our president is black.. isn't that a bit more important (and more deserving of your focus) than what movie roles Eddie Murphy is choosing? i understand your position, i just don't think most white people look too much into it.

I don't see the problem when the movie was Eddie's idea in the first place, and when the original script had the rest of the characters as black men as well

In today's politically correct America, Black actors rarely play the role of convicts, thugs, and villains. Nowadays you see a lot more Black actors playing scientists, doctors, and lawyers even though in reality there are more Black men in prison than there are Black men who are scientists, lawyers, and doctors.

Also the vast majority of Black tv shows portray 2 parent household families, even though in reality most Blacks did not grow up in a 2 parent household.

You rarely see Black tv shows in Hollywood that are about a 1 parent household. The vast majority of Black portrayals in Hollywood are positive.

I actually lost count of the racial stereotypes you crammed into that relatively simple post.

In today's politically correct America, black actors barely get to act in movies, I cannot remember the last time I saw a black actor on the big screen that isn't playing the role of the token ethnic character, so I'm not exactly sure how many movies you are talking about here. This year (2011) I can count just 3 movies with significant black cast, one includes a movie where black women were depicted as ebonics-speaking illiterate and homely house helps (The help) to the beautiful young white women. So the very few times we get to be in movies and tv shows you expect us to play the role of the bumbling ebonics-speaking illiterate idiot drug-dealing GANGSTA thug.

Oh and also, in reality there are indeed black doctors, scientists and lawyers, but you seem to be very interested in the black prisoners, I wonder why. Oh and also, since we barely even get to be in your movies why the hell do you want us to play the evil villains who end up making your people look like angels.

In reality, African-Americans represent a very tiny percentage of black people in the world, divorce rate in the U.S.A and Europe is about 80% higher than in Africa with a significant black population, so yeah, in general black people tend to stay married more than white people.

In Hollywood, YOU RARELY SEE A BLACK TV SHOW. Get it? can you name the black tv shows you are talking about that isn't one of Tyler Perry's minstrel show? Also, name those movies with significant black casts which you seem to be talking about, because to be honest, I really can't remember watching ANY mainstream "black movie" lately.

The vast majority of Black portrayals in Hollywood are positive.

The vast MAJORITY? hahahahaha, as in which movies and tv shows again? can you name those black tv shows or those movies? How often do you even get to see black people on tv these days? You sound like a complete out of touch racist idiot with zero clue of anything. Black people are still fighting to even get to be on tv yet you make it sound like there are too much of us already, stupid racist idiot, I hope you choke in your sleep.

40% of the male prison population in the U.S is made up of Black males.

http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/olos/prison_facts.pdf

But I doubt very much that 40% of all doctors, lawyers, and scientists in the U.S are Black males.

So yes Black males who are in prison outnumber Black males who are scientists, doctors, and lawyers.

Notice how you totally skipped the important issues but you chose to talk about what you want to talk about. Just like you racist white people always do, you run and hide when people decide to talk about race and say you hate people playing the race card, but you never hesitate to whip out the race card when you want to point out the percentage of black people in prison.

White racists like talking about black people in prisons, but hate to talk about other things like INSTITUTIONAL RACISM, and how white people control the justice system, the overwhelming majority of policemen are WHITE, black people get harsher sentences. Idiots like you sit on your white privilege then look down on black people, maybe we should talk about the privileges your people still enjoy in the U.S. Why do we cover the stories of missing white women more than ethnic women? how come nearly all newscasters and tv hosts white? Why are 95% of actors/actresses white? 98% of movies are made for white audiences, even ones with black casts. How come all movies must have white heroes except it is Will Smith? Every single movie is checked by the movie studios to make sure they don't offend white people, heck white actresses must never be paired with ethnic actors as love interests, but white actors get to bang women of all ethnicities, etc, etc.

There is political correctness in Hollywood - and it enforced mostly to protect white people. Heck you cannot make a movie showing white people as evil or racists, except the heroes of the same movie are white, even though we all know there is a significant number of racists in your community. You must be an idiot to think Hollywood is supporting or doing any ethnic group any favors, they even whitewash ethnic stories, replacing the ethnic characters with white actors/actresses to sell movie tickets.

Yeah the vast majority. When was the last time Hollywood cast a Black person to play a villain ? It was 5 years ago in "The Last King Of Scotland".

And what do you mean "how often do you even get to see Black people on tv these days", the vast majority of sitcoms and drama series today do not have 100% White casts. There is like only 2 or 3 sitcoms/drama series at the most these days that do not have single Black person as part of the regular cast.

"Community", "The Office", "Haven", "30 Rock" "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Happy Endings", "Saturday Night Live", "New Girl", "CSI: Miami", "NCIS: Los Angeles" "Being Human", "Warehouse 13", "Desperate Housewives", "House", "Mike And Molly", "Parks And Recreation", "CSI: New York", "True Blood", "The Vampire Diaries", etc all have Blacks as part of their regular cast.

Not bad for a group that makes up only 13% of the U.S population. Blacks are actually overrepresented in television compared to their share of the general population.

Asians have more of a legit claim of underrepresentation in television.

reply

Nice try but I refuse to accept any movie or tv shows with just ONE or TWO black people, that is nothing but racist TOKENISM. Do you watch movies with just one white person, how the hell can you count shows with token black characters as being representative of anything? and you want that token character to either be a prisoner, drug-dealer, criminal, or from a single parent home because that is apparently how black people should be potrayed.

If a certain people barely get to be in movies and tv shows except when they play the TOKEN minority character I bet they will hate to be depicted as evil. You have mentioned shows where black actors get to be the token minority so I cannot take you seriously. The only "black" shows on tv are the ones made by Tyler Perry, why the hell would you want the token black character in a show and movie to be the evil guy, like making the only Muslim the terrorist or the only Asian the kungfu fighter - while the white actors get to be all over the place.

The reason black people often play the good guy is because they hardly get to be on tv and in movies, and whenever they play the villain racist idiots like you run with the stereotype.

Not bad for a group that makes up only 13% of the U.S population. Blacks are actually overrepresented in television compared to their share of the general population.

That is exactly the thinking of people who love and always wish to keep black people in check; make sure they are never seen or get their own movies and have their stories told - because they are only 13% of the population. You expect every movie and tv show (even the ones made by black people) to have 1 token black character. You don't think black people should have their own stories and movies and show OUR communities, you just want us to know our place because we are only 13% and should shut the hell up.

Look, get lost, I couldn't give a sh** about the movies your people make, this is why we have BET and Tyler Perry is becoming a billionaire, there are black directors, actors, and entertainers who want to tell black stories, there is a black audience who want to watch black stories, do what you want with your movies, however do not jump into what black people do and tell us how many of us should be in our own movies - or tell us how we should be represented in any movie.

reply

Stop bytching, it is fact that Blacks are overrepresented in Hollywood. The only minority group that are underrepresented in Hollywood are Asians. Most television shows and movies do not have a single Asian cast member, probably because all of the Blacks are taking the token roles from the Asians.

reply

So you actually believe TOKEN ROLES are a good thing, lol, kinda slaying black people are taking all the slave jobs, and other groups should be allowed to be slaves. Why can't you say you wish Asians would have there own movies where they dominate, why must any group be subservient to white people. You are a racist and you show yourself to be.

reply

If Whites were only 13% of the the U.S population, I bet few movies and television shows in Hollywood would have a predominantly or all White cast. Whites would mostly be cast in token roles like what you see in Tyler Perry movies now.

The Amos 'n Andy TV show of the early 1950's showed black people in Harlem as shopkeepers, police, druggists, accountants, lawyers, etc. Yet it was deemed racist!? Why?? You can't have it both ways!! Stepinfetchit opened the door for black actors like Mantan Moreland of the Charlie Chan movies. Mr. Moreland got second billing, right behind the actor that played Charlie Chan!! He opened the door for the next generation of black actors (Sidney Poitier et al). As Hattie McDaniel famously said "I'd rather play a maid for $70.00 a day, than be one for $7.00 a day"!!

You calling someone racist is the epitome of the old adage about pots and kettles.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

This is a movie, not Sesame Street. It's supposed to tell a compelling story. And, part of how it does so is by crouching it in reality. Whether you like it or not, the reality is that servants and street thugs tend to be disproportionately non-white, while wealthy investors tend to be older white men. Do you want to change that? Go do community service and encourage minority children to do well in school. Bitching about Hollywood's practices used to turn out quality (and often not so quality) entertainment just doesn't serve any constructive purpose.

OP: "Why does the black dude have to play the convict?"

You mean, as opposed to some white guy, like George Clooney or Matt Damon?

If you consider the percentage of the convict population that is black, then it makes it more realistic that its a black guy.

reply

Yet you conveniently overlook the fact that the biggest criminal is a white guy. Yeah, you're over sensitive and playing the race card.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

Murphy played the convict alright, but he also stole the spotlight from everyone else in the flick, so there's that.
