Feel free to show any David face moments. He says so much with just his eyes alone, which is always a sign of a great actor. Nathan Fillion (Castle) is the same way.
Is there anyone else you can think of that gives great face? Oh! Jonny Lee Miller (Sherlock from Elementary) gives excellent face. He's even better than David and Nathan. There are times when I've wanted to cry watching Sherlock struggle with his emotions using nothing but face.

Either Thai or the season 4 kind where she was doing the twist with him! His back issues have been well noted over the years. After all his latest goings on with the house being blown up, jail and escaping from the bad guys who killed Jared, you would think he'd need some rehab!
Emily gives good face? Perhaps I knew that at one time then forgot it because of the way Brennan is now. Next time I get the BONES urge, I'll go back and pay attention. I haven't seen any early episodes in ages. I will definitely check it out, though.
Did you ever watch Crossing Jordan? Emily is in that episode (Season 3, Episode 9). If you have Netflix, you can watch it on there. I've got the DVD's because I loved that show sooooo much.

Yeah, those were the days when Brennan looked at Booth with love. These days it feels like she looks at him with thinly veiled annoyance, more often than not.

NWChic, its not just Emily/Brennan herself that frustrates people, it is the writing and really a combination of factors. There is not much opportunity with either one of them to be romantic with each other. So I would say that does go both ways, and a lot of that is again with writers.
But even with that, I still feel that you can see the most difference with Emily over all. We've noted the significant changes like character choices in clothing and speech. I do not see David making similar significant changes in his style, except for his switch to Vans from dress shoes early on :). It does seem that over the years Emily has approached the show and her character differently.
For me, it's not coming from a place of picking on her or coming at her maliciously. Just observing as a fan, its such a striking difference in her character. The writing sucks on both sides. B&B are not presented with much in the way of juicy couple-y storylines. But you can still give even crappy writing your very best as an actor and I'm not sure that she is doing that anymore. And maybe DB isn't either, but again, the most noticeable difference, at least for me, is ED.
I don't know if that makes sense. It's hard to put into words the feelings I have for the show sometimes.

She is so pretty! I waffle between wanting to preserve ED as Temperance Brennan for all time and wanting ED to be on show after show after show for the rest of her life.
I get the weak writing complaint. I'm in agreement there, but I think ED/Brennan is the most fascinating character on the show. It's the Brennan character that drew me into to Bones. I had never seen either DB or ED in anything else.
Playing a tough guy cop with a soft spot for a girl, didn't seem like a huge stretch for any macho guy. But her character was much more intriguing. And yes she's changed the most throughout the series, she's become a loving wife and mother. Something I wouldn't have expected in s1. I have liked her evolution myself. I wouldn't use ED as my personal shopper, but I don't watch Bones for fashion advisement.
I guess we just see things differently - that's what makes the world go round.
The blog provides instances where ED did a marvelous job with what the writers gave her. She actually brought me to tears - when she went to visit the gymnasts father in the end scene in season 9. She has a range when they ask her to show it. Fighting with Booth after he got out of jail, or this season when she was told he was dead and she had to work with the bones...and then acting goofy when they were Buck and Wanda at the shooting competition- I think that was s11?
In my opinion, she has a ton more dialog to memorize compared to Booth, at least it seems like she does and it has a lot more technical stuff included.
I think she did a great job in this year's finale nightmares, torment and all. Booth just yelled at her and had a nice Dad moment with Christine.

It was by nature a Brennan-centric episode due to DB's directing of it. He definitely didn't have as much to do.
Of course there were no lines in the blowing up of the house. It was all action and explosions.
Now - I'm picturing a shoot-out similar to this one at the lab before the end of the series....Booth is gonna shoot it up I predict!

Oh, David Boreanaz has quite a range of characters under his belt.
He played a tough guy with a soft spot for a girl in Buffy.
He played a dark, brooding, tough guy with a soft spot for a girl (ok, more than one girl during the show's run) on Angel.
And I am quite successfully trying to forget whatever character he played in the worst Crow movie possible.
He didn't have many other roles, some guest appearances (the one in Family Guy was actually pretty funny, Aurora Boreanaz) and some voice acting.

I'm literally dying scrolling through all these scene studies. I think this one, where Brennan asks Booth to look at her parents' file, really highlights the basis of my Bones love. The way Sarah describes each look is like my favorite thing. Looking at my young little B&B is so fun!! They are seriously the best.
For me too it is Emily who is most noticeable in the way she lacks any of the emotion that she used to have when looking at Booth. It is not all her fault, it is mostly the writers. But there were some bad episodes in the beginning yet B&B still have the passion and longing for each other. The scene studies that Bnbailey showed, really showed the difference back then in how how Emily would look at Booth . We all know what B&B can be as a couple, and that is what we are missing!
Actually, that was just about the ONLY romantic thing that happened between B&B in all of S10 (excluding pecks to the lips in passing), which supports BNB's point about the crappy writing for B&B.
I think that is season 11 you're referring to with the cowboy episode. In season 10 it started out with the magnificent scene of B&B together after a Booth got out of prison.
More of those looks please And now they can kiss each other and act on it. We just need to see more of it.
While I disagree about ED/Brennan lacking emotion in these later years. I say would say if anyone is phoning in, it's DB. He's hit or miss about what he seems to get into. They do a lot of hockey stuff to make him happy and try and engage him I think. They both seem to like the undercover episodes because it does take them out of their norm. I'm sure after 11 years they are both kinda in a rut. Though I will miss seeing B&B - I will enjoy the reruns. Also I will have to delve further into Bones Theory. It looks like an interesting study.
I do agree that s10 episode 1 was the last time we had a scene with that deep feeling and looks of deep love. We should get that sort of thing at least ONCE a year!! I suppose that's too much to ask!

This is too funny - it's one of my least favorites ever! This is the episode where he starts in bed with Rebecca and then ends in bed with the Cam. Mr. Hypocrite. Can talk about how nothing is just sex, goes off and has sex that he immediately says is a mistake! LOL
I found Bones on TNT in the evenings during s4 I think. So I watched the first seasons out of order. If I had seen THAT episode - in chronological order - I probably would have given up on Bones then!! LOL It would have saved me some aggravation for sure! But unfortunately for me, I'd seen a better Booth before I saw THAT Booth. He displayed everything a woman shouldn't want in a man. The 'bad' boy that so many are attracted to, but don't make for lasting relationships!
Now there was a lot of facial expression going on there. Those sort of mixed message exchanges, I honestly don't miss. He was supposed to be the one who had heart and knew about love. But his little brain wins the day. No love involved in that episode that I saw. I will agree he looked great without his shirt, but he proved even shallower that Brennan. Because he didn't follow what he preaches. That episode ends with him telling Cam it was a mistake. But he goes on and keeps repeating it. That's the Booth that disappoints. In Aliens - Cam even tells him that they aren't cheating. But he's hiding it because he really is cheating in his heart! And what did he learn out of all of it? All of his discussions with Gordon Wyatt - did he ever express his feelings? As I said before, HH doesn't write triangles well.
Booth is a confusing man....as Brennan has said. The character has grown the least over the years in my eyes. He knows what he's doing is wrong, but he does it anyway. Rebecca,....Cam....gambling....I guess it's a lack of self control that he will always struggle with. His one strength is that he has never physically cheated on any woman he's seeing sexually. But emotionally is a different story! Not one of the women he was sleeping with - ever measured up to Brennan. I think he understood that on some level. I have to give him that much.
Yeah I think that's the interesting thing about Booth. He's the one who seemed like he had it all together but then you see he also belonged on the "Island of Misfit Toys" that he declared they all were on!
I think, though, that while he didn't always "practice what he preached" I think he was aiming for those high standards.
And Brennan herself had quite the revolving door policy for awhile, and it wasn't bringing her happiness either. I kind of saw it as they both subconsciously wanted each other but were scared to open that door...so they filled up their lives with substitutes that would never work. They were both top of their fields but couldn't get the whole personal life thing figured out.
I guess I've always seen B&B as being so similar at their core. Obviously their family lives and surroundings were different, but ultimately they are much the same. That's what intrigued me about them. Now the ending in Outhouse was much more to my liking. I saw things like this BEFORE I saw s2. So I then NEEDED to go back and see the rest of this show! They were too cute in this one.
While Brennan never hid her need for men, we never saw her sleep with two different ones in one episode. lol This episode was so cute because one was for sex and one for conversation. Silly girl had Booth right there who we all know is perfect for both!

What I wish the writers could have come up with are conflicts that could have been solved with deep feeling and discussion, not the petty comedic banter that they have given them since season 9 I guess?? There have been a few emotional eps since but they are few and far between. When Booth was presumed dead - in the hospital they could have done a better job with that conversation. I still think HH or SN would have been much better.....but I digress.
Gosh I miss Bones Theory in it's heyday. I can't believe Sarah even let me write a couple posts!! Sadly it's tapered off in the last couple years but I always go back for excellent screenshots and scene studies 😉
shareOMG, yes! The ending of Outhouse is amazing! Just like with Truth in the Lye, I was not crazy about the episode per se, but the ending B&B scene blew me away! The looks, Booth saying
“That’s not true, Bones. You’re wrong, okay. There is someone for everyone. Someone you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with. You just have to be open enough to see it. That’s all.”
And in that moment, it’s like all the air is sucked from the room, and the only thing between them is the idea that Brennan believes him. She wants to believe him.

I just don't FEEL it between Cam and Arastoo. There was no build up to it; it just was. I don't sense any chemistry, and its weird because she's their boss. I guess if Emily won't do love scenes anymore, they will find someone who will.

Let's tell him to revert to season 7. They were bickery, like in the kitchen breakfast scene, yet there was clear love and affection. And actual "I love you"s. It was also when they came out as a romantic couple where in season 1 they were not. It proves that it can be done!

I was thinking about this last night when I was watching commercials where shows were "moving to a new night" and thinking about Bones being on almost every day of the week and at different hours. At least the obsessive fan loyalty kept Bones afloat through all of that, and it gave us a season 12...where most other shows would be straight up cancelled. Like Castle.
So at least, we can be happy that they've gotten the chance to wrap this up with a happy little bow. Of course, they may squander that chance but at least they have one

It just feels like it's ending so quietly. Hopefully they are planning some cast interviews and such. Maybe they are doing those things but saving them for when it actually airs.

It seems networks want to push all their money to try to find the next new, hip show but fail to realize that there are long running shows that deserve some love and attention and there is a huge fanbase that feels neglected. I've heard people mock shows like Bones and NCIS just because they've been on the air a long time, and I've never understood why that's a bad thing?!?
Literally all 3 of the main shows I watch started in 2005 (Bones, Project Runway, Dancing with the Stars). DWTS is the only show that gets good promotion by its network, ABC. Project Runway got dumped by Bravo, I assume to air more Housewives "reality" shows, and it had to move networks. Bones, we all know the love/hate relationship with Fox!
But I am not one to jump ship every year and watch all the pilots. I watched The Office (also started in 2005) for its decade of shows as well, basically, I like to be a long term fan of things. I love that I feel like I "know" the people on these shows, its comfortable to watch after a long day at work. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But neither am I a cool or hip kind of person lol.
On repeat the other night was HitH. Such an excellent episode. Brennan really showing emotion ... excitement with Vincent over TRex, the scene when he was shot...going into Booth's bedroom and trying to understand. I thought this was a turning point in how she would act emotionally, but alas it did not last into season 10 & 11!

Besides them being great in this episode, I loved how she chose a super hero (basic Booth complex) and he chose a squint (basic Brennan). Shows how much they were channeling each other even back then! I think he felt if he made fun of squints it would deflect his love for her. Help himself combat those feelings! And she playing the Wonder Woman who could totally take care of herself, carried a big gun which turned out she couldn't shoot straight and the snakes turned her to a common woman who would want to crawl up on Booth! Of course Mr. Squint ended up being the Superman/ hero in killing the bad guy with one shot left.
I mean these things were just too cute! I loved the line about where did she even have a place to carry that huge gun!!
OK, I'm missing Bones too much and not enjoying this hiatus in which we don't even have an end point yet! On top of that zero news about filming - except they seem to be working on the s12 episode of Buck and Wanda - lumberjacks this week. It's just too quiet!

Booth looks like his world is ending, which it would if Brennan died. Of course, he would keep going for Parker and Christine (and now Hank, although they didn't have Hank at this point) but the light would be gone from his eyes.
David is a master at showing this kind of emotion. I know people have said he would be good in a comedy show, and he probably would be, but it would be a shame for him to have a role that wouldn't allow for these kind of scenes.
It's just a darn shame that DB hasn't gotten the critical acclaim he deserves. That man gives great face. He can can show a range of 65 emotions in 1 second. I'm not sure how he does it, but without any context at all, you can tell his character in that moment is just DEVASTED. You can see worry, fear, hope, nerves, sadness...all mixed in together. It's just criminal that he doesn't have a shelf overflowing with all the Emmys.

That is one thing I've always loved about Bones, is their respect for those who serve; and I think they've portrayed it honestly in Booth. That yes, they have to be involved in these life or death decisions all the time, and yes, it does haunt them when they come home. I always think of the really young guys (especially like Civil War era) who went off to war at age 18 or younger. What they must have experienced and seen...they get all my respect.
I like that Bones, while showing Booth's troubles, also showed his resiliency and sense of humor that he still had after all those military experiences. And after constantly being shot up and blown up while working with Brennan

The funny thing was, it was the same set just dressed differently. I figured the set dressers kinda go lazy after awhile and maybe chose just to go with one over the other. To redress that set all the time would have been a nightmare because they were so very different!

Okay, this has always bugged me about Booth's apartment...was is a one-bedroom apartment or was there a second bedroom for Parker? If there wasn't a second bedroom then where did Parker sleep? If there was a second bedroom then why did Brennan have to sleep on the couch???
Maybe it's a one bedroom and Parker also slept on the couch when he was around? Lord knows, he wasn't ever around much to need his own room.
