How is it possible to enjoy this?

I literally cannot believe the praises for this film. It was just stupendously dull. The story line was terribly clumsy and incongruous, and the scares cheap and overdone. I can understand that everyone has their own tastes, but this was just utter trash in my eyes. How anyone could rate this more than 5 is absolutely beyond me.

Those who enjoyed it: just how?

I enjoyed this film immensely. It's a shame to read other people whom didn't enjoy it, but everyone is entitled to their tastes/opinions. Why did I enjoy it? Because the film was about psychological horror, about a room messing with people's heads because it is simply evil. It's all good fun, and the good fun from trying to figure out what's real and what's fabricated by the room.

Besides, it's awesome to see a film being carried entirely by one actor. You don't see that too often.

I don't really get what all the fuss is about, either. I mean, it's an evil room...ooh scary! The evil room makes some guy go completely crazy, but he eventually destroys this evil room (and also happens to kill himself)...ooh fun!

From your post it sounds like you've only seen the alternate ending. In the standard ending he doesn't die.

Unfortunately, you saw the ending of the movie which I feel was the weakest. The theatrical ending has Mike successfully defeat the room and is saved by the firefighters. Later while reconnecting with his wife he plays his tape recorder. His wife hears him talking to their dead daughter. It had much more impact and was an ending that satisfied the story that we learned through his time in the room. The ending shown where he dies and Jackson shows up at the cemetery to give his wife Mike's belongings and she rejects and the ending becomes about Olin, it really loses the punch of the impact of the theatrical ending. There are several other endings as well. All of which Enslin survives, but not as impactful.
I purchased the movie through Amazon and was very disappointed that I was given the alternate ending which ruins the movie for me. The first time I saw was with the theatrical and loved the movie. I love John Cusack and that the whole movie was mostly just him, he carried it well. It's unfortunate that if you see the movie through Amazon, you get the worst ending in my opinion.

I could understand people not enjoying this movie because the room is unbearably cruel. It uses Mike's dead daughter to hurt him. It's not about him working through his grief, it's about the room going deep into him to find out how to hurt him the most. I don't think I've seen another horror movie be this cruel to its character, but to me that makes this an outstanding movie.

It's an incredible movie about loss, the depths of suffering, and finding the strength to overcome it... I can only guess if that was lost on you, you either were not in the mood for the film or are quite young and haven't experienced this depth of loss yet, in which case, feel lucky.

I loved the movie; saw in theaters, and thought it was a great adaptation of King's short story, and the expansion of Mike's character (having a wife and daughter) really helped me connect with the character. It had an engaging story, great acting (especially by Cusack), and great effects with genuine suspense. Then, the DC came out, and I viewed it, and it made the film ten times better imo: it weaved a longer tale that was tragic, terrifying, but ultimately uplifting. The added scenes with Mikes father were a great touch, and added more emotional weight to the film, and really fleshed out Mike a lot more. Most seem to hate the DC ending, but its my favorite of the two: it offers a lot more of an impact then the theatrical ending (self sacrifice and ultimate redemption are really prevalent in this ending, and its more emotional and powerful with the secondary characters getting the chance to show more range then they do in the T-Cut, particularly Sam Jackson's character).

Thats my own viewpoints on the film, and why I really enjoy it.
