I am not particularly a cat or dog person, but I think the cat scene (along with the other violent scenes) serve a point in this movie. I purposely avoid movies with violence, unless it is there for some historical reason (ie. movies about slavery or the Holocaust, for example). In Adam's Apples, however, the whole message of the movie is about our perceptions versus reality and how to reconcile that in the face of the obvious.
I mean, one could feasibly argue that it's also ageist because an older character was not allowed to leave service to go to the bathroom. For that matter, there is a reason to boycott any production for almost anything we dislike instead of using those moment of righteous indignation to examine our own belief systems.
For future reference, there are usually plot keywords listed for movies on IMDB. "Killing a cat" is listed among those for this one.
