Is this a joke?

For all the years I've used this site, I've always thought IMDB ratings were a pretty good pinpointer of deeming whether a movie was worth a watch. Anything above 7 has always been pretty good.

But with this movie.. I'm wondering if the movie was a cold parody of the ignorant's man world view of violence.

Or if the majority here are really making some sort of big practical joke, pretending to praise this movie.

I know it's silly of me to come here and say these things. I'm well aware that I probably get nothing constructive out of saying this, but it's been a long time since I've been so surprised, so I felt like sharing it.

If you read this far, and you seriously like this movie.. then tell me, what did you enjoy about this movie? I know I'm probably in for a troll roll, but I'd gladly give it a try.

The movie is a little flawed in that its a bit hamfisted, and ultimately sorta pointless and not profound, however, on the surface level, its well-made, stars a charismatic actor who we all love, who plays an interesting and emphathetic role.

And he kicks a bunch of Russian butt. Thats not a bad way to spend a couple hours. Be glad you got this, because Denzel is getting older, and won't be playing roles like this much longer. In fact, his character in this film is supposed to be an old guy, so he already IS on that cusp.

I liked a lot of stuff about this movie... I really loved the performance of the bad guy who i was not familiar with before... I loved the context of The Old Man and Sea... I liked the perfection that Denzel's character would always strive for and instill in others.

The final battle all in the Home Depot store got a little weak, i wish they would've had Denzel venturing out more to conclude the movie, but overall, pretty well done movie.

Yeah, the rating is way too high for such a terrible film, here’s Denzel Washington playing once more the trite role of pompous, self-righteous, invincible american hero, with a script as thought out by an 8 y.o.

I actually enjoyed the movie very much. I like the thought of an ex-Black Ops guy who's trying to put it all behind him and start a new, completely different life for himself. He makes friends, he has people he cares for, but he still lives that reclusive life because at the core, it's who he was always trained to be. But again, he's trying to change all that. Then he meets a young girl who he sees is in a bad life, and he tries to help her out of it, being the good, kind person that he is. Unfortunately, she's a slave to the Russian mafia. But he sees the good in her and he knows that the mafia is bad, so he tries to help her out without resorting to his old tactics. Unfortunately, that goes completely wrong, and he's forced to defend himself. And things just snowball from there, and he realizes that in order to truly help people, he needs to use the skills he was trained with. So, he decides to help anyone who needs it. It's beautiful, really. It shows the goodness that all people are capable of, even ones who have a lot of red in their ledger (to coin a phrase from the Avengers).

I do give this movie a rather high rating. It gave me everything I wanted in this type of movie and I was not once disappointed with a single scene. I like movies that leave me with a sense of hope and a smile, and this movie did that for me.

Hunger Games, Independence Day, Red, World war Z, Fast & Furious movies, I,Robot, Live Free or Die Hard, and a barrage of silly "all-the-goddamn-same" Superhero movies can have ridiculous scores way over 7, and some in the 8's,..........then The Equalizer is rightly entitled to its high rating here on imdb 

In fact, ......it should be higher.

It's somewhat of a throwback. Old school action films were cartoony, to the point of unintentional comedy gold.

Modern action stinks. They're all way too political and try to weave this Inception-level web of twists. They aren't even action movies really, they're just political thrillers with seizure-inducing jump cuts of guys getting hit or shot. This film only introduced a sliver of politics, which was refreshing.

I'll gladly take some moral grandstanding over the political snoozefests of today.

If 80's was action was "America, *beep* yeah!", this just "America... Ok.", and I'll accept that spin on it since most action movies today suck.

reply

I agree with most of what you say. But I think this wasn't without political intent. The bad guys didn't feel chosen just because it would make some cool scenes or something like that. To me they seemed chosen because those are the kind of people we should currently relate to be resent. Or am I wrong about that?
Corrupt cops: Ferguson unrest and various other dissatisfaction with police.
Russian mafia: We gotta hate them evil Russians.
Robber: Bad acting from both robber and cashier - made me feel like the main guy could justify killing a drug addict for being too depressed, and therefore not a good dream-chasing American.

I'm glad you and many others genuinely enjoyed the movie though.

It's just a forgettable action movie that has been done a thousand times, with Denzel playing the same part he always plays. It had a few entertaining moments but it was a little too ridiculous in some parts.

........Which is still no where near as ridiculous as the vapid/forgettable/O-T-T/CGI-loaded/PG-rated pap that normally passes for "action" these days, and far more refreshing than said big-budget tripe constantly in cinemas. I'd take this gritty old-school actioner any *beep* day over another by-the-numbers Bayformers/Transporter/Fast&Furious/G.I. Joke/Resident Evil/Taken/Need For Speed/World War Z/Dracula Untold/Hercules/Robocop PG reboot/Terminator PG reboot/Total Recall PG reboot/Twilight/Divergent/Hunger games/Giver/Maze Runner/Pacific Rim/Mission Impossible/..........and Marvel superhero movie # 1001.......................any *beep* day 

It truly surprises me you feel this way. I wouldn't paint all those movies you mention in the same shade of forgettable and abominable but we may agree that they are unlikely to be classics, to be watched for decades ahead.

I'm curious what you think it is with this movie that makes it so defensible. As you probably read, I found the second half really boring and even sometimes annoyingly preachy. I'm not asking you to agree with me, or to justify your opinion, but I'm very interested in understanding your view.

The Irish mob was depicted the polar opposite of what they were in The Departed.

And Denzel's character wasn't brought out of "retirement" by a cliche. The government didn't force him to do it, and it wasn't an accident. It was his choice.

Threw aside a flew cliches, kept in a few stereotypes.

IMDB has the fairest voting system, but it doesn't mean you should expect it to always represent your personal taste. I usually find my personal vote within a +/- 2 of the public one. Occasionally I find my opinion differs radically from the general populace but I am after all, an individual. In most cases when I disagree strongly with the public vote it is usually down to my opinion on the director (and is pretty consistent for that director's movies).

So anyway, nothing wrong with disliking or liking a movie, but there is no point in complaining about the voting system. May as well complain that water is wet.

reply

I'm not trying to complain. I acknowledge and accept that the rating consensus is currently diverting radically from my own view, but I was truly baffled by the rating. So much that I genuinely thought there could be a horde of redditors, /b/-people or other keyboard warriors inflating the rating for fun or something.

But I also saw the possibility that it might be genuine - which it now seems to be - and was curious what people enjoyed by this movie. I like to try understand people's reasons, views, perspectives - even if I don't share them, or ever want to pursue them.

This about sums it up. Fockin' great B+ cinema. 8* from me and I'm 36.

Just enjoy the movie. I had awkward experience with Horrible Bosses 2 before this movie (jesus, what a terrible movie and even more terrible humor), so this movie was quite a relief. Much action, pretty enough violence, not too much of plausible back story, no BS. That's all you need in these action movies - relax and enjoy. FFS, this isn't a documentary, so one-man-army concept is well accepted. Oh yeah, he did it right!

Honestly i always tough IMDB was over hard on movies. I mean, every movie that i find totally kick ass and worth a 10, they get a 8... a movie i enjoyed... wich was not uber great but ok, i would give a 7 personally... yet for people here its a 4 or 5.... i would give a 5 to only a movie i find boring ... but have still a good production value...

I think i ever gave a 3 or 4 to the lowest low budget that where really bad... to me 3 should be to ruber crap... cause 1 for me would be to a totally classless crap fest, wich usually don't exist.

Even the worst movie i ever saw in the high budget departement, Cabin Fever, i think i gave a 4 or something.

And yes movies like fight club, matrix 1, the dark knight etc for me are worth a 10... there not perfect sure, but there damn great movies that i watch tons of time...

My favorite comedies that i watch 10 times or more, i give them a 9... why? cause i *beep* enjoy them, no matter if there great movies or not.

And finally i think only tv shows usually have the same type of ratings as i would give them...

Alice is the worst character of all time, she need to die in the last movie. Chris/Jill are RE !!!

Personally, I try to not base my opinion entirely on IMDB ratings for movies in release and less than 2 months DVD/wide spread release. That's me, and 10 years here. 10mins is not a lot of time to do more research. The rating system will always be weighted heavy early, and that works good and bad. Also, I think we can all agree that we all individually have films in the top 250 that we don't agree with, and films we think should be included. Maybe we should wait for a film to be released 6-9 months or more before the negative threads, the rating system seems fair over time.
