Highly underrated.

I am shocked to see that both critics and users do not care for this film. Yes it suffers the same faulty features of the first film, such as Tim Story's direction and illogical dialogue, but it is fairly entertaining. It contains nicely done action sequences and a nice subplot with the whole altering powers. Many will disagree, but I thought, at least compared to the first, it's a very good picture.

I agree that this movie is a bit underrated. I wouldn't say "highly" underrated though. It is an improvement over the first movie and a pretty good popcorn flick. If they had made a third I would have gone to see it.

reply

You're right...it's not a film that sits up there with The Dark Knight, Spider-man 2, and X2, but it has some good fun all boring bits aside.

The ongoing myth that "Spider-Man 2" is a great movie. Why sure!

Since when are Spider-Man's powers dependent upon Peter's confidence level? And what about that stoo-pid subplot with Spider-Man revealing his identity to the New Yorkers in the subway, like they're going to keep mum about it. Why sure!

This movie has its flaws, for sure. But right now it's 5.7 on IMDB. That's a little brutal. Even though it has problems that bug me, I can still find it entertaining.

I've always thought for the most part, they did a pretty good job depicting the team, especially Ben and Johnny. Reed and Sue needed tweaking. It's the villains they really, really, really messed up, namely Doom and Galactus.

I agree with and Ian suprised this doesn't have many more repl
ies! Reed Richards and Ben Grimm had great lines and are very versatile characters . I enjoyed this movie a lot and think the reboot will be great

I thought it was perfectly suitable for FF, and I have more FF comics than any other characters, most of the first 400 issues in one form or another. I would have projectile vomited if they'd made it a "dark" movie, I'm so sick of that and very few times were the FF ever dark. They were schmaltzy, grandiose, angst-ridden, but not dark. They were also pretty goofy often, which is fine with me. As it is, the film managed to weave a few key sixties storylines into an efficient package that I find fun, it leaves me wanting more but the Watchmen left me wanting much less. Sorry to dump on that if people like it, but I personally couldn't sit through Watchmen twice. Never mind Kick-ass. Ugh.

I agree Lightning. We have no shortage of "dark" superhero movies. These FF movies were a nice change of pace. They were by no means great movies, but decent enough summer flicks. I've collcted FF comics off and on since the 70's and didn't feel these movies were the travesty some people think they were. Sure they could have been better, but I enjoyed them enough.

So LightningLad, did you projectile vomit over the new FF4 film that just came out? 

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

Loved it. Fantastic 4 were perfectly cast and suffered from occasional bad dialogue. Doom was badly cast and played way too big a part in the film. Like the second Spidey film which was pure perfection they should have concentrated entirely on a new enemy/problem

reply

Some of the dialogue was pretty bad, especially in the first one... but I loved both films; I thought they were fun!

My only real complaint as a comic book fan is the characterisation of Doom and, to a lesser extent, casting of Alba... everything else was perfect..

I'll chuck in my tuppence worth and say that I enjoyed these films a lot, especially the second one.

In recent years, the superhero fare coming out of Hollywood has been uneven, but the Fantastic Four was a shot in the arm for the genre.

Less angst and more sympathetic characters than Spidey – who I found at times irritatingly glum or petulant – and a nice counterpoint to the general dark tone of the X-Men, never mind the meaty, grim business going down in Gotham (let's not mention the sheer tedium in Metropolis).

Lots of good-to-great Superhero films have come along (I particularly like both Iron Man flicks), but there was definitely room for these two, in fact for a trilogy. Sadly, it seems not to be.

Above all, without being out and out comedy, these were easily the funniest of the bunch. Sue trapping Reed in a forcefield sandwich ("Please continue") or swapping for her brother's fiery powers ("I'm on fire! I'm on fire!" "Sue! You're on fire!" "YOU THINK?!") had me creased up.

@unlovedseason: the movie was PG, that's why you enjoyed it so much less drama & more family/campy.

reply

Yeah, true. Sometimes you're in the mood for that. And other times, you feel more like…
"A symbol of what?"
"That we don't have to be afraid of you."
"Oh, but you do, Brian. You really do... "

Bring on The Dark Knight Rises!

LOL, loved those scenes haha xD

I'll say one thing, it was much much much better than the first movie. But that's not saying much and I don't think that makes it underrated.

reply

@gustav fiers: and i gave the reason for that, it was PG & campy/family entertainment.

reply

When I saw it at the cinema I thought it was great, not really watched it much since but was miles better IMO than Spiderman 3.

reply

It's not great by any means, but it's certainly better than the 5.7 imdb users give, or the 4.7 avg critics gave it. I'd say it deserves a solid 7/10.

There's not many live action PG movies being made these days that adults can find entertaining, but this is definitely one of them. The surfer scenes were very cool, and it was almost like a natural disaster movie for the first half... some good stuff. Better than the score indicates as I said...

This movie is embarrassingly stupid, but a little less embarrassingly stupid then the first one - so I guess you could call it underrated?

reply

I am embarrassed to admit I watched this entire flick yesterday. Even as a network TV series, this would have been awful. That people paid actually money to see it is mind boggling! It was bland and ridiculous.
