Dominion is a sad attempt to be an Exorcism movie. Why I liked Schraders version of Satan, he's barely in it and when he is, he's a wimp. The exorcism at the end is so fast and so unbelievable, it sucks. The CGi is terrible and there's absolutely no reason for the boy to be possessed in this movie. It makes no sense. You just don't get possessed. I heard John Frankenheimers version had lots of dialogue between Satan and the priest which Schrader cut out. What a mistake. I wanted to know more about him in this. Also, isn't Satan supposed to be Pazuzu in this??? I'm not saying Harlins version is great but it's better this Schraders. It makes more sense and is much more intense. I wish Harlin would of kept the Cheche character. To me he was the best part of Dominion. Take 70% of Harlin 30% of Schrader and the John Frankenheimer dialogue and you have one amazing movie.
OK I'm going to end this....Regan was possessed not becsause of some quiji board it was a test of faith to the priests and it was in a smaller since to make us see ourselves "Animal and Ugly"
My god THe quiji board...THe devil wasting his time with that kind of excuse
Blatty's use of the board in the story is not there for the sake of being there. The ouiji board foreshadows the later events which makes it crucial. In the 70's and 80's Ouiji boards were very popular and many believed that it could possibly lead to possession which then became a good narrative device for the film (I don't know if it also shows up in the book). If the Ouiji board was not in some way to blame for later events then why use it at all in the film?
-Now back to the Dominion...I just saw this movie with hopes that it would be good considering Paul Schraeders past as a good writer but instead I felt ripped off. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt considering that the studio heads involved interfered in the production, as most of us already know, but this movie was just bad. Technically it should have looked great considering it had a talented DP but it looked flat almost as if they did not shoot film but video. Since there was no budget for post the color correction obviously suffered but color correction can only enhance the picture not fix it by adding mood and contrast (that would have to take place during production). Now obviously these are all opinions but can someone answer the following questions as I was left confused by the direction of the story.
Why is CheChe possessed in the first place? Is CheChe African? He seemed to have caucasian features? Why?
When he was possessed his physical appearance looked improved instead of worse, which you would think would then imply that something horrible is happening. If being possessed by a demon actually improves your physical disabilities than maybe an excorcism wasn't such a good idea. They should have just locked the place up with him in it and called it a day.
During the final battle scene bewteen the Britons and the Natives did anyone actually die?
What did the officer, when he last speaks to Merrin, mean by (excuse me as I'm misquoting) "I didn't see anything if you know what I mean"? Did he actually see anything? I mean he was in the midst of battle what was so weird about that?
What is the deal with the overuse of a fog machine at the end when Merrin walks away? I know I'm now being picky and I know it was to set the mood of Merrins mysterious nature as we all know what the future has in store for him but it seemed overdone.

hehe. i agree with you on this one. it was a good idea, but the minute you start picturing the fog machine in your head, u know somebody messed up big time! there is no fog or dust or anything outside and then the second he walks out the door it is all over the joint.

Utterly agree with the title of this thread. Unlike alot of people, I saw Dominion before Beginning, and having read reviews of both, fully expected to appreciate Schrader's version far above Harlin's. I love action, and horror, as much as the next guy, but my preference is for slower, more introspective pieces that really attempt to delve beneath the apparent. I sat down to Dominion expecting to get this. I was wrong.
The film is disappointing, on every level. It does attempt to take the higher road than Beginning, but this attempt fails so utterly that the potential ultimately makes the final product look even worse in comparison. The direction, editing, acting, effects, and plotting are so undercooked that I was left scratching my head over the notion that anyone let this nonsense see the light of day.
And then I saw Beginning. Much to my shock, and surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. No, it doesn't remotely approach the original, and the overall concepts are less ambitious than Dominion, but somehow this deeply flawed film worked for me. It looks a hell of alot better, I enjoyed the returning actors more, the imagery, although blantant, ties in well to the original Exorcist, and their is far more cohension with the original Pruza character than not. Does much of it equal to a blatant rip off of the orignal? Sure, but even this ripoff reads better than what Dominion tried, and failed, to execute. At least I found myself being reminded of the original, having recieved a direct visual connection, instead of what Dominion offers, which is an aborted attempt to strike out on it's own two feet.
I never get the sense that Beginning is trying to be anything more than a decent horror picture, stuffed with disturbing imagery, riding on the considerable coat tails of the original. And yet it works far better than I could have expected. It might also help that I watched it in the dim light cast by the awful Dominion, who knows. All I know is that, against all odds, Beginning succeeded to do what it set out to do, which was entertain, and horrify. And have we forgotten that the original Exorcist, for all it's lore, does little more than the exact same thing?
i saw the beginning first and was expecting dominion to be better. like 10 minutes into it i realized it was almost the same movie, except they decided to remake it crapier. beginning was good, dominion was awful.
Destiny's just another word for not having a choice.
