Other Figures in history that ought to get the 'John Adams Treatment'

There are so many, but I truly believe there should be a miniseries, such as in the style of John Adams, made about Boss Tweed.

Boss Tweed encompassed a dramatic portion of American History during the civil war and reconstruction era. Also, Tweed and his connection with Tammany Hall is a major part of history, detailing political corruption at its worst.

Also the supporting list of characters would detail a large portion of history that is commonly forgotten by most. These would be people like:

Samuel Tilden
Thomas Nast
Oakley Hall
Peter Sweeney
Richard Connolly
Horatio Seymour
George Jones
Jimmy O'Brien

Who else do you think deserves the "John Adams Treatment" and why? I am curious to see what others think.

A miniseries based on Edmund Morris's Theodore Rex might be great.

I would absolutely love to see a film or series about Daniel Sickles, though.

"PLEASE DON'T DATE ME! I PROMISE I'LL WORK HARDER!"

reply

Have you read 'Sickles the Incredible' by W.A. Swanberg and 'Sickles at Gettysburg: The Controversial Civil War General Who Committed Murder, Abandoned Little Round Top, and Declared Himself the Hero of Gettysburg' by James A. Hessler?

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.

reply

The only full-length book I've read on Sickles's was Thomas Keneally's American Scoundrel. I'll definitely keep an eye out for those though.

"I will treat these paltry interruptions with the attention they deserve."

Who was the guy that lead a militia against post civil war confederate terrorists/militias that would form early klan? They should definitely do something about him?I forgot his name.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

Colonel George Washington Kirk?

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.

reply

General John Glover. He appeared in THE CROSSING but he could have an entire series based upon him alone.

Lincoln would lend itself to an excellent mini-series

I have been waiting on that movie since they announced it. It was at first, supposed to come out in 09.

Last I heard Daniel Day-Lewis was in line for Lincoln.

I thoroughly enjoyed the novel by Gore Vidal.

Fidel Castro

Fisher Ames. Peter Francisco would also be a fascinating study but I don't think there's enough source material for an entire mini-series.

Calvin Coolidge has always interested me. I can't seem to find a really good biography on Silent Cal and I don't see why there isn't a proper treatment for him as there are for other Presidents. He's very interesting from his stand on the Boston police strikes, the Immigration Act, and Indian Citizenship Act. He had a great sense of humor and great respect for the American people.

Francis Marion
William Halsey
John Paul Jones

Robert Kennedy. History revolved around these people, it seemed like.

Napoleon. Why not?

Charles Dickens. They could then go into the horrible living and working conditions that everyone had to put up with, his inspirations for his work.

Sigmund Freud. A film could also go into all of the psychologists/philosophers in the era.

Albert Einstein. No particular reason.

Mark Felt. He comes out as Deep Throat, is famous for 5 minutes, then dies. Everyone goes "oh." Like it's a let-down, anticlimactic, and they never wanted to know the identity at all.

reply

Napoleon has been the subject of any number of films, and a miniseries with Christian Clavier most recently. He's a pretty well-worn subject by now.

As for Felt, many people were more interested in the fact of their being a mystery than who Deep Throat was. It's no fun if you know the answer.

Boss Tweed would be great.

Some other figures from the darker side of American politics would also be good -

Major General William Joseph "Wild Bill" Donovan
Allen Dulles
Richard Helms
James Jesus Angleton
E. Howard Hunt
G. Gordon Liddy

- maybe they could all be in the same film, a history of the CIA, kind of like "THE GOOD SHEPERD," but a bit harder hitting.

Mayor Daley of Chicago would be interesting.

For older figures, maybe the abolitionist John Brown, or Frederick Douglass, since they've all been white guys so far. Man, there are tons of people that awesome films could be made about, but first they seem determined to make a mega-budget cinematic abomination about every single crappy comic book character in history!

Oh. James K. Polk as well.

If we are sticking to strictly American figures, I would love to see one about President Andrew Johnson, and Reconstruction in the south, and his near impeachment.
