Just wondering which movie everyone thinks is better? I personally think Candy is alot better and more realistic. I just saw Requiem for the second time after watching Candy and I don't think it is that great of a movie but it is ALWAYS mentioned among favorites with people. But that's just my opinion. Anyone else?
I absolutely loved both of them but I have to say I like Requiem better. It was a much more brutal look at the effects of drug-taking. Who knows, I might like Candy as much as I did for Heath Ledger. It was still a good movie, well directed etc, but I'm imagining it with some other unknown Aussie actor as Dan and suddenly it doesnt seem AS good
So far: 17-8 in favor of Candy, not that it's a competition, but it's quite surprising, considering RFaD has a score of 8.5 and Candy 7.2 on this very site. I guess the board is not a representative sample of the voters.
How can you say this is apples and oranges? of course not all aspects are the same, it will make it a complete rip-off, which it is not. Here are some simmilarities: 1. The main issue is the same - the negative effects of drug abuse 2. main characters are in their early twenties 3. one older chracter 4. segmentation - heaven, earth, hell / spring, summer...
It's been a while since I saw RFaD, so I don't remember more...
As for my preference, I liked RFaD much more. Candy didn't really effect me and Ledger really robs me the wrong way (gave it a 5), maybe it was more realistic, but I've never done heroin so I can't tell.
I liked both films, but Candy was definitely better. You actually care about the character in Candy and the love story is moving because we can all relate to a love falling apart for practical reasons.
Candy is Requiem for a Dream "Lite." The film is easier to access on all levels, including story and character development, cinematography, etc. Requiem is brutal, depressing, frantic, artistic, and ultimately not a film for the casual movie-goer. Therefore, as with all VS arguments, it depends on the personality type of the individual.
They're two completely separate movies for me, and I love them both a ton. Candy focuses more on the relationship side and presents things in a very real way. The dialogue, the scenes with the parents... everything about it came across as being real. (Not being Hollywood is the real difference).
Requiem is one of my favourite movies for other reasons. The way the film is carried out is beautiful. The music, each passing season, the crazy hallucination scenes. So many people criticize it for not being accurate. It simply didn't need to be. The idea of these four related people all ending up in such poor states clearly isn't realistic- who cares? It was a great watch no doubt.
Requiem operates with very different characters. Candys two main characters are both drug-abusing artists which is quite common but still i prefer the diversity of Requiem more especially the tv-addict and pills-addict mother.
Requiem for a Dream is on a whole different level from Candy. It's more well-known, so there will be people who try to downgrade it subconsciously for that reason. Ledger is better as a lead than Leto, but that's the only advantage Candy has. Requiem keeps you engaged the whole film. I found myself fast-forwarding, yawning, and rolling my eyes throughout Candy. It wasn't even 2 hours, but it felt like 5.
Funny, i haven't been able to forget one single scene in RFaD, and as a former drug user i must say that it's the most disturbing movie i have ever seen involving drugs. It really nails the depressing feeling i got when i was doing drugs(Or rather the after effects of doing them)
I just saw Candy today, and i can't even remember the last 10 minutes. It was a good movie, but very forgetable to me, and not exactly disturbing for a former drug user. It's just a love story with drugs, and people split up all the time, it was probably for the best in the long run.
