Doesn't Jodie Foster Look Totally Out of Place In This?
Not that I think actors should be typecast, but this kind of family fantasy adventure movie just isn't her thing. She was created to make thrillers.

and then when she does thrillers you all say "I'm sick of Jodie Foster doing thrillers" "Can't she do something lighter" Guess she can't win. And if you know anything about her 40 long career she has done films in so many different genres. It seems kids these days only know her from Panic Room and Flightplan .She's so much more than that. Look up her career.

sharei saw the trailer and immediately felt she fit perfectly. she's a brilliant actress and can make practically anything fun and watchable. the early reviews are already praising her performance saying she's fun, crazy, and totally believable.
shareThe Brave One made her look too hard, and this is a smart move on her part as a vehicle to soften her in the eyes of the public. It was probably easy for some out there to take her last role as a tough "lesbian-type" role, even though anyone who saw the movie could argue against that. A lot of her roles have been edgie, hard women (Right, Clarise?)and she needs work that counters this image.
Here, her role is an awkward city-person meant to be out of place. In this character, she can unwind in the eyes of her fans and begin show a much softer side. I think she will work well with Abigail Breslin if she embraces her character's awkwardness and vulnerability.
Julia Roberts had actualy alienated a lot of fans with her wackiness circa her marriage to Lyle Lovitt, yet casting her as the lovable dupe in My Best Friend's Wedding brought her back. She was a modern day Lucy Ricardo that took some of the negative press she had gotten and used it to her benefit. By the end of that movie, most people had forgotten about that whole Lyle mess. Most people.

yeah you can't just place labels on an actor just becuse they have done a lot of films in one genre. And if you were familiar with her 40 year career you'd know Foster was the queen of disney comedies when she was a kid and teenager. And she was awesome in all of them. She can do a lot of stuff. She's not a one trick ony. She was great and charming in Maverick too.
Judging by the trailer, she fits right in. And it's funny because I saw Foster point out in an interview that a lot of the characters in her films deal with fear, and this character is an agoraphobic reclusive writer so it's like her playing the funny side of that fear.

This is definitely a throwback to Foster's old Disney days (Tom Sawyer, Candleshoe, etc.). Having grown up seeing her in a lot more than just Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and/or Taxi Driver, she doesn't seem out of place to me at all (I suppose the test will be seeing whether or not she's actually comfortable in this role). Silence of the Lambs is what really stuck her in the thriller category, with very few diversions. I love thrillers, but her last string has been particularly bleak (Brave One, Panic Room, Flightplan).

If anyone is qualified to give advice on how to sustain a career that you started as a kid, then it's Jodie! Plus, if she does more family films then she can safely entertain her own children.

...that's the reason why I'm excited to see this movie. I always imagine serious actors/actresses to be in comedies and vice versa. When will we ever see Jaquien Phoenix to be in a comedy? So I'm excited to see this.

shareI saw it today too and totally agree that Jodie is wonderful in this movie. There were around 15 - 20 children in the theater when I went. I heard them laugh numerous times during Jodie’s scenes.
I saw this yesterday with 3 others, we all enjoyed it.
Jodie did a great job with her character (she is just a great actress)
and seemed suited for the part.
My favorite movie that she has ever made was "Maverick"...great comedy...
shows she is very versitle.
I liked that after all these years she could make a movie aimed at
kids, just like she when she was a kid and made those cute Disney movies.
At least she has now made a movie that her children can watch.

Actually, it would be nice to see her in a GOOD comedy but that one is baaaaaad.
There were many children when I went to see it and they did seem too excited either.
I haven't seen it yet, but had the same thought about Foster.
She is one of the most serious people i have ever seen in interviews and her roles reflect it.
But, like others, i feel like she is a professional and could do anything.
She probably wanted to do it, just for fun and so she doesn't get typecast.
Foster was brilliant. She was only thing that made this otherwise saccharine and derivative movie bearable for adults.
She has that nervous tension that makes her believable as a neurotic, but she's also strong and sinewy enough to make her believable as a hero figure. She's great at emitting tenderness at unexpected moments.
