Your thoughts on Adams Æbler ?

I just saw the movie yesterday, and I'm still very torn in my opinions of it.
In one way, I found it very funny and again very tragic!

Does anyone else see this movie as a (subtle?) critique of religion/christianity - a critique of "turning the other cheek" ?
Or was it maybe a request not to criticize others religion and choice of ignoring facts of the world?

- I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, did he fire six shots or only five? Well to tell you the truth, I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk? -

I think you can the film in a lot of ways but it's totally inspired by the job book in the old testament.
And the neo nazi finally understands the true meaning of this story of the bible. And at the end he admits to sing the song because it's how deep is your love ( oh god). A really good story about changing hearts and how a bad bad events , the shoot out of ivan finally removes his tumor, can bring unexpectibly good things...

i don't know. I have seen the movie and I'm really not sure what do think about it.

I'm certainly sure that it doesn't want to show that there is no evil btw, - but that didn't concern me that much afterwards.

I saw this movie together with a spanish friend. she had totally got the movie in another direction than me.

So speaking as a german - growing up with the awareness of neo-nazis - i still have problems that the neo-nazi is the one helping afterwards everyone, because it shows a different light (they aren't that bad - you just have to show the good side in them). But what they don't show is that most neo-nazis are dumb. (i really mean it). there are only a few exceptions, and those use the big dumb majority for their aims. so that was something i really didn't like about the movie

another thing that i was shocked, i saw this movie thinking it was a comedy, but i think it should definetly have also the tag "drama". because the lifes are dramatic, the story has funny parts, but mainly is dramatic.

though I'd probably say stil that it was a good movie.

I will repost from another thread ---

Danish Humor in general can be very hard to fully understand :-) We have so much dark humor and exadurating comments that the hidden tone can be very hard to catch ... ( hope that made sens )

I would actually like to see this movie in a foreign language ( not english ) So I would have to read subtitles, it gives another feel / touch to a movie :-) perhabs it would be more of a serious film .. dont know.

And thumbs up to this film : >

If you read book of job it makes a lot more sense.

At one point, I agree, there's the suggestion that religion is a form of denial. But mostly it's a (rather flawed IMO) version of the story of Job. If you take it as a critique, it's of Old Testament morality, but I don't think Jensen managed to be that deep. It is a clever film but not as profound as it want to make out it is IMO. I'm not a bible fan, but the OT story is rather better when it comes down to it.

i think many of dont see where the director is going with this movie...

ill just shoot out of my memorie of my childhod learnings of the book of job? wasent it the devil and god that was having a discussion about jobs believes was strong enough? and the devil did all sorts of things to job but he wouldent break even on his death lay he praised god? i think its something like that..
what if the nazi was send as the devil too try to take jobs believes away, wouldent that make sence.. he tries too take ivans believes out, to the point where he almost break.. the ending contradicts this abit i know with him surviving and loose his faith and all, prob something i missed but i think its something like this...

dont underestimate the director.. the danish directors usually try to use alot of symbols and make alot of deepness in there movies...

oh and btw love the cat scene :D was so funny when the cat got shot and they discuss its death reasons lol xD

very funny and very tragic...
funny yes (mind you, I wet my pants watching this treasure), tragic no.
this film is in all its aspects so completely over the top, it's neither tragic nor offensive.
subtle is also not a word applicable to this film; the jokes and parodies are so straight in your face, they're really hard to miss.

Love these Danish films, from Dreyer and on. After seeing this film I'm now reacting to trespasses with "that is rude" and turning the other cheek! How long this will last,I don't know. 9/10

I am thinking insane hatred drove them all; if not that then maybe bad mayonaise.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Agree! What I normally would've found very hard to watch (cat (&birds!) being killed, beatings, faces blown off) was not so hard. That's how we were meant to perceive it & the director made it work (altho I imagine that wasn't an easy task?!).
IOW, in your face, sure, but brought to film in a perfect tongue-in-cheek manner that forces you to contemplate how you should feel from scene to scene, wondering "is this sick & disturbing...or really, really funny???". A lot of both actually.....all at the same time.

Really enjoyed this film.

I think that far from being a critique of the turn the other cheek attitude, it shows (to me) that from a human standpoint, the relentless belief in others is frankly irrational and delusional...but it's the attitude that saves the world.

like the joke in Annie Hall(paraphrase):

Man (to psychiatrist): "My Brother thinks he's a chicken."
Psychiatrist: "Well, have you told him that he's not."
Man: "No...I need the eggs."

The fact that Mikkelsen bleeds from his ear when confronted with these contradications shows that the human being is not meant to contain these contradictions...they destroy us. I'm not religious, but if the purpose of religion is to put man in touch with that kind of irrational redemptive force, then show me the way.
