People hating on Timothy makes me want to leave society

What a great man. Reckless (some might say stupid), but with good intentions. He loved animals and nature.
After reading some of the negatives comments about him, now I understand why he wanted nothing to do with civilization.

People on here supporting Timothy makes me want to leave society.

One would think it takes more than being a self-absorbed nutcase to make someone "a great man".

Anti-socials like myself and OP admire people like Timothy and Christopher Mccandless for not confirming to the life-sucking daily routines of society. What's so great about spending your youth on schools and the rest of your life working to buy meaningless things and pay taxes?

reply

He was mentally disturbed, and it's a miracle he didn't die sooner. Maybe if he paid more attention in school, he'd know not to intrude on wild animals. Maybe if he were a well-adjusted member of society, he wouldn't go searching for a phony cause to wrap himself up in. Nothing he did benefitted the bears, and a couple of them died because of his uninformed meddling. Not to mention the girl who put her trust in him.

As far as him leaving civilization behind goes... he didn't. It was a series of camping trips. Plenty of knowledgeable, well-adjusted people can live successfully in the wild; but it's the ignorant ones like Treadwell, Christopher McCandless, and Johnathan Croom (McCandless's ill-fated copycat), who become famous for getting themselves killed. There are better people to live vicariously through.

Treadwell deserves as much praise as vacationers who get killed in the national parks trying to play with the buffalo.

I knew nothing about the guy when I started watching this, and my opinion went down from there. He was deluded, anti-social, self-absorbed, uninformed, callous, disrespectful of the bears' space, and got himself and a girl killed through his ignorance.

Does that make someone a great man?

I just hate the people saying 'he got what he deserved'. Either completely lacking in compassion or just completely oblivious to the amount of pain and suffering one would endure in such a death. Just because the guy was different, reckless and shouldn't have been among the bears as he was doesn't mean he deserves to die in that manner... Nobody does.

reply

I agree. I'd never say something so cruel as that. However, I hate when some wild animals end up getting "what they didn't deserve" when well meaning people disregard the definition of "wild" in the phrase "wild animal".

Too many folks think they can snuggle up to predators and remain unscathed. Then when they are killed, the "maneater" is put down. I've read about that happening in zoos.

At least Treadwell didn't work in a Grizzly enclosure at a zoo and get attacked. The bear would surely have been put down.

reply

Yeah... I don't think people should mess around with even tamed predators.

reply

Yes, wild animals are never totally "tame", no matter what some people would like to believe.

Remember the woman who had a pet monkey that practically ripped off her face? You can never be totally confident of a wild animal. I have enough problems with my cats. If they don't get fed on time, they get real cranky. lol But at least I'm bigger than they are!

reply

Yes I agree... They belong in the wild.

reply

No, he really did get what he deserved. That doesn't mean I'm happy it happened or anything, death by bear is probably the most painful and terrifying way do die there is, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. He was clearly messed up in the head and it's a shame he didn't find peace some other way. But all that doesn't change the fact that if you mess with the bull you get the horns. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Or treat bears like dogs, get eaten alive. Tragic, unfortunate and I wish it didn't happen, but the fool got exactly what he deserved.
