He plays the same role in every movie!

I kind of liked him in Juno, because that role seemed to fit the movie. But he plays the meek, shy, and mumblig character in every movie! Even his "alter ego" in this movie seems the same as him, really! I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm just judging by the commercial.

But am I alone in thinking that he plays the same, exact character in every movie?

reply

Who cares!? This movie was hilarious!!! Funniest movie I've seen in a while.

reply

He actually plays the exact opposite of his common roles in this movie if you think about it.

Look, actors typically play a variation of themselves in most of their roles. This doesn't mean what they are doing is not challenging. Try acting. Take a class. Most people absolutely suck at it, and don't know it.

Now, there's a difference. When you're watching Morgan Freeman in a movie, you're not seeing Morgan Freeman. You're seeing the character. He sucks you into the movie. He's captivating. In Bruce Almighty, he IS God. In Shawshank, he IS a prisoner. This is because he's actually not the same in every movie. He looks the same, he sounds the same, but he's doing subtle things with his characterizations that distinguish his characters. He was a much more vulnerable and less sure character in Shawshank than in Bruce Almighty, for example. Gene Hackman is another guy who it's easy to look at and say he's the same in every movie, because he also has such a distinguishable look and voice that it's hard for him to physically escape into a role. Yet he does. He's an incredible actor. He's very different in each role, it's just difficult for a person who knows nothing about acting as an artform/technique to analyze the differences. All they know is they loved him in the movies.

Now, to Michael Cera. This guy has a certain talent at playing a certain ball-less type of character. Yet unlike with Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman, no one mentions this guy as a great actor, and people overwhelmingly feel that he plays himself over and over. It's just an instinctual feeling that allows us to distinguish between great actors and good actors and bad actors, but it's based on very specific things that they are doing. The great ones know exactly what they're doing. Every movement is timed. Everything is deliberate. Michael Cera so far has shown no such talent. He's good at what he does. Don't knock him. He puts asses in the seats. That's all that matters. But don't pretend he is doing anything more than reading lines. I don't see any depth. There are certain physical things an actor can do to portray the illusion of depth. Cera doesn't understand those techniques. He's perfect for the roles he gets, as awkward teenagers, since there's no depth required there, but I will bet you that he doesn't branch out and become known as an excellent actor. It won't happen.

Who cares about how Michael Cera and Morgan Freeman are identical I don't think he was saying Morgan and Michael are equally the same actors I think he just pulled Morgan out for a comparison. And besides who cares whose a better actor, everyone who loves or hates Cera will not change what he plays nor what movies he's in. I completely agree he plays the same character in every movie, but I happen to like the character he plays and its basically how he is in person (interviews, etc..not like I know him).

But anyway is this what everybody is losing sleep over these days? The economy is terrible but its more important that the range of Michael Cera is minimal, being as I see 20+ posts about it on his movie boards as well as his own page. When I see your names in movies and your name on the oscar nom list, then it will be safe to say your backlash will be significant.

I love how people are saying the characters being played are all the same, yes Micheal Cera does fall into a category of the shy quircky guy,but he has played a teenager in ever movie and has not really has not been in a film where is character has a had a mature role. Cera gives the performance the character usually needs giving it a kind of out of sync personality with quick and clever comeback jokes that make his character interesting. Comparing him to Will Ferral is way off, will ferrell does act the same in almost all of his roles but that man knows how to get laughs and could be one of the best of all time. And how the hell did Morgan Freeman get in this discussion at least Johah Hill and Ferrall Are comedians but Freeman he has done so many roles and is and icon because of his voice no way in this category.

Every person has their own brand of comedy, a script can make the actors or the actors can make the script, or a timebomb goes off and you get gigli.

Will Ferrel stopped being funny after Anchor Man, he isn't new like Cera so he had plenty of time playing something different. Nobody is giving Cera a chance, he's only 19. Wait till he's been around for 10 years and see what he's accomplished.

Sweet merciful crap!

Ok Morgan isn't always in the same role but he has developed a character a lot of directors like to use. And it was a mistake to use his name on this board since cera isn't even good enough to watch a Morgan Freeman movie. If cera doesn't do something different then I think he's gonna flop cause I don't see much depth in his acting sorry. Even Shia lebouff has done other roles and some were ok like disturbia and the first transformers. Juno and Superbad were cera's only successes right? Although he wasn't the star of Juno so its success wasn't due to him.

Sorry, but this was Cera's best performance to date. yes, he plays the typical awkward character but he shined in this film due to his timing and delivery. Good Job, Michael!

Will Ferrel is actually a decent actor. Stranger Than Fiction and Melinda and Melinda he was still sort of goofy but those characters are highly distinguishable from his Ron Burgandy/Ricky Bobby personas and in a totally different range.

Michael Cera is more or less a monster truck arena, his growth as an actor has been and will be confined to an oil slick pattern placed down on the pavement by a big rimmed Cadillac. I think it's ironic that such a talented clock cleaner could become a bass driven mastermind, same water front fog warning over Cassadagan evenings. I will sell my night sky eye glasses to match a mesh tank top, put Ray Lewis in coach, I'm ready to play, today.

What the hell does that even mean. Please give me some of what you're on.

Vince Vaughn plays the same guy in every film. but Is guess it's ok if you make a film every two years.

you can say that for just about every actor on the planet for most of their roles. i dont get why people jump on him for this.

reply

Not true. He plays a stuttering, socially awkward young hipster who comes of age and gets the girl who he thought was out of his league in most of his other films, but in 'Year One' he plays a stuttering, socially awkward *caveman* who comes of age and gets the girl who he thought was out of his league.

reply

I agree that he should try some new roles, and see how that goes. I for one would enjoy seeing him in some different situations.

reply

Johnny Deep plays very similar characthers all the time. And then people complain about Christian Bale's ability? Fantastic range he got.

reply

Yep. And that character gets realllllly old after awhile.

reply

Yes, I agree.

Doesn't matter what movie or actor.

It gets annoying.
