Fear and Loathing vs Scanner Darkly vs Requiem For a Dream

Which is the best?

Out of all three I would have to say Fear and Loathing is the "best", followed closely by A Scanner Darkly and Requiem coming in far, far behind. The reason I cannot stand Requiem (I generally do not like any of Aranofskys films) is it is completely unrealistic, now I don't know how the Doctors are in New York but if they are prescribing enough amphetamines to make this old lady go completely off her mind, just from her simply asking I am surprised the whole city isn't burning down. And the way the 2 mates are just casually wheeling and dealing through out the first hour of the film, no signs of extreme substance abuse(apart from when he steals his mums tv) and then when the supply dries up they become raving lunatics on a war path. Now I don't mean to sound heartless but if they were that extremely junky than perhaps jail was the best option for them, to take them off the streets and lock them up. I myself was a heavy drug user but have slowed down in the last couple of years significantly and I can say that Fear and Loathing probably best portrays the sort of madness that occurs when the user is taking hallucinogens. I once was tripping on mushrooms we were sitting in a completely normal room watching G.I. Joe (probably the weirdest *beep* that was happening) then 5 minutes later everything was *beep* up, 4 doors were open every window was open, all the sofas were turned around, the tv was facing the wall, we were up drinking cold tea and eating cereal at 4 in the morning, so I can say personally that Fear and Loathing is exactly the experience you will have when you trip out. A Scanner is a little bit too out their, when refering to story line, it doesn't really touch any real life experiences while extremely funny, that what it comes in second.

Why would you compare them?

These movies really weren't striving for the same message at all

A Scanner Darkly was a scifi film that, while centering around drugs and junkies, had several layers of depth to it. It's as much about drugs as it is corruption or government surveillance.

Requiem for a dream is a long movie about how bad drugs are

Fear and Loathing is a very fun and entertaining dark comedy/satire about what drugs do and the people who take them.

You might as well throw in Bug to this list while your comparing the movies

Why not throw in BUG POWDER... "Naked Lunch"? ("My God, Joan, you're acting like a full-fledged junkie. And it's bug powder fer chris'sake!")

In all candor, I agree with the last post: all three movies are different, and shouldn't really be compared... though i think it's easier to parallel SD with F&LiLV: both reference fictitious drugs, both have elements of dark comedy, and both contain autobiographical elements. Which, of course, brings us back to Naked Lunch...

I am having trouble deciding between Requiem for a Dream or A Scanner Darkly.

I could watch A Scanner Darkly over and over and still enjoy it. I also enjoyed the book.

Whereas Requiem for a Dream cannot be watched too often, it is a real depressing film. It has had the greatest effect on me out of the three though.

However, I think I like A Scanner Darkly the most.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for enough good men to do nothing.

Darkly is the bottom of the 3 for me but I still think this is an underrated film. I really like it

The other two movies are much more powerful

Trying to rate all three I would say

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - 7.5/10
Requiem For a Dream - 8.5/10
A Scanner Darkly - 7/10

Brief explanation for that is because I felt Requiem really made me connect to it, I was crying at the end at the situation of the characters, it was really depressing but that didn't really make it lose its quality.
The dark comedy in Fear and Loathing was amazing, and the whole concept of it and such was pretty cool too.
Scanner Darkly had its own merits, the animation did make it stand out though it made the movie a bit more confusing. The ending was pretty good, has a decent twist at the end

Trainspotting trumps them all!

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to it's awesomeness.

Pizza vs cheeseburgers vs tacos

All of them are good in their own ways. It doesn't mean one is better or worse. Subjective.
