if made today

Goodness, if this was on a modern streamer. 5 seasons with 8-10 episodes. Now, I like tight writing, but shows also need room to breathe.

then we wouldn't have gotten that amazing episode of Jack getting his tattoos in Thailand 😛

Ahahaha, far from a favorite episode for me, but I'd rather have that than have so much stuff cut. As it was, they didn't explicitly answer everything. Don't get me wrong, I actually like the finale and didn't feel everything needed spoon-fed. But lack of answers was a common criticism. If the series were shorter, they'd have had less time and answered less. Yes, one could argue that if they did that, the writing would've been tightened and they could've better answered the questions that were posed. That might've left the show feeling more surface-level than the deep-dive we got. Which is probably part of why it's so memorable that it's still discussed. A lot of new shows that are shorter in all regards probably won't be as widely remembered come 2044.

I concur with your position. But I also feel it's worth pointing out to readers that Stranger in a Strange Land ("Jack's tattoos" episode) is not only an amazing episode, but one of the best for Jack. The flashback may seem trivial or boring,so I understand the hate, but how Thailand acts in service to the Island events and provides context for Jack's behavior and characteristics which are further defined later was essential for the fullest storytelling appreciation. Much better than Sawyer making a deal with the warden in prison, or Jin buying a stuffed panda for the ambassador.

"He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us."

Jack: "That's what it says... that's not what it means."

There probably would be a 3 year gap between seasons as well. Also probably more cynical humor and pop culture references like a “Marvel” movie instead of taking itself seriously.

This is why 00s shows were the best!!!! đŸ’Ș

Wouldnt work today.

The TV landscape as we know it would not exist without this show.

Insert Twin Peaks into that sentiment in place of LOST and I'll agree with you.

Pretty sure Kate , Sawyer or Juliet would have been GAY if made now

reply

The actor playing Sawyer is gay in real life anyway.

Too expensive with the original cast.

Even though 90% of the cast is unemployed.

For some strange reason this show did not do well in syndication.

Probably because everyone knew the ending all along.

reply

I guess I wasn't really thinking in terms of cast salary, but then that brings up their current careers and inflation, neither of which is my point

I'd say it's just not a show for syndication. Some syndicates will be completely random with the order they air episodes in. That might be fine for most sitcoms, but not for LOST.

Everyone knowing the ending all along? The only people I've met who believe that are the ones who still convince themselves "They were dead the whole time"

reply

As I mentioned on a different thread I don't think it really matters if they were dead the entire time or not. Reason? In season 6 it is revealed that they are definitely dead in the "sideways" reality, so what went on before should be enjoyed as the journey -- right before they hit the end stage -- whether they were already in the afterlife the entire time or not.

The writers introduced ideas about dreams here and there throughout the series. Also that the Losties were dead and on an island of death. So one could chalk either of those ideas up as red herrings to throw people off, or take those ideas and grab one and run with it. Even if you don't like either of those ideas it has to be acknowledged that the writers put them there for a reason. Because they are definitely there.

It's all fun in the end.
