I thought pumpkin was very pretty in the scene where she found out Mother was not going to adopt her.

Was Hatsumomo suppose to be the prettiest throughout the movie? Because if Sayuri was supposed to pass her then they definitely failed in that regard. She was pretty and cute but nowhere as beautiful as Hatsu.

The book implies that Hatsumomo is supposed to be the most beautiful geisha, physically. Mameha is supposed to look "elegant". Sayuri is "lovely".
So, definitely Hatsumomo is supposed to be the most beautiful geisha. Sayuri is meant to surpass her only in likeability-which I thought Ziyi Zhang did very well.
By the way, someone mentioned that Suzuka Ohgo was the only real Japanese geisha here. That's not true. Youki Kudoh (adult Pumpkin) was also Japanese. So was Kaori Momoi (who plays Mother).
