I personally like these adaptations of kids books:
Offhand I can think of several decent kid-book movies (or stand alone):
Willy Wonka (old version) Matilda Tuck Everlasting City of Ember Eragon Neverending Story
But somehow they never get good ratings - what, not enough sex? C'mon people! I think City of Ember was done very well, Tuck Everlasting didn't need to be a teen romance but it was okay. Inkhart was pretty good, not great but good - better than it's success indicates.
I don't understand it either. All those movies were good in my opinion. I loved Inkheart and would love to see more getting released, but I guess other people's lack of interest ruined for us who did like it, lol.
I think it has to do with what someone said earlier.
A lot of kids aren't allowed to see fantasy movies like this because they might be "too scary" at some points, but most teens and adults think that the rest of the movie besides those "scary parts" is childish and not worth their time.
There's not enough interest from the few who like movies like this to make it worth the studio's while to spend a couple million dollars to make a sequel for a movie that didn't do well in the box office, and that only has about 50% chance of making enough money to break even.
Here's some movies from this genre that I liked that I think should have been better recieved: The Seeker Race To Witch Mountain City of Ember Eragon Stardust Chronicles of Narnia (no one I know likes this series, though I think it's fantastic!) Bridge to Terabithia Tuck Everlasting Journey To The Centre of The Earth
what do you think?
Nothing like a nighttime stroll to give you ideas.
I agree with all the movies you put in this category. I don't know The Seeker - City of Ember was one my kids' favorite book series and movies.
Another that could be put in there is Indiana in the Cupboard and The Borrowers - and a bunch of others like the Never Ending Story etc.
Tuck Everlasting was much better as a book but okay as a movie - Hollywood tried to turn it into a teen romance but it wasn't. There's a book called Tom's Midnight Garden which reminded me of Tuck Everlasting.
I'm a little more cynical. I think kids are just intellectually lazy and want lots of flash if not blood. Dark Knight is much more their style, I liked it but I don't understand why people think it's the height of our culture.
Movies like this that are decent and the entire family can enjoy don't do well because more and more we train our children to enjoy movies involving lots of sex, killing, blood and guts. Innocence is long gone in entertainment today.
