The two Ratliff Daughters - Spoilers

I have only just watched the staircase, and am up to the point where the prosecution has just rested. However I can't escape one nagging feeling.

Has anyone else noticed the similarity between Margaret (oldest daughter) and Mike Petersen? They have the same eyes and nose. She looks remarkably like the two older Petersen sons.

I would hazard a guess that he may be her father and an argument or discovery of the affair led to Elizabeth Ratliff's demise.

The second daughter's timeline also intrigued me. When they went to the cemetery Mr Ratliff died on Oct 21 1983 and Elizabeth Ratliff died Nov 25 1985. This is a 25 month difference. It's also stated that Martha was one and Margaret two when their mother passed.

My question is with the two years between their deaths and if Martha is one, Mr Ratliff couldn't be the father. Even if Martha was 18 months, Mr Ratliff would of left months before he died to prepare for the invasion of Grenada (where he was KIA) and would of been a stretch to be the father.

Has any one else discovered or noticed this? Or is just me??

You'll have to speak up....I'm wearing a towel. :)

I noticed the strong resemblance between the older daughter, Margaret, Mike Peterson and his sons as well. I thought that throughout viewing, esp everytime I saw Margaret sitting next to the son at the trial. I thought many times that there was no way they weren't blood related and that that was partly why Mike Peterson adopted the girls along with receiving trust money from the Ratliff estate.

There is something definitely up with the daughters. They didn't seem all there to me.

Remember how similar Patricia (Mike's first wife and mother of the two boys) looked to Elizabeth? In photos, a longterm good friend of both women had trouble differentiating which woman was which (I believe this occured in the episode where the lawyers go to Germany). If there is a noticeable similarity between the Peterson boys and the Ratcliff daughters, arguably the similiarity comes from their respective mothers, who have been established as looking strikingly alike.

I don't remember/didn't notice Mr. Ratcliff's date of death, but the youngest daughter Martha was 18 in December 2001 (when Kathleen died). That would make her born some point in 1983. I also recall her saying she was around 6months old when her father died (in an early episode where she is being asked questions by one of the defense lawyers). Are you perhaps mistaken that it was stated Martha was 1yr old when her mother died?

It seems to me your reason for doubting the girls' parentage is because they may look slightly alike to the Peterson boys and the dates don't work. However Elizabeth Ratcliff and Patricia Peterson share similar likeness. Also Martha was born in 1983 which 100% works with the dates. So these poor girls who have been through hell probably don't deserve their parentage coming under unnecessary and unsubstantiated fire.

I am 100% with you. I thought Margaret looked amazingly similar to him and his biological sons. In the end scene I was looking at the four children and it was striking how much they looked alike. They did mention that their bio-Mom and Patti looked a lot alike but still, It was uncanny. Beyond that, I don't understand how he ended up with the children when they had a Grandmother, an Aunt and he had a wife besides.

Not sure why both girls ended up with them but in the Diane Fanning true crime book about this, Written In Blood, forgive me for not remembering exactly what was said, but Michael told someone that if they adopted the girls they'd get less money than they were currently getting. So maybe he wanted them so they could get money.

I saw absolutely no resemblance to Mike. What I saw when she was shown talking to Ron and the lawyer at the age of thirty was, "My God, she looks EXACTLY like her mother!"

As to her possibly resembling Mike and his sons? That really doesn't mean anything.

I knew a family when I was a kid who adopted a girl and later had a son of their own. They had many family photographs on the wall of the girl as she aged. In one particular family photograph, she looked to be the spitting image of her ADOPTIVE mother. You could not tell them apart at all.

So, Margaret possibly looking like Mike doesn't mean he's her biological father.

Those girls have some sort of disorder just not sure what it is. Also there was a throwaway line about them being left alone in a house when aged 1 and 2. Summat freaky about all this.

It's since been revealed that a DNA test was conducted and he's not either of the girls biological father.
