why does sadie not hav an asian last name???

Okay this is really weird but can someone explain to me why Sadie's last name is Blake?! She's fully asian!

reply

is your last name is your mom's or your dad's last name?

"Remember me, Mr. Schneider? Kenya, 1947."

Her father could have been Anglo-American. Anyway, people have all sorts of names that don't necessarily jibe with their ethnic appearance. In the TV series The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Japanese-born actress Miyoshi Umeki played the housekeeper Mrs. Livingston. And there are plenty of folks with names like O'Leary and O'Grady who don't look the least bit Irish!

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

reply

Define "fully Asian". She obviously has an American accent.

I don't think her name needs explanation.

This girl's last name is Portugese: http://www.cerinadagraca.com/html/
Duval is most definitely not an Asian surname: http://www.calavera.com/duval/
Vanessa Hudgens's ancestry includes Native America, Filipino, Spanish and Chinese and her real name IS Hudgens. Wikipedia says her father is of Irish ancestry.

etc.

I don't think we now live in a world where you can expect someone's surname to match their apparent ethnicity or believe it requires explanation when it doesn't.

Heck, one of my best friends has the surname "Cox" (as in Brian Cox, Courtney Cox, Ronny Cox, etc.), an Anglo-Saxon surname. Yet he's Thai ...

so what, because someone is asian they HAVE to have asian names? you do realize many asians, many generations of asians were born and raised in north america right? and there are many reasons why they wouldnt have asian last names.

wow.....i cant believe people are still so narrow minded about these things in 2010. lol

reply

I can believe they're still this narrow-minded.

reply

hey i'm certainly not narrow minded and am culturally diverse myself. my mum's Irish and dad's Malaysian while i was also brought up in the UK and Asia. i was just curious because she didn't look half cast and not knowing much of American history i wouldn't have thought of the idea that down through her family lines they may have changed their last names upon migration. and yes it's a movie so it isn't a big deal. just one of those moments where curiosity got the better of me.
