Where does this film rank on your all-time list?

Just curious. I'm sure for many people it doesn't even register, but on my "list" I'd say this is easily a top 10, perhaps even a top five.

reply

It was a top 5. I waited over 3 years to watch it again recently and I think now it's undeniably the best film I've ever seen. Every frame moves me almost to tears. It's the most beautiful piece of art I've ever seen.

reply

Succinctly stated, but accurate. It is emotional, I think, if you allow yourself to be immersed in it.

Top 10 for sure. Probably top 5.

What a f!cking pussy.

I found this film devastating. It was much too personal for me to watch, and for that reason I know I rate it much higher than most people who would not relate to the story as intimately as I did. For three hours I cried quietly in the theater and didn't even care. It's not really the kind of experience one desires to have again, but this was clearly a very fine movie, even if a bit overdone and pompous for most viewers.

Exactly my words!

The Tree of Life will probably always be my personal no. 1. I can't imagine anyone making a film that surpasses this one.

"the most beautiful piece of art I've ever seen"

I believe there is a fantastic Hobbit trilogy buried underneath the not-so-good fan edits.

reply

I found it beautiful, but pompous, in overall it left me cold, but I can give it some credits. I would put it in my top 2000, it didn't reach me as other movies. The only movie I really like from Mallick is The Thin Red Line.

reply

Same here. The Thin Red Line for me.

This film was indeed pompous. The narration at the beginning of the film was particularly annoying, like a bad perfume commercial.

Good performances by those involved. I'll give it props for that.

#12 of all time, 4th favourite American movie, favourite movie of the 10's, 2nd favourite of the new century, etc.

2.

reply

I've only made a top 20 and it's not on there, but I'm pretty sure it would be in my top 30

reply

It's my #1. Not most watched but greatest movie ever. Rushmore was my favorite of all time...watched and watched and will still watch more than Tree of Life. However, Tree of Life was so impactful on my life. It took both my wife and I 20 minutes after the credits to get ourselves together enough to leave (OK, maybe 5 min after...I was done midway through credits). Watched it numerous times after and so powerful and moving....great movie for a great conversation too!

Nowhere near my top lists. It has a 6.7 IMDB rating which means it really isn't that good. People need to quit overrating it, if anything.

Wow. You really judge the quality of a film by its IMDB rating?

"People need to quit overrating it, if anything."
You just pointed out it has a 6.7 IMDB rating. I don't know if I would describe that as "overrated", quite the opposite in fact. I think it's safe to say that the people who adore this film are in the minority. It makes zero sense to say it is overrated.
Also, why should people quit "overrating" it? Because you think it's bad? Does everybody have to abide by your judgement when it comes to cinema? Wow, it's really terrible that other people have a different opinion than you do, they really should quit doing that.

I watch it about once a year, keeps getting better and more entertaining as each time I notice something new or put some quote or something in a new perspective, top 3 stuff for me

1) Go figure what an average value is.
Is not 120000 ppl giving it a 6.7

53000 ppl gave it an 8 and higher.
26000 ppl gave it a 4 or less.

2) Do you always meet the average? Then you are very average.
