ok we all know it is totally unexceptable and wrong for a white person to call a black person the "N" word. but doesn't anyone find it wrong for the head black cheerleader to keep calling brittney "white girl"? it is really starting to piss me off.
white peopel make alot more racist comments about black people (at least on television) thne lack peolpe make.
I mean black people are looked down on more often then white people. I mean it's like white is considered by many people the superior race, and black people often get looked down upon.
And that's exactly what’s wrong with the world. This is so hypocrite, either no one should call another person something based on their race or everyone should be able to do so.
Quite frankly I wouldn't mind anyone calling me "white boy" but then again I also find the whole "n word" business also quite small minded. I'm from the Netherlands and luckily we don't have "n words" that everyone is scared of. I really think that the big controversy around "n words" makes the problem only bigger. By banning a word like that you really give in to the problem. People should just be able to say the "n word", its not the word that’s the problem, its the fact that people that make such a big deal about this word actually are giving the word its power. That is why "lasiandra jaste's" comment is so wrong. You don't find white girl offensive since you assume there is nothing wrong with being white and therefore you basically imply that the "n word" is offensive since there IS something wrong with being black.
Now back to the movie, besides the fact that the story was terrible I found it exceptionally hard to watch the white girl trying to be black. I found this rather discriminating since it basically says "Now that you are wearing this horrible pink tracksuit with one leg pulled up we will accept you"
Yet if I (a Caucasian female) called an African America "Yo, Black Girl" I could be risking my ass getting kicked.
I see a lot more black people making fun of white people on tv, than the other way around. It's because whites now have to be 'politically correct' on tv, and not using words like the 'n' word (not that i'm advocating the use of it, personally I find it despicable that people still use it, and have never used it). Yet it's perfectly allright for African Americans or "black people" to call us Crackers. It's got the same derogatory affiliation, so it should be considered the same. But it's not.
It's all right for black men and women to call themselves the n word, as well as it's all right for them to call whites Crackers. But if a white person even ATTEMPTS to use the n word in public, they're risking their asses getting kicked, as well as becoming a social pariah. That's just wrong on so many different levels. That's discrimination...
I know all the reasoning that black comedians have given for their (and the black community as a whole's) use of the word, but I still find it morally reprehensible, to get offended when someone calls you a specific name (based on the color of your skin), and then go ahead and call them something similar, and then not feel anything bad.
yes i agree but two wrongs dont make a right. just because there are other shows on tv where comments are made about black people doesnt make it ok for the one white girl in school to be constantly called "white girl"in this movie. both cases are unexceptable
That's ridiculous. On TV more comments are made towards white people because it's not seen as wrong. There's hardly any racism towards black people on TV.
I think Brandon Boyd should marry me so I can cook his skinny ass some PIE!
Totally disagree that white people make a lot more recist comments about back people on TV. Seems like every time I turn on TV and watch a "black" oriented program, the white guy or girl is always the one who can't dance, jump, play basketball or makes a fool out of himself as he trys to rap. If you ask me, every ethnic group is racist. It's the screwed up world we live in.
white peopel make alot more racist comments about black people (at least on television) thne lack peolpe make.
I mean black people are looked down on more often then white people. I mean it's like white is considered by many people the superior race, and black people often get looked down upon.
Don't you agree?"
Ok, I TOTALLY DISAGREE with you!!!! You obviously don't pay attention to society.
Everyone calls white people racists, but let me tell you something....all races are racist...against races that are not thier own.
Just as an example....Look at Mr. Obama's preacher saying that he hates white people and it's all the white people's fault that we (the USA) are in the situations we are in and that he hates the USA. If he hates the country so much, then leave.
Sorry, you just hit a very sore spot with me. I try not to be racist, but sometimes you just can't help it. I will not say what race I am, for all any of you know I could be chinese, black, white, hispanic, indian....whatever, but...all I can tell you is that EVERYONE (I don't care who you are) is racist to some point! That is the way of our society, and unfortunately I do not see that changing anytime in the near future!
And I am going to correct that bogus statement now
I know some of the sweetest people in the world and they are not racist to anydamnbody nor am I.
If YOU are, that is your own flaw and feel free to keep that label to yourself. White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Native american WHATEVER! Regardless....if you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. If you piss me off, I will be a bitch to you...your race has nothing to do with it.
"Because I knew you, I have been changed...for good." " You flip flopping ass piece of bitch"
That's bullsh*t! If I went around saying "black girl" and "brown girl" and "hey asian", I'd get my behind massacred and hand-delivered to me.
Oh but us "white folk", we raped the Indian's Land and forced black persons to do hard labor, so WE get to be generalized NOW because of our skin color by being called "white girl" or "white boy" and have it be assumed we can't dance.
You are totally ignorant if being called by your skin color doesn't offend you. If you were Middle Eastern and someone called you turban head, are you telling me that's okay?
It's not okay to forget a person's name and call them based on whatever skin they were born with.
You think anything else, you are stupid as all Hell.
White people DO NOT make racists comments about black people on television ever! It is black comedians that are the most racist people on television! The way white people talk, dance etc has been fodder for black comedians since Eddie Murphy's Delirious, and it's considered 'humor'. However, white people are crucified in the press for any racial remark made against them. I think there is a terrible double standard in this subject. If I'm not allowed to point out or call someone black, or any other colorful word having to do with their race then I don't expect to be called cracker, *beep* whitey, etc. Fair is fair, and respect goes both ways!
personally i dont see the big deal! if someone called me white girl...why would you care?...i am white, and im a girl! haha i really dont know the big fuss with comments like that. To me they are just not offensive.
I don't think it's offensive and usually it's less offensive than using the N word would be. Even Britney called Winnie a 'white girl' and Winnie called Britney 'white trash' and they're both white! Does that make them racist against white people? Nope. Didn't think so.
well: 1)I agree with what RandyDishersWalletModel said, but then again, of course she wont call Cameille(sp?) "black girl" cuz if it were real life, she could get her ass beat, nasty style... 2)I find both offending, especially the "N" word, cuz Im black, white(and thai) but I shur as hell would not want 2 be called either and 3)funny, what BeatrixKiddoQT said, 2 wrongs dont make a right, but 3 rights make a left lol
ustjay allcay emay ugspay orway allsmay orldway can u figure it out???
it started to annoy me. i just wanted her to turn around and say "fine black girl" and see them all get offended. but then whats the difference with them saying "white girl" and her saying the same.
hypocrites.
fans to nicole: can you say thats hot!!? nicole: no, thats humiliating.
What gets me is that all the black/latino characters are racist to Britney and the other white characters and get away with it because it is hip hop culture. The consistent references to Britney's skin colour were very annoying. She didn't call them 'black girl' all the time did she.
Movies like this romote the idea that hip hop/black culture is great and being rich or white is bad.
"ok we all know it is totally unexceptable and wrong for a white person to call a black person the "N" word. but doesn't anyone find it wrong for the head black cheerleader to keep calling brittney "white girl"? it is really starting to piss me off."
i am not racist in the SLIGHTEST but i think the phrase "whitegirl" was really overused in the movie. any 'racist' remarks made about black people (ghetto remarks etcc) were really played up and made out to be totally wrong generalisations..which they are ofcourse..BUT "whitegirl" is just really wrong to use as well i think. and it was almost seen as acceptable as it was constantly repeated!! im sure the phrase "black girl" would never be used.. not that it should be..
i just think there was kind of a double standard =/ really annoyed me
the movie is taking place in the inner city [crenshaw] and in the inner city respect is everything. solange's character, camille, was someone who is the 'top dog' and doesn't take competition lightly, and brittany came into play as someone who could threaten her number 1 ranking. camille acted the way she did because she did not like the attention brittany was getting and the fact that they could both share the number 1 rank. that is why she called her 'white girl' because she didn't have any respect for her.
as the movie progresses though camille starts to gain respect for brittany but she doesn't want to show it because of her tough exterior. as for other people from creshaw calling brittany 'white girl', to them camille did not like her so they did not like her [for a short time] either.
so as for the fact of calling her 'white girl' being racist, its just a movie which means that the script was written that way. and in real life, much worse things are said than that.
Calling Britney "white girl" is the movie was suppose to offend her and intimidate her from trying out on the cheerleading squad. It was definately bad taste from the writers. It also would have been offensive if Brintey called Camille "black girl" but less offensive that using the N word.
it was meant to appear racist. the whole movie was based on how both white and black people are still racist towards one another and showing that BOTH do it rather than just the blacks being racist towards the whites or visa-versa.
I think this movie really hit on the subject and it shows that this type of prejudice is still going strong in the world.
I found this movie breath-taking and i know it can never replace the first installment but it is by far the best movie to hit on that sort of topic.
I didnt expect this movie to be all that great but im glad i was wrong and i took the chance to buy and watch this.
Its a freakin movie, geez SOME White people always like to go on about how minorities play the race card, what do you think you all are doing right now? Getting offended cuz your called a white girl, um what do you want to be called then so we wont offend you?
Well, I don't think either should be used, but the word *beep* is more charged somehow. I personally don't think you should call anyone anything that's related to their skin colour or whatever unless it's a joke, and probably not even then.
There is no comparison with calling someone “white girl/boy” and calling someone ni__er. That was a stupid point to even bring up. I mean I understand what are you are getting at, and I agree. But these are two different extremes. I think it is bad to label anyone as white(whatever) or black(whatever), as it is very condescending.
____________________________________ You disloyal, fool-a$$, b1tch-made punk!
because imagine if the roles were reversed and it was camille being called black girl everyone's allways fighting for equal rights and for everyone to be treated the same but that seems pointless if people that feel this way are the ones that are pointing out the issue of being a different race and it's not just in movies, i have been called a white *beep* before and other names to do with my race and i think it's rediculous because if i turned around and called them a black *beep* which i NEVER would because it's disgusting but if i did then i would be called a racist
i believe that everyone is equal, skin colour is just that, skin colour! althought i hate the double standards that go on in this world
iamradicool...please stop this if you call black person this and that it is racist, but not the other way. that is BS and a copout. it is racist on both ends just as much.
____________________________________ You disloyal, fool-a$$, b1tch-made punk!
FCA1975 maybe if you read my post properly then you would be able to understand what i am trying to say.
i really dont care if someone called me white girl, that is what i am. but if the role was reversed and i called a dark girl black girl i would be labelled a racist. it's such double standards in this movie because you would never hear someone say "oi black girl" so what make it ok to say white girl?
"White girl" is just stating the obvious, while being snide and condescending all at once.
There is no comparison between "White girl" and the "N" word. None whatsoever.
Furthermore, whites--amongst themselves--are alot more racist than blacks. White people belittle every racial group with different derogatory jokes when they think no one else is looking.
Black people rarely think about whites when white people aren't around.
I need Jesus like a starving lion needs a vegetarian platter
I was pretty disgusted, it's the same though in this day and age
White people have to be very careful what they say and do, Black people however just use it as an excuse.
We don't have the "White people awards" <-- "Racist" We don't have the right to say anything about the fact black people often are behind alot of crimes and murders, because thats actually racist.. To me it's just fact.
And in this film where she's reffered to as "white girl" in a provocative way to make her feel uncomfortable, i believe if there was a film that had some white kids calling some black girl "black girl" it actually would be banned
Ok, I think I got offended by your comment. I think that the whole "white girl" thing was supposed to open up the doors as to how that's just the way the world is. People are still hiding behind ignorance anyway and if it takes a made for DVD movie for them to see it, then so be it. So I'm going to basically say the same thing I said in another thread.
I wouldn't be offended if someone called me "Black girl" at an all white school. I mean, there was only 3 black girls in my grade in middle school and I was the only black girl on the track team in high school, so it was like "Hey, she's that black girl over there" or if they didn't know my name or whatever. In the movie, I'm pretty sure she only meant it as an insult in the beginning, but then it just kind of stuck like a nickname and became a joke.
I mean, imagine being the white girl in a predominantly black school and you insult someone without meaning to. Of course they're going to give you some sort of nickname that's going to make you stick out. She was WHITE. In a BLACK SCHOOL. So they called her "white girl." They could have called her "cracker" or some other racist name. So I, personally, don't find "white girl" to be racist at all. Now if it was a school where you had enough white kids, yeah, maybe it would have been considered an insult. It's not meant to be racist. So just get over it.
I, personally, have never heard ANYONE call a girl "white girl" as an insult. I HAVE heard other racist terms. Just like n!gga, I don't like hearing cr@cker. THOSE TWO are racist. ... But, gosh, if it makes you FEEL any better, I'll keep in mind that since it seems like a majority of people consider "white girl" to be racist, I'll keep my mouth shut.
Anyway, I don't see why it would ever pop into my head because that's not the first insult that comes to mind. If I wanted to insult you, it would HURT. And you wouldn't be questioning whether I insulted you or not.
And for a future not, I, personally, would appreciate it if generalizations like "White people have to be very careful what they say and do, Black people however just use it as an excuse" weren't used. I DO NOT use it as an excuse to get away with things and I find it insulting that you are, in a way, insinuating that everything that I have worked hard for in my life is because I'm using something as an excuse.
... And what the heck is the opposite of the "White People Awards." I don't know of any "Black People Awards." And if you're talking about the BET Awards, no one said that's just for black people, because white people like Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, and whoever else I can't think of at the moment on that station/award show all of the time. It's celebrating Hip Hop, R n' B, Rap, etc, which happens to be predominantly black while MTV tends to celebrate Pop, Rock and whatever is popular at the time, which--a lot of the time--happens to be predominantly white.
So PLEASE just think about/don't generalize things said so you won't end up indirectly insulting anyone.
It's all about context. If one of my black friends called me a white girl, or said something intending to be humorous, like, "white people can't dance" or something like that, i wouldn't be offended because they wouldn't be trying to be racist. A lot of my black friends call each other the N word, but they don't mean anything by it but humor.
The point is, the context in this movie toward Brittney from Camille was racist. Basically, it was okay for Camille to call Brittney "white girl" but if Brittney had called her the N word in retaliation, Camille and her friends would have gotten offended and started some other crap.
It was my understanding during the movie that when she said "NW," they thought that she WAS calling them the N word. And it was also my understanding that it was supposed to be humorous when she started taking out her earrings with an intention of starting a fight. What I got from the movie was that Camille was way too prideful to take things that she said back.
I can argue about this all day (Bring it on!! =D), but it would just be stupid. As far as I see it, it's just a made-for-DVD-supposed-to-be-crap-but-turned-out-okay teen movie that probably didn't mean TOO much harm and when she said "white girl," people were taking it way too seriously. And seriously enough that it unintentionally offended me and made me start an argument. And for that, I apologize if people feel as if I don't get the whole picture because I believe I do. I just, personally, don't see it as racist, but I made note in my last post that I see that other people do and won't offend people by using it.
Maybe they should have asked her what she meant instead of jumping to conclusions. They were both in the wrong. Brittney was acting too snobby (to the point where I watned tor wring her neck) but they were being complete bitches, and she was just trying to be friendly at first.
People are taking it too seriously because it is serious. Its a double standard. Camille could call her white girl, but when they thought she called them the N word, she was about to start a riot. It's not just a "made-for-DVD". It's a double standar that is existant in everyday life.
Okay, my "I can argue about this all day, but it would just be stupid" was an open invitation to end it. But since I'm in a bad mood and had to actually deal with SERIOUS racial *beep* here on campus today, I'm going to get on your ass about how stupid this topic is. There are more serious things in the world right now than the use of "white girl" in this movie. You want to fight about it, ask me for my AOL Instant Messenger address or my e-mail and we'll have an argument, hear each other out, whatever.
This topic, in the long run, is not something WORTH talking about anymore. If this situation happened, you know what you would say, I know what I would say. But this is not the most serious racial thing out there to worry about. You want to worry about racial double standards and get *beep* done, then go out and attempt to do something about it if you care so much instead of bitching about it on a stupid message board.
Yeah, Camille was going to start a riot about the N word. Hell, *I* would start a riot if I thought someone called me the N word and I didn't do anything to earn it, misunderstanding or not. http://www.abolishthenword.com/ THAT is why the N word is such a serious issue. If you want to stop double standards, get black people to stop saying the N word as well. Do whatever the crap you like. Just don't attack me for some stupid double standard that everyone is complaining about and not doing anything to get rid of.
And it is a made for DVD movie. That's like an open invitation to say whatever the hell they want to say on it because people only watch it when they're bored. It wasn't intentional. You have a problem with it, track down the writer, don't take it out on another race in racial sort of way.
Now in case you didn't catch it last time, I'm finished. Done. It's not worth my or anyone else's time, especially when I feel like anything opposite of what you're saying is going in one ear and out the other. You have a problem with what I said, contact me, whatever.
As long as you have a controversial subject, you can bet someone is going to argue it. Yes, it can be argued all day, and you can give an "inviatation to end it" but that doesn't mean it will.
And don't get me started on some "SERIOUS racial *beep*" because I can give you a mouthful. But since this racial incident that we're arguing was related to the movie, I'll stick to that.
Anything that causes a difference of opinions is worth talking about because it IS important. When people don't agree with something, drastic events usually follow.
Believe me, I don't just bitch about things on a stupid message board. you can bet your ass that if I complain about something, i do something about it when I can.
"Yeah, Camille was going to start a riot about the N word. Hell, *I* would start a riot if I thought someone called me the N word and I didn't do anything to earn it, misunderstanding or not."
For one thing, maybe she should have asked her what she said before jumping to conclusions.
Secondly, it is just a word. A WORD. It is the context of the word that makes it good or bad. The word doesn't mean anything when black people call each other the N word, does it? No, because they don't MEAN it in a negative context.
Yes, I am aware of what the word means, but it shouldn't be a serious issue. There are a lot of words that could be just as serious as the N word, but thankfully, it's not, because there's enough *beep* over the one condemned word as there is. It is a word. Repeat; it is just a word. And if people want the word abolished, maybe black people could stop using it so loosely. Apparently its not a serious issue to them when they call each other such a terrible word. Oh, but if someone calls them that word, oh God, let the axis stop spinning. Do you ever hear of someone getting shot for calling someone a cracker?
"Now in case you didn't catch it last time, I'm finished. Done."
Maybe the whole point of having Camille keep saying 'white girl' was that she was wrong in saying it.
Instead of calling her by her name 'Britney' she pre-judged her by the color of her skin, hence for calling her 'white girl'.
Was Camille wrong; hell yes! But I think that was the point, you can't judge people by the color of their skin and where they come from. You have to take them for their character.
And I don't think all black people use the race card. It's easy to say that is what black people do if you never had to walk in their shoes.
How would you like it if you lived in a country where you are the minority, and by most accounts you are treated unfairly because of something as silly as skin color?
I wasn't just talking to you dancequeen, I was responding to the whole board.
In America, black people only make up 13% of the population. Do the math there are at least 300 million people that live here.
And with all of the issues that go on here in America in 2007 involving race (Jena 6, nouses being hung at prestigious colleges, the amount of low income families, etc....) sometimes alot of people in this country judge people by their skin color.
I didn't say the whole country, but a good percentage does.
Population of the United States by Race and Hispanic/Latino Origin, Census July 1, 2005
Total Population 296,410,404 100.0%
Single race July 1, 2005 Percentage White 237,854,954 80.2 % Black or African American 37,909,341 12.8 % American Indian and Alaska Native 2,863,001 1.0 % Asian 12,687,472 4.3 % Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander 516,612 0.2 % Two or more races 4,579,024 1.5 % Some other race n.a.2 n.a. 15,359,073 5.5 % Hispanic or Latino 42,687,224 14.4 %
As you can see these are the percentages of people living in America from 2005, Whites lead with 80.2%, second is Hispanic with 14.4%, and third is Black with 12.8%.
So you can make your own judgements on how blacks are treated unfairly. Not by all whites, but there are a few who still think it's 1865 or 1963, and judge all people by there skin color. They are nasty and biased.
And not only blacks, but anyone of color are treated with unfair quality.
But getting back to the original poster it still was not fair that Camille was calling her a 'white girl' because like I said before they ALL were judging by skin color and neighborhood.
Good example: Jesse: You know she used to be a gang banger. (Laughing) Britney: What! That's not funny she could have killed me, I saw Boyz In The Hood. Jesse: And I saw Clueless. Music is the bridge that binds us all together.
