I want to write a few things here.
First, the IMDb score is formed by fans and as such it always has to be taken with a grain of salt. 'Twilight' had a similar rating before the haters attacked it. 'The Dark Knight Rises' is in Top 250, and it is, from a purely objective point of view, awfully written and badly directed.
That being said, it is a useful tool if you know how to use it. This movie is a very good example. There is no doubt that its rating is very high and that is not surprising. Not only 'The Equalizer' is an excellent action movie but it also stands out in the genre over the last few years. As you definitely know, most action movies nowadays are frenetically paced. 'The Equalizer' is not - quite the opposite, actually, its pacing is quite slow. Most action movies nowadays feel sanitized when it comes to violence, while 'The Equalizer' is one of the most brutal movies this year. Even R-rated action movies recently rarely have much swearing, and 'The Equalizer' does. 20 years ago, when movies like this were being made very often, it would not get this much attention. Nowadays movies like this are a rarity, which is why people value them more than before.
The action scenes are nothing short of excellent and the main character is just... cool. The common viewer can very easily connect with him. The same thing made 'Taken' so successful. Also, unlike Nolan's superhero movies, 'The Equalizer' feels like its creators knew exactly what they were doing - an entertaining movie with no pretensions to be anything else. And this is refreshing, actually - to see a dark and brutal movie that is not trying to be deeply philosophical.
