Okay this is really weird but can someone explain to me why Sadie's last name is Blake?! She's fully asian!

so what, who cares about asian last name or american last name.. it doesn't matters at all. why are you making such a big deal out of that?

reply

Ok, maybe because the script does not require the lead actress to be Asian? Think fast: who is the American actress of Asian ancestry who is routinely cast in the lead female role when the role does not require an Asian? I'm thinking Lucy Liu is the first. About 35-40 years ago an actress named Irene Tsu (The Glass Bottom Boat) was hearalded as the first (potential) Asian leading lady. Irene Who?

Ps: I bought this DVD because of Luci Liu

reply

Maybe she was adopted.

reply

A lot of Korean girl-babies were adopted during the Korean war by American soldiers to return from the service early.

Lucy Liu's character doesn't seem old enough to be one of them, but she could be second-generation.

You can clearly see her mother is Chinese in this film.

Maybe she changed her name so she wouldn't have to worry about racism, or perhaps it was her pen name?

Its irrelevant really isn't it?

reply

You ever think that hey, maybe her asian mother married an american?

reply

maybe her parents changed their last name when they went to america.... 10,000s did it. kirk douglas did it. walter matthau did it. charles bronson did it. lol. personally i know a couple of people whos parents are from a different country and have adopted a more western name to fit in to their new homeland.

possibly the characters father had been an american...or maybe she had been married previously? or maybe its a film and noone really thought about it. lol

reply

Easily explainable. No, Sadie was not married because her mother was referred to as Mrs. Blake during the identification scene at the morgue. Let's see ... Mrs. (a term denoting marriage) and Blake (a non-Asian surname) pretty much means that her mother MARRIED a NON-ASIAN man. Hence why Sadie has a non-Asian surname. How is this even a topic worthy of a thread?

reply

I dont see the confusion at all:
Last names in most cases comes from the father side; during thew film you never see the father, we can assume the father is not asian then.

Just like a interacial couple of white/black can have either white, black, or mixed-type babies, so do white with asians. Simple.

reply

Her father, who was Asian, was adopted by Mr and Mrs Blake. Yes, the Ohio Blakes.

reply

Mr. Miller has the best explanation. The Ohio Blakes were real nice people too.
