Taking Westworld out of Westworld was a mistake

Thats when the show went downhill, its called Westworld yet the actual Westworld becomes an afterthought and all of season 3 takes place in a futuristic city something we've seen countless times. Thats when it got boring, i wanna see old west shit, i wanna see shootouts with gangs and horse chases and people getting hanged and Indians scalping people.

Taking us out of the unique entertaining setting of the west and into a standard boring futuristic city, a setting we've seen hundreds of times in future movies, self driving cars and all was the mistake. And Aaron Paul's character was so boring and all the car chases and gunfights in the city got old real fast.

The setting of the old west set the show apart, cause we haven't really had a big budget old west show aside from Deadwood in like 2004, which wasn't really a big budget show.

If you planned on taking the show out of Westworld why call the entire show Westworld? should have just called it Devos, cause Westworld is just an afterthought in season 3.

The Man In Black was by far the best character in the show, then you take him out of Westworld and all of season 3 has him has some beaten down old man losing his mind and locked up and barely in the show. I wanna see him dressed in black with his hat and gun maliciously killing people in the old west, i don't care to see William in the real world doing jack shit but sitting around drinking and talking.

Rewatch season 1.

The robots evolve

My point still stands, the show went downhill as soon as they took the show out of the old west. I'm aware of why the show was taken out of the old west in the story.

reply

in your opinion

reply

Show went downhill after they splattered Anthony Hopkins brains all over the floor.

reply

Anthony Hopkins is still alive.

reply

lol

Yeah season 3 felt like a very bad video game extension. Previously sympathetic characters become invulnerable mary sue terminators while we guess who is and who isn't Dolores, no thanks. Can't believe it got another season.

reply

Yeah and now William the best character in the show is dead and we're left with a cheap imitation robot being controlled going into season 4. Its such bullshit, i was actually looking forward to a William hellbent on killing robots and saving the world, now thats out the window.

robots are better than humans

Maybe you could expand your definition of "west" to include places that aren't just the Wild West. I haven't watched this season, but I did see some of season 1 and I got bored. Maybe they want to mix it up this season to draw in more viewers?

reply

Maybe they should have called it Futureworld.

reply

Hey even though the movie Futureworld was a pretty crappy sequel to Westworld, they don't need to trash that movie as well.

reply

That’s fair.

reply

You said it!!!

IMHO they didn't think that far ahead. I guess they really planned for 1 season and when it had such success they scrambled to make extra without a good background story.

Just like GoT when the source dried out it went down the drains, same here ...

It looks like current writers are SHIT!!! :D

what made season 1 amazing were the characters and the mystery behind some of them. All that went away in S02.

reply

The show has been planned and outlined as a 5-season series from its inception. The current writers are the original writers.

reply

Weird ...

then it's the same as with got ... as soon as they run out of the original material they kinda lost it.

reply

It's completely different. For one thing, GoT had GRRM with them on the scripts (Crichton is long dead), who promised he would get the last book done "any year now", but never did (still hasn't).

This show is based off of a single completed book and deviated from it (and the 70s film) right from the beginning. It was clear in the first season they weren't just following the source material.

And as R_Kane said above, the show was planned as a 5 year story from its inception, which means they could very well have had a 5-year story arc already written up (which is not unusual with series pitches these days), in at least a skeleton form.

AND more to the point (of this thread title), they probably knew from the get-go that the story wasn't going to stay in the park. I for one am glad it didn't.

reply

It;s not so much about not staying in the park but more like ... the thematic become too diverse (and I don't mean skin color).
We have a literal god (Hale/Dolores) bored to death and super annoyed with the pitiful humans - lol. I wonder how OUR god feels, hahaha

I agree, Season 1 was the best. But it could also be a case of it just being that Season 1 was the best. Had they developed the same premise with a different setting, it still might have been as good to begin with, with going bad when the story took it elsewhere.
