that movie for a long time. I will get a chance to see it soon. Serbian premiere will happen in my town in a few weeks at Cinema City festival.
