She didn't play by the rules and accept that as the future Queen Consort there were sacrifices to be made. Philip likely cheated on Elizabeth after she was queen and Elizabeth had no recourse but to try to buy him off and/or win him back.

Diana should have done the same thing. Anyone marrying the Prince of Wales has to go in it with eyes open, you're not merely marrying a husband, you're marrying a role central to an entire nation. Further, how likely is it she would have had the same kinds of problems no matter who she married? Unless she married a commoner for love, she would have been with a moneyed aristocrat or a rich man, both of which would have likely to had affairs.

She should have accepted the situation, played nice in public and simply lived as she chose in private. It's not like she wouldn't have had a lot of support from Princess Margaret who faced her own romantic challenges due to her place in the royal family. And how hard would it have been to do this with the kind of money and luxury she had access to? Certainly many people soldier on for the children or family commitment reasons in spite of difficulties, and they do it without the wealth and privilege of being princess.
