An actor who prides himself on being a proper actor...what film does he choose to do this? A film based on a video game, set in Persia...to do an English accent.
WTF?
Yeah I'm not sure wtf he was thinking either. Perhaps he thought he could pull a 'Jack Sparrow' by creating an iconic character and thus shoot to
superstardum:
Depp takes a chance on an adaptation of a campy amusement park ride, Gyllenhaal takes a chance on an adaptation of a campy video game. Depp's character is a scruffy, swashbuckling hero, Gyllenhaal's character is a scruffy, swashbuckling hero. Depp is an American using an English accent, Gyllenhaal is an American using an English accent. Depp created an iconic movie character that's now a household name, Gyllenhaal... well, that's where they differ.
*Strangely, though, the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton could be likened to that of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz from The Mummy (the character's chemistry, that is, not necessarily the actors' themselves). In which case Gyllenhaal's regular accent might've proved more successful anyway, regardless of the game's fanbase.
