Copied Story?

its definitely a revamped story of stallone's Over The Top. I know movies take inspirations from here and there but the similarities are very close. except for the robot part cause this being our time than arm wrestling which worked in the 80s.. don't go by the summary. check out the movie and see for yourself.

So no one in the "near future" nor on this website has ever heard of Mohammad Ali and rope-a-dope?

reply

I'm guessing that it's not a technique many would try in a robot fight. Most of the fights in the movies were over in minutes most often with one robot being completely destroyed. They operaters tried to cause as much carnage as possible in as short a time as possible. The robots were designed for that. Atom being a sparing robot was built for endurance above all else. He could take a pounding that others could not.
When my husband and I watched the movie we both thought of the rope a dope right away.

I though this was going to be terminator 2 in a boxing ring but turns out i was wrong.

Me and my dad just watched it and thought the same, it's like Rocky and Over The Top. Zeus was Drago, the "What he fights, he kills line." The way the fight came to be, how the fight went down, yeah it was like Rocky.

reply

Dude, Zeus was Apollo Creed. Drago was Rocky 4.

100% agree! Over the top!

Over the top is so much better than this Real Steel crap. Too bad I realized it's a Disney film only after starting to watch the movie....

I really don't get how this has a score of 7.2 while Over the top gets 4.9?! People really have seriously bad taste.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Robot Jox, an 80's movie where boxing is outlawed so they use Robots instead (sound familiar?)

And ignore the 4.8 rating its a cracking film that kids (boys) between the ages of 11 and 18 will love.

Honestly it reminded me more of an 80s anime Plawres Shanshiro. It seemed like it was an evolution of that game. Which I absulutely adored!

I agree that if you take away the robot fighting and just look at the story line it is very much like over the top. That was what I was thinking from the point the boy entered the picture. Many people have mention many robot fighting movies, but most of their story lines are totally different aside from that aspect. Over the top was very similar story wise.

The whole story is lifted from the original series of Lost In Space.

On a serious note, the movie of two steam locomotives crashing at the California State Fair Highlights in 1913 predates all the other 'original' offerings. RS doesn't revamp or rip off that footage any more than Iron Giant or Steel does; they all equally tap into our humanity. It's like saying that Rocky is a rip off of Gilgamesh, or Over The Top is a rip off of the New Testament.

I think OVER THE TOP, ROCKY, and ROCKY BALBOA were the biggest inspirations. The movie's ending instantly reminded me of the ending for ROCKY BALBOA.
