Did anyone else love May Boatwright?

I wish that i could meet someone like her in real life, because she was so nice, even though she was really sensitive and emotional. Sophie Okonado brought the character to life in this movie. When she died, i was sad that she did that, and i wished that she couldve changed he mimd. I think that her sisters shouldve put her on some medication, so that she could help keep her mind regulated and at peace. I wonder if they even had medication for the mind ready for the public in 1964. That stuff back then may have even caused her to get worse or have some adverse side effects.

I loved that character and was so sad when she died. She was just so loving.

Sophie Okonado's performance as May was my favorite in the whole movie. Surprisingly, she even beat out Dakota Fanning in some ways, which is a huge accomplishment. To be that simple-minded and to love everyone without question...that's an inspiration. It's a tragedy that Okonado wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. Her character definitely had the emotional range and depth to warrant an Oscar nod. It wasn't just a fluffy little role.

you know that's a good question (about the medication in 1964 for depression, etc.)...

i've always heard people say who had mentally ill family members that doctors and people were always insisting on them being 'put away'

I loved her character too! She seemed like a teenager in the movie. It's hard to believe that she's a glamorous 40 year old woman. Very good acting by a great actress.

I agree with you, IdaRose! She totally acted like a teenager in the movie, and that's the way I perceived her the entire time. When you really look at her, you can tell she's older, but her personality and mannerisms make you completely disregard that in the movie. Amazing performance.

That's very typical, maybe especially in the South, so as not to have to admit they have no clue as to what to do AND it's hoped that it keeps down the comments from others that it probably runs in the family.

I know right. She was so sweet and caring, and kind to everyone. Someone could've beat her up, and she would still probably have love in her heart for them. Like I said before, I would love to meet someone like her in real life. I would love to be around her, even though she cried a lot. At least she's not fake and two-faced like a lot of "normal" people out there. However, I do think that if this movie took place in the present, she would have received some medication from a doctor for her constant battle with depression.

I loved her performance as well. I loved how sensitive she was to the sad side of life and showed it so well. Very endearing, indeed.

May was a sweet sensitive person and Sophie's performance gave her that extra vulnerability that made us love her.

I absoultely loved her character. she was so sweet and sensitive. Sophie gave the character depth. I was devestated when... well you know what happens. :-( her childlike mannerisms and compassion were great to watch.

I did too and agree with the general consensus here. I thought her wall, her coping mechanism, was one of the most unique and creative elements in storytelling I've seen in awhile. The subtle camera shots of it after her death and at the end expertly conveyed its poignancy. This film should be at least an 8/10.
