IMDb ratings mean absolutely nothing. Films with high ratings are films that have a lot of fanboys or a cult following.

I'd give this film a solid 8/10.

The rating is an average of opinions, not an indication of the film's quality. You liked it, others didn't (I also liked it). Different strokes for different folks, it isn't a competition.

I wouldn't say the movie is that bad, but it didn't stand out as anything spectacular to me. It had it's moments, but for the most part it fell flat. Maybe it's just my high horror movie expectations.

I am surprised because my sister and I are huge horror fans since we were children and this is the first film in a very long time that somewhat creeped us out. Somewhat is a huge deal for us because nothing scares us.

It was reminiscent of twilight zone quirkiness. Not horror, but unnervingly peculiar and creepy. Something different from all the undead/slasher horrors we see mass produced in hollywood (I'm looking at you Saw 1,2,3,4 etc etc...)

I genuinely find this movie terrifying during some parts. I give it at least 8/10.

I thought it was overdone with the special effects.
To the point where it seemed too farfetched to be believable.
Like the scene where the room temperature goes down and turns into an
icebox with snow all around.
In another scene the picture of the ship on the wall turns real and the
room gets flooded with sea water.
Then Mr. Enslin finds himself swimming and almost drowning.
Ends up on the beach with a lifeguard peering down at him.
I don't see how anybody could have gotten creeped out by this.

I honestly thought he would just end up waking up from a bad dream caused
by his drinking.
I'll be generous and give it a five.

What? It's a movie with supernatural elements. The premise is that anything can happen, because it's supernatural. Your logic is flawed. The whole point of the room is to make Enslin believe that there are such things beyond the natural world.

I too believe that this movie is underrated. It should have at least 7.5 for being both brilliantly scary and intriguing. It plays its audience on a psychological level. Depressing them by leading people to believe at first that if he passed the 24 hour mark, he would be able to get out. You rarely see this kind of emotional play in other horror films, nor in any other films in general.

The movie was anything else but scary.
The more that a movie strays from reality the less scary or frightening it is.
If you don't know that by now I don't know where you've been.
It was way overdone with special effects to the point where you couldn't even
take it seriously.
It's like watching "Alice In Wonderland" and getting creeped out by it.

If you really want to make it more believable then they could make it more
like some of the so-called real hauntings that have been reported over the
years.

Maybe instead of just repeating your point about the special effects being overdone, you could at least give a counter argument to what I said that since the story is based on supernatural elements, all the uses of special effects in the movie is as justified as in other such movies like The Exorcist. All supernatural things are far from reality, that's why they're called super-natural. Whatever things Enslin saw in the room was real to his senses.

I don't think you really get what this movie is about. It's not about a haunted room or a ghost, or about scaring people off their seats. The story is deeper than other stories about ghosts or hauntings. This is also one of the good things about this movie. The supernatural being that controlled the hotel (presumably god according to the writer) wants Enslin to understand that there are things beyond the natural world, and an afterlife. IMO, people who have contemplated the existence of afterlife should be able to relate better to the protagonist.

From a pragmatic point of view, yes, this movie is far from real. But, so are thousands of other horror movies, even The Shining, It, Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.

You have to think beyond hack and slash to understand the movie. I gave it a 7.1, it's very solid there were just some plot holes I didn't like with the electronics not working, yet he was able to access his laptop for awhile.

Why did it have to mentally torture and terrify him into committing arson and suicide, as well as leaving his wife and employer behind in a lurch?

That's non-sense. I said 'presumably god' and 'according to the writer', which implies that it might be or might not be god; And, even if it were god, how that god behaves or thinks depends on what the writer's idea of him.

Again, whoever or whatever is responsible behind all the ordeals that happened to Mike is up to the writer. But, if you think about it, there was actually no harm done at all. Everything that Mike saw or felt was probably only in his mind. In the end, even the building had no scratch. So, your question is rather pointless.

That's your own personal inference. This film is basically an interpretation of the director based on the work of other people. It might not even be a reflection to any religion. You might as well point to a random person on the street and call him a jerk.

I think it's an 8. Most american horror movies are actually not that scary, because they are predicably and you rarely feel anything for the clicheed characters. But this is: it has a frightning atmosphere, some really scary moments and also a few extremely sad moments. So it does what it wants really well.
Obviously it makes no sense to look for plotholes, since the movie didn't aim to use stringent logic.
