Jack Black was excellent in this

This is by far my favorite Jack Black role. Jack Black as Myles was good casting. I like "calm" Jack Black better and hope to see him in more roles like this.
Oddly, I actually liked Myles and Iris as a couple. Very cute together.

I like Jack Black a lot but my friends and I believe he was badly miscast in this film. Kate is too sophisticated and attractive for the likes of Jack Black. It strained credibility especially since Black's character was boring and colorless. Now Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate, yes.

As an apologist turned authority I don't defend my comments because I am always right.

reply

I like Jack Black...and its not all about attractiveness! I was actually glad to see Kate's character with an average guy like Jack's character. I certainly don't think he was miscasted, remember it's not about the actor, but the character the actor is playing. Jack's character showed Iris (Kate's character) that it's okay to relax and take care of yourself and have fun, as Iris was a workaholic like Cameron's character. I also feel like the movie focused so much on Cameron/Jude's relationship that Jack and Kate's relationship couldn't be fully developed.

I thought Black and Winslet were really good and believable together. Iris wasn't sophisticated. She was portrayed more as a frumpy, unremarkable, kind academic type.

Then you and a lot of your friends are wrong. Really nice to hear from you. Run away now before it kick you.

His character was in no was boring and without colour. He was clearly an intelligent, artistic, sweet, funny and charismatic person . . . just because he wasn't rocketing off on some adventure doesn't mean he is boring.

I actually like Jack Black best this way, with some decent clothes and some maturity his humour comes across as intelligent, I thought he was sexy as hell.

I'm not sure how credibility was strained or how putting Leo in the role would have helped, unless what you really mean is 'really good looking people should only date other really good looking people otherwise the movie is ruined'

RottenBeauty, I completely agree. He was sexy as hell to me too in this movie. I can't imagine anyone else playing Miles as well as he did. He's the number one reason I can watch this movie over and over and never tire of it.

Totally disagree with your friends. Maybe Kate is, but Iris isn't - or at least Iris doesn't know she is. It's why I loved their story much more than Cameron & Jude's - Amanda & Graham's relationship was all about sex; Iris & Myles' was much more about what's on the inside.

And I definitely didn't find his charaqcter either boring or colorless (with the exception of his kids, that was Amanda and Graham's characters). I found him funny, sweet, caring and real - just what a woman wants for the long-term.

I'd predict that although Kate & Jack as a couple wouldn't last for more than a week or so (Just like Graham & Amanda's...they'd forget each other before the following Valentine's Day - I think Amanda would forget about him the first time she meets a new hottie in Hollywood...) Iris & Myle's relationship would be a lifetime love affair, just like Arthur and his wife.

"Boring and colorless"?? I didn't see that at all! I thought Myles' conversations and humor, not to mention the character's incredible musical talent, quite charming, and he seemed to easily adapt to all he came in contact with. He was so engaged with Arthur and his friends, and was so supportive in shopping with Arthur for the tribute evening. He clearly lifted Iris' confidence each time they met, as well. The two adjectives you used to describe him seem mystifying to me, but I accept your opinion as simply different than mine.

I really didn't see Iris as sophisticated, either. I think it's possible that many have a hard time separating Kate Winslet and Jack Black from Iris and Myles. Other than perhaps being a bit overweight, I found Myles' personality very attractive, and he certainly didn't look like an ogre. He was successful and kind and had the kind of qualities that are appealing to most. People's "level of attractiveness", in my opinion, increases and decreases dramatically as their personality shows through. I've known many a "stunner" to appear very ugly after getting to know them, and vice versa. Just my thoughts...

Then you and your friends have missed the whole point of the film. Iris and Amanda have taken vacations--holidays--from the horrible pressures and awfulness in their lives. Iris' pressure is the toxic relationship she has with Jasper, Amdana's, work and a phony boyfriend.

During their respective holidays, vacations, they find romance, if not love, with men with whom they likely would not become involved with during the courses of their real lives.

They find men who are real, not phonies. The New Year's Eve gathering at Graham's is perhaps, alas, the ending of the good, and the return to horrid.

reply

Agreed. And look at what Iris had with a good-looking guy (Jasper who is good-looking) but such a douchebag and *beep* to her. Whereas the quirky little guy who she meets on her vacation doesn't have all those good looks and therefore more down to earth, not at all stuck up. I think Iris was very well in tune with that.

reply

Actually, the fact that Iris had points over Myles is one of the things I liked most.

My beautiful wife of a very long standing has many points on me, yet we remain happily married and are still best friends. It does happen.

Look at Ann Bancroft and Mel Brooks. Over 50 years and they were still in love when she died.

We need some stories about this kind of romance.

i totally agree ^^ i love the way at the end of the movie jack ask kate on a date kate says yes and they celebrate individually lol

reply

Me too! One of my fav parts. Also loved the part where Myles is telling Iris how he got dumped, and she gets him a drink and tells him she understands, and she starts talking about her "relationship" with Jasper and Myles sits up and goes "you need this more than I do" and gives her the drink...or something to that effect

Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will worry about itself

reply

That scene always makes me smile. Jasper and Maggie were both shmucks, neither deserving someone as wonderful as Iris or Myles.

I loved Jack Black in this film...he was adorable!!! Kate and him look great as a couple! I even liked him better than Jude Law.

I liked him, too. Really wasn't all that sure how well he'd work with Winslet, but he held up his end. Actually, I think she had more chemistry with Eli Wallach.

I still like Kate and Jack together! lol

I liked the fact that the producers didn't go for the pretty boy for a change. That's not to say a good looking guy or woman for that matter can't be a good actor. That goes without saying. But Hollywood tends to be very shallow when it comes to casting in romantic comedies. It's about charisma and chemistry and Jack is very likeable as a leading man.

reply

Great answer and I do so agree with you. Iris needed a very decent, kind, clever, funny, artistic, caring, sensitive man and that is what Jack played. I think he was great in this. He is certainly no pretty boy, a la Jude Law, but come one, he isn't exactly ugly either.

Cameron's histrionics got to me a bit and I didn't buy her ending her relationship over his cheating in a rather spectacular fashion and then going along with the Jude Law character again and again after she thought the females names calling him were other women. So her shallowness over his looks was on display.

But then she was also known for being a workaholic, someone whose own staff laughed when she said they should take a break, which suggests to me that she never went anywhere, yet without pausing for a passport, she hops on a plane with a few hours notice and flies internationally.

Still if we were looking for reality, we wouldn't be watching this right? No, IOM Jack Black was just fine.

reply

You could tell he genuinely cracked her up a few times. I bet he went off script. Anyway they had a good connection.

Rest in Peace Lee Thompson Young. An angel gone too soon.

reply

He was indeed, and this is coming from a person who ends up absolutely hating him in every movie she sees him in. I'm not a Jack Black fan at all, and I completely adored him in this.

Totally not a Jack Black fan. I did not know he could be sexy!

reply

I agree. He was great! Scroodily-doo!

reply

I'm not much of a Jack Black fan but I really enjoyed his performance in this film. An obscure but great casting choice. I always tear up a little when Arthur's "theme song" starts playing as he goes to claim his award. I'm not sure why but that cheeky tune always gets to me!
