Dominion is a sad attempt to be an Exorcism movie. Why I liked Schraders version of Satan, he's barely in it and when he is, he's a wimp. The exorcism at the end is so fast and so unbelievable, it sucks. The CGi is terrible and there's absolutely no reason for the boy to be possessed in this movie. It makes no sense. You just don't get possessed. I heard John Frankenheimers version had lots of dialogue between Satan and the priest which Schrader cut out. What a mistake. I wanted to know more about him in this. Also, isn't Satan supposed to be Pazuzu in this??? I'm not saying Harlins version is great but it's better this Schraders. It makes more sense and is much more intense. I wish Harlin would of kept the Cheche character. To me he was the best part of Dominion. Take 70% of Harlin 30% of Schrader and the John Frankenheimer dialogue and you have one amazing movie.
So what is the reason for Sarah being possessed? There isn't one. Stupid twist that makes no sense. Wrong, Sarah and her husband went into the church together in the beginning, the boy was a distraction from her to let Pazuzu stay hidden in her.
What is the reason for Regan being possessed? It's the same as Cheche. Random. But.. Wrong again, she used a ouija board by herself.
Satan isn't Pazuzu, Pazuzu is just never mentioned (like in the original). The statue in the crypt is Pazuzu though, an African version. How do we know it's Satan??? At least in the beginning it's a associated with Pazuzu...........
It's apparent you don't know much about exorcisms. I"m not criticizing you here but there is a method to it in every case ever reported, real or fake.
yeah i was gonna complement you on that about Regan when I read the other guy's comment about it being random. It's not at all, the whole ouji board thing is very important because (i can't remember which character in the film), but it might've been merrin or karras who said that the reason someone gets possessed is by believing so strongly in something else taking over your body. hence the ouji board and captain howdy, that's why regan was possessed. it could've been random to some point maybe, but she was obviously chosen because she strongly believed in possession in some form.
Did you guys mention that Renny Harlin's version was completely overblown with budget... and nothing but it.
Renny Harlin also can't direct horror, his horror films are like any other, repetitive boring scares that bring nothing but cheap thrills and gratuitous gore that doesn't even make sense.
The twist never made sense, she went out with the guy who killed people? what? they never explained it, and really there is no way a girl like that can live that long and get married at that church it just didn't make sense.
Renny Harlin tries to hard with the upside down crosses, the war and the war at the end was never well explained, all i have to say is schrader's version was much better not for budget and flashy graphics, but a solid well told story with better atsmophere related to the 1st. not only that but if Schrader had renny harlin's budget he could he so much better.
Renny is nothing but a hack director who can't direct anything that makes sense and always makes overblown pieces of crap.
Sarah also dabbled in the Occult - Tarot cards, which could be a means a possession. Yes, not everyone who plays with Ouigi boards and Tarot cards get possessed - I certainly don't know anyone - but when you mess around too much, you may get burned. The ouigi board thing was aparently a part of the original "true story" behind the exorcist.
You are incorrect. The statue in the crypt cannot be Pazuzu. Either it was the depiction of another demon, or it was a blatant error on the part of the set designers.
From Wikipedia: "Pazuzu is often depicted with the body of a man but with the head of a lion or dog, talons instead of feet, two pairs of wings, the tail of a scorpion and a serpentine penis. He is also depicted with the right hand upward, and the left hand downward; the position of the hands means life and death, or creation and destruction."
In this incredibly stupid movie, the statue had both hands up. Whether it's the African version or not, the representation should always have one hand up and the other down to represent life and death / creation and destruction.
Anyone who has a brain, I urge you to skip this movie. Its only value is that it is unintentionally humorous at times.
The reason why Reagan was posessed was because she was a healer, like the African boy in Heretic. Pazuzu could only enter those who had a proportionate level of good to his evil. Exorcist 4 and 4 both suck and need to be forgotten.
wow what a quarrel this turned out to be. Anywho its to my belief that the reason regan was possessed is because she made contact with pazuzu through the ouija board, because as we all should know messing in the occult in any way can open you up to demonic attacks.
Here's the deal the way I see it, Pazuzu was Captain Howdy to Regan and she 'allowed' him to enter her by means of that damn Ouija Board. Does that not make sense? If not then I/we need to read/reread the book.
Please, shut up, you, The Ignorant. You know nothing of "The Occult," but I bet you wet your bed at night thinking about it. Care to grow a pair? Then admit to yourself: the word "occult" simply means "hidden."
Exorcist II: Heretic is one of the worst movies ever made, I can't even think of a movie that was even as bad as it. Let alone worse.
And also you are putting to much emphasis on Regan MacNeil, the fact that she was possessed is incidental. The target of the possession was actually Damien Karras. The idea that Regan was healer is complete rubbish. Exorcist II both contradicts the original film and the novel in which it is based. Karras was a priest questioning his faith, the possession was supposed to push him over the edge. But in the end Karras chose to sacrafice himself rather than kill Regan.
Wow, I'm quite suprised by all the postings, some people need to relax, it's just a posting board of ideas and opininons. No need to become abusive and childish about it. That means you (deakint).
Why do people get so angry and have to shell out hate over a debate about a movie??? It should be about learning another view you might not have saw that someone did. I didn't know about Schrader's cgi being unfinished. Now I do...
Thanks trumpetgirl4life, it was what I was saying all along, from the book.
Anybody got more info or interpretations to share...............
Oddly enough these comments most of you make are atleast half true.Regan McNeil wasnt possesed by coincidence."Caused by guilt" - People thinking its their fault for something wrong happenings i.e. the separation between chris & Regans father.Pazzuzu yes is another demon another name but if any of you recall, it says in the original "she says she's the Devil himself". Then again the Devil is of many names. The Quija board isnt the reason but toying with spirits is. If it was, all fortune tellers & kids who buy the parker bros. game would be possesed. And unless she was some sort of devil worshiper, I dont think Regan really accepted the possession with open arms. Also Cheche was also not coincidental.Think about it.Wheres the last place you'd look for the devil? The power of deception. And Damien Karras wasnt the target of possession but of deception. And to all you self proclaimed Exorcism professionals and experts, How can you validate your "facts" on a subject thats religious based. The faith and belief alone in whatever your religion is and not of pop culture and the power of the art of cinema and works of fiction. You honestly believe that since you've witnessed a hollywood made ritual of cleansing out a demon that youre all the wiser in a subject thats not even fully understood by people in the actual fields of demonology, theology and so on.In the end...Dominion is superior to beginning,a summer horror flick gone bad,Heretic is a film only for those who've aquired the taste for it,legion is still questionable due to the fact that the true version isnt out,the beginning is a good movie in some ways, the original is a cinematique masterpiece, and all of you are fools who cant accept this series' value in the art of cinema and power in storytelling.
I can accept the fact that alot of you are going to bitch about what you've just written. But keep in mind, unless you are W.P.Blatty,Bill Freidkin,Paul Schrader,John Boorman, you have no write to say whats wrong! Its their movies.Their Visions. Not yours.
Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted. - John Lennon
I didn't care much for either movie, they were both ok.I think it's kinda wierd to rip on DOMINION's cgi,it's by no means good, but the effects in Renny Harlin's version are straight up laughable.I'm glad the movie has it's share of fans,It must really suck to sweat your ass off in Morrocco for months, trying your best to make a decent, serious film and then get it ganked away from you by some nimrods.
Didn't Merrin say that that there was "only one" when Karras was about to tell him about all the personalities Regan had manifested? He also said, "The demon [singular] is a liar", which I took to mean that Pazuzu was claiming to be the devil in that one, flippant remark as part of his attempt to keep Karras doubting.
I've been dying to see Dominion for some time, and finally did so last night. I can't believe I'm saying this, but overall, Harlin's version was better. Both had a lot of weak points, but Harlin's slides by because it moves past the plot holes faster. It also has a stronger visual narrative. Dominion did have a more interesting approach to the story, but I think both movies missed the mark by a good margin. It's a shame, because the material was there. I think both directors were trying too hard to make the movie "theirs", instead of just working with the story they were given. Dominion had some really weird stuff going on. Both movies should have found better ways to work within their budget than to have crappy CGI. It was distracting and laughable. your mum ate my dog
In the original movie the demon referred to itself as Legion, for we are many. Legion was a biblical reference for the demon Christ cast into the pig. Or course the book was probably more clear on who the demon was and why the possesion happened.
The demon in Dominion is supposed to be Satan. Why? I'm not sure but that was what Paul Schrader had intended, which was why they went over the mosaics telling the story of the war between the angels. In fact the last mosaic they show is supposed to be a depiction of Satan. They used that look for the final possessed look for Cheche minus the wings and horns.
I went through the film with commentary from Paul Schrader and I have to say he is freaking boring.
I liked parts of both versions. I thought Harlin's tried too hard to be like the orginal. Schrader's tried too hard to be different. If they met somewhere in the middle they probably would had a better movie over all.
You may want to switch to Crack Lite. This film is superior to Harlin's ham-handed crapfest by several billion light-years. You sound like a drunk college freshman trying to be deep.
For your education: Satan never was Pazuzu, Pazuzu never was Satan, and there is only ONE entity in these films. ONE. Pay more attention before you start barking.

And yes, bonehead, you spelled it wrong. Now please, educate yourself before you speak on the internet again.

Thank you for adding to the conversation. You have shown us the light. Please forgive our miserable ignorance and our misspelling. We are worthless compared to your enormous wisdom, your way with words, your sense of etiquette.
Did you ever think that the writers/producers/directors of these films are also ignorant to the intracacies of the occult (or the Qabalah)?
By the way, it's "For your education" not "for you education". Show some common courtecy and lay off. (...waiting for an eloquent retort...)
Sure. Those words are spelled "courtesy" and "intricacies." Dingbats who live in glass houses shouldn't attempt to throw stones they can't lift. Now please dieinafirekthxbye.
just wondering.... Surely I'm not the dumbass, right?
And regarding the crappy CGI, and the crappy animatronics they used for some of the hyenas... They had a limited budget. Even with a Lord of The Rings or Star Wars sized budget, I think they should have found a better way to do the Hyenas. And if they'd given me 50 bucks i would have made better glowing red eyes with my laptop and final cut.
I watched Dominion tonight, and I was highly dissapointed in it. It had some good parts, don't get me wrong, but I think it was over all a poor movie.
First, let's move past the CGI...It was terrible, and there are ways to get around it, such as perhaps using a real snake instead of the fake blob. In my opinion, bad CGIs can ruin a decent movie. A great example of this is The Day After Tomorrow. I didn't like the movie to begin with, but the Obviously fake CGIs made it that much worse.
The Exorcism at the ending, I agree it could have been better with the missing dialogue. This was short, and without as much faltering as I think there could have been. Also, I believe I missed something, but I refuse to watch it again...who was the woman with the stigmata?
In this movie, It seemed that Stellan smoked a lot more, being as there were fewer things that they were doing. The dialogue in this was a lot more philosophical and anti-religious at times, which I thought was interesting. But that's what most of this movie was...talking and him smoking. Got on my nerves. It's like Boogeyman. You're fine if you watch the first 5 minutes and the last 30 mins. You miss nothing if you miss the middle.
Now, maybe it's because I'm not religious that the whole exorcism thing doesn't scare me. But it's also the reason I thought the Beginning was better. There are more things in there when I saw them that I said to myself, I can see this being true. They creeped me out more.
No before anyone says, "You're opinion is wrong," or some such thing, that is in error. Opinion's are just that. Each one has their own, and it is correct because it is what they feel.
Are you people on something? Seriously? I just got done watching it and it was brilliant. Schrader did a good job on this beauty. It was a serious and it established why Marrin was the way he was in the "Exorcist" the enemy is after him. 10/10. I liked for the fact those WW2 shots weren't flashbacks.
<<<<"Also, isn't Satan supposed to be Pazuzu in this???" >>>>
Pazuzu is not Satan. He isn't even recognized in Christianity. Most pagan cultures don't recognize one good deity and one evil deity. They have many of each. Pazuzu was just a really evil demon whose "job" was presiding over pestilance and disease. A really really bad guy...but one of many evil deities or "demons" of his culture.
I mean if you really wanted to get technical they whole series of movies are false fiction.
Since Pazuzu is not a Christian demon, most likely a Catholic Christian Priest couldn't exorcist him anyway. It would take a shaman from the belief system he is from to cast him out. This was a flaw brought in on the second Exorcist movie.
Of course, who really cares about accuracy, they are great films!!!
whoever made the comment about the whole possession of the deformed boy being more cruel was spot on. he was the only 'innocent' out of all the locals; totally immune to the corruption of the outside world by virtue of his physical and mental defects, which unfortunately, in turn, lend him the status of pariah. he doesn't understand the concept or right and wrong. the standard notion of morality doesn't apply. the 'demon' corrupting him signalled, at least to me, the end of hope
