Be honest, did you see the twist coming?

There are 2 types of people who watched this movie.
1. Everyone who did not see the twist coming.
2. Liars.

I don’t believe in ghosts but I’d pee myself if I saw one

Yeah, I saw it coming... like one or two seconds before it's revealed! What a great film!!!!

reply

Yes I saw it, but it took a bit. As a Mamet fan I kind of look for those things.

Actually yes, I saw the twist coming shortly after he asked the guy for the $20,000. Although, as the movie went on I started suspecting I was wrong. I only saw it coming because I've seen many movies like this, the twist wasn't especially original. However, the other twist, that the guy was alive I didn't even consider. The main reason was because it was fairly improbable, as many parts of the film were. Nonetheless, it was a good movie.

I avoided this film for a long time because it had Jennifer Aniston in it, and I hated Friends mainly because of her actually - I don't think she can act.

Anyway, after reading up on the storyline, I figured it might actually be okay. But what spoilt it for me was that I happened to look down at the forum, and the main threads were "Did you figure out the twist?" - so straight away, I'm already looking for a twist in the film. And I spotted the twist right at the very moment she was 'raped'.

I think when people start threads that might relate to a plot twist, they should just call the thread "Spoiler alert", and keep it at that. By mentioning a twist, it's spoilt things already. Not to say I might not have noticed the twist.

As for LaRoche not being dead, it was fairly obvious that he wasn't dead because Charles still had that plastic dagger on him from Winston - and in such a tightly-scripted story, I couldn't imagine him having a plastic dagger and never using it. Ergo, LaRoche had to be alive, and Charles had to avenge Winston's death. That final act makes it worthwhile having one of the good guys die early on - a simple plot device in most films.

The films with twists that I did NOT see until very late on are:
The Sixth Sense
The Usual Suspects.

i knew Charles was getting conned right away when Laroche appeared in the room, kicked his ass and raped Lucinda.
but the last twist surprised me (Laroche was alive in prison).

reply

ahh life must be boring for some of you guys who know everything as it happens. Living, breathing Sherlock Holmes-esque characters.

At one point before it was revealed I did wonder as to whether they could play it like that (what stuck out was there was no photo of Lucinda on the site - thought it may have been a red herring) but I thought it may have turned out that both were being blackmailed so they'd both have to work together to stop cassell. However, when he starts tracking her I was like fair play to anyone who isnt cynical towards twist films, and to anyone who isn't immeasurably hyper perceptive they've done well to cover the twist.

Why not just sit back and follow the story as opposed to 'working it out' before the opening credits?

reply

i don't know about you, but this kind of a movie makes me think, and it's not something i can control. i can't just sit back and watch it like some teenage comedy or an action movie.
first part of your comment makes no sense. maybe you are jealous someone guessed what was going on and you didn't, i don't know.

reply

I totally did not see it coming. I had my doubts for a second or two, but i got sucked back in the movie. Great movie, both main characters were near perfect. Superb work.

reply

I didnt see it coming, but it wasnt such a good movie, so i lost concentration.

Darkness lies an inch ahead

I gotta say I figured it out in the first act - it seems really predictable in execution. But it didn't lessen the experience too much
