Was anyone else blown away by this movie?

I have to admit that I hadn't even heard of this film until a few weeks ago. I was expecting a boring theoretical sci-fi movie. I was wrong. This was as much of a thriller as any movie I've ever seen.
In fact, I watched again upon finishing it the first time. I've only done that to a few movies.

i loved this movie to the core except for that evil psycho surviving captain from iracus 1 thing.. it was unnecessarily added into such a beautiful movie. Mr.Danny Boyle should have kept it more realistic and central through the concepts of science. Amazing movie nonetheless. One of my fav sci-fi thriller!

I don't know why people complain about how the captain turned the movie into a typical slasher. The only thing that somewhat feels like a cliche is his burns.

If you look at the way the scenes are filmed it's obvious that Boyle was not planning on making the captain come off as a raging killer but more of an otherworldly power.

Personally I feel like his appearance plays into the whole God vs Man thing that presents itself during the movie, with the captain being the "wrath of God" telling the people to stop trying to prevent the inevitable.

Yes, the only sci-fi I would rate ahead of this is Alien and maybe The Thing only due to me being a horror fan.

Loved it from beginning to the end!
Same as many others, i never heard of this movie umtil this week.
How can such a great work pass by unnoticed?
Fantastic scenes and a joy to watch the special effects.
The atmosphere and tension made me gasp for air.
Great powerfull stuff.

Made me think of Event Horizon http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081, another movie that will be burned into my memory forever.

Absolutely love the genre!

It was one of those few films in recent memory that totally blew past and subverted all expectations I had. Completely anticipating some generic disaster movie a la The Core (which I think was also 2007?), I grudgingly checked it out after reading a positive review on a website. It instantly became one of my favourite sci-fi films, and remains in my top 10 without a shadow of a doubt.

Yes, the third act is a mess. It nearly derails the whole movie. However, the first two acts are SO good, and the combination of cinematography, visuals, soundtrack and performances (this being the biggest shocker to me) made even a soured third act palatable, and compensated enough to keep the movie as a whole an instant classic in my mind.

I have grown to love this Film, I have seen it six times now and enjoy it more every time,

I love the "hint" that the Sun is God, And he is angry because we stopped making sacrifices to him thousand of years ago, We now know "we" are made of star dust and still yet deny him So Pinbacker is sent by God to make things difficult, But in the end finds us worthy, This deleted scene back up what I am saying, Sunshine - Pinbacker deleted scene, on you tube

Rose Byrne is so hot in this film with no make up,

Agree 100%. I dont expect to come across a movie this good ever again. The feels, Chills. Ecstatic feeling during a few scenes. It's hard to explain. The visuals, the soundtrack, acting, story all so well put. The singular gripe with it is icarus 1 captain. But i've come to realize he plays a huge role too. All that is bad symbolized in him. The weakness of man. Doubt.

The increase in human knowledge is the cause of the decline of religions.

I was completely blown away when I watched it for the first time (in cinema back in 2007) and even more so after re-watching it a few days ago. It's haunting, I keep coming back to it, reading about it, watching with commentary etc.

I love how the fascination for the sun consumes these people, how they sense that something's THERE, some sort of revelation behind its physical appearance. In alchemy the sun is not the 'god' itself, it's only an image of the real thing (as is gold). Sun and gold are related in many ways, in the spiritual sense because they are both an image of the same principle. Of something divine, if you will.

Back then I didn't like the crazy captain, but now, after thinking about it, my opinion has changed. He is an integral part of the story, which is told in a very symbolic way. It's basically about the conflict between god/nature and science, a conflict that each of us deals with inwardly all the time, if only subconsciously.

We have science in the form of the crew and their mission. It's purely rational, we see this in their discussion about wether to go to the Ikarus I, there's no place for morale, it's a purely rational way. But the closer they get to the sun they can't deny that they are about to meet something unexplainable, the other side of the coin. Something divine, the creative force that we are tied to. And something inside of them is drawn to it. Pinbacker lost himself in it, and with him the irrational aspect gains the upper hand for a while. It's not simply insanity, he's really seen something (in the deleted scenes he tells Capa that he'll find god in the sun), and it's proven by the fact that he's still alive.

In the commentary Danny Boyle says when Capa is 'illuminated' in his last scene, he is sandwiched between nature/god (the light of the sun in front of him) and science (the light of the bomb behind him). He's standing between these two walls, and he lifts his hand to greet whatever he's seeing there. In the reality of a human being these two aspets are equally important, and it's through bringing them together that they can be saved.

Also the characters and their interactions are so fantastic. Especially Capa and Mace, their pure strength and sacrifices for the mission impressed me immensely, and I loved how although they used to clash due to their personalities in the end there was this huge understanding between them.

Amazing amazing movie.

When I first saw the trailer it was the music that instantly caught me. I saw the trailer in the theaters.

Later when the movie came out on DVD, I had completely forgotten about it, until I saw the cover to the DVD and thought wait wasn't that movie with the trailer and awesome music.

Bought the DVD, I lost count how many times I have seen that movie. I was desperate for the music as well. Very few movies, probably count on one hand, have impacted me so much on so many levels. Sunshine just left me stunned, speechless, mesmerized, I got emotional. Everything put together just blew me away.

I got nostalgic when I heard the Kaneda death music in the Walking Dead during the first season.

I do not generally like Sci-Fi at all, but this movie left me completely stunned.

((Damn the remakes, Save the originals.))

It's a really stunning film both from a visual POV and a writing one. The shots are beautifully framed and constructed and it's a pleasure to look at. And if you read all the backstories written for the characters and watch the film again, you pick up on all these subtleties in the actors' performances. Such a great cast at work too. I just wish the film was longer.
