I've been watching this show with my wife for awhile. We're on season seven right now and while it's not quite on the level of the first four, we've still been enjoying it a lot.
My question to any Supernatural fans out there is why is season seven held in such low regard? Is it the somewhat cheesey Leviathans or is there something else that fans of the show have against this season?
No disrespect to Sera Gamble, but she was the Showrunner for those two seasons. It's been a while since I have watched them both but one problem was that she took the car off air for nearly a whole season which at the time angered fans as the car is just as much a part of the show than the boys. Yes, The Leviathans were crap and a big turn off. Also the death of Bobby angered a lot of fans too. Sera also found it hard to write story arcs and wrote per single episode mainly doing monster of the weeks. Both seasons were poor compared to earlier ones, they could have been much stronger. Sera I always thought was a brilliant solo writer, but not a great show-runner. This of course, is just my opinion...
shareThanks for all of that. What you said about the car makes sense. In the earlier seasons the Impala seemed like a character on the show and playing music in the car was one of Dean's defining traits. This season the car is more of an action prop that gets damaged routinely.
The Leviathans are pretty bad and remind of the campiness of Buffy but not in a good way that fits the show. Though my favorite episodes of the show so far are the random monster of the week episodes rather than the demon/angel stuff, the Leviathans don't compare. There's noone on the level of Azazel or even the different Rubys. On top of the Buffy and 90s show Hercules level of camp that the Leviathans themselves have, it seems like the show is moving that way in general. Instead of monsters and creatures in their traditional forms, there's just some dude with hot skin who is supposedly a dragon or there's another plain looking dude who comes back to life so he is therefore a phoenix. It sounds like that's going to be a continuing trend so that's too bad to hear.
I do want to say that while it sounds like I'm just complaining about the show, it's still good and we're both enjoying it. I expected it to be terrible and to drop off a cliff after season but so far it hasn't and we'll keep going until it does.
I agree with Bella. The hatred also comes from the fact that, after a bad season lie that, you can't really come back, it becomes part of the arc and you can't avoid it, especially since the Leviathans are supposed to be among the biggest baddies there are.
shareI don't think it's bad yet, but it sounds like the show is going to head in the direction of what already makes it worse than the first several seasons so I see what you mean by not coming back from that.
shareThe show was never truly bad. It kept us watching for 15 years (me for 11, because I started during season 5). But, comparing to what it was... What kept it alive was mainly the chemistry between the main cast. You could see that they felt comfortable and just had fun with it, good or bad.
shareI agree with Beauq, that's the main reason I watched and continued to stay the duration was because of the brilliant chemistry between its leads. Also the supporting cast around them were second to none. Jensen and Jared are like brothers off set, and are very close and you can see that they are. They still do conventions together three years after the show finished, so what does that say about them and the show.
"Lonely girl" scene always cracks me up just thinking about it. Only people who are absolutely comfortable together can up with gold like that.
shareWhile it is a little goofy after season 5, and there are definitely loads of misses among the hits, I still love all the seasons and the show as a whole. They obviously didn't quite know where to go after season 5 ended and were finding their feet, and that's pretty evident in season 6 and 7, but I like the swings they took and the fun they clearly had while doing so. I consider fans lucky that we got so many seasons.

Killing Bobby yet bring Cas back to life 4 times, bringing Crowley back to life multiple times, bringing back Mary, Ketch, Lucifer, trickster, and how many countless other side characters
There definitely seems like a void with Bobby gone. He did a better job at being a father figure than their dad did and there's noone else that Sam and Dean really look up to anymore.
