Anyone else think Weisz shouldn't have won the oscar?

I just didn't think she deserved it that much. Don't get me wrong, she played her role well, she was a good actress, but I just didn't think to play that particular role an actress would need a lot of skill anyway. I just couldn't understand why Weisz won it. In my opinion, Michelle Williams gave a much better performance in BBM than Weisz did in the Constant Gardner.

Seallymorgan I'm not here to cause a fight, and I don't have a personal problem with Weisz, so stop being bitchy. And Michelle Williams didn't need a lot of screentime to get nominated for the Oscar because she was getting nominated for a supporting role. Also, does anyone actually think that the role Weisz played was a difficult role to play?

I think to win a best actress award, lead or supporting, you need to make the role your own, but I honestly think any half-decent actress could have played Wesiz's role, there just didn't seem to be a lot to that particular part at all. I'll say it again, I still think Weisz gave a good performance and I like her as an actress, I just didn't think she deserved the Oscar.

I think Weisz deserved her Oscar fair and square, but I hate it when posters get cursed out for disagreeing with other people. It's so rude, chicken-sh!t message-board behaviour.

reply

I agree....neither her role nor her acting was outstanding so I understand where you are coming from.....:)

And although Michelle Williams was 'barley' in the movie, she certainly 'made the grain' for me...

No offence but you start a thread attacking an actress, you should expect to be attack by her fans
---

How in any way, shape or form did I attack Rachel Weisz. I thought she acted well in the film but I didn't think it was Oscar worthy. How is that an attack? How could I express my opinion in any other way? You cant accuse people of attacking someone when they BLATANTLY didn't, and its a little stupid to lie on a message board when all the evidence has been written down.

---
Its no ones fault that you have a personal problem with that.
---

Can you point me out the part where I tried to blame someone else? Why are you putting words in my mouth? What is your problem?

And for the rest of your comments, I respect your opinions but I don't agree with them. For the last time, I think Weisz gave a good performance! I thought she was good! In fact I thought she was great. But I just didn't think she did enough to get the Oscar. There just wasn't any scenes that made me think; "Jeez, she is amazing!"

Anyways, that's my 2-cents worth, I shant bring it up again, sorry if I offended anyone even though it was definitely not my intention but I just cant believe how bitchy and aggressive posters on this board are.

You know what? I recently put forth some constructive criticism on the Twilight Saga movies. It was not a good decision for me to do. Apparently, they have a ton of obsessive-compulsive fanatics that swiftly accuse me of being an insensitive jerk who is on the attack. Just like you, I never attacked anyone or anything, but yet I was made to feel like the world's biggest ass and I lost two friendships over it (which makes me realize that those weren't real friendships for starters). All I can do is shake my head and move on. This world is full of people who do not know how to think for themselves or refuse to think for themselves because they are too lazy to do so. I am glad that you are not one of those people. Keep thinking critically and speaking your mind regardless of how many ignorant people hastily jump down your throat without first comprehending the facts.

No Ryan, he shouldn't take my name in vain, also isn't there something in the bible about not lying?

Obviously, you've never read Rahab's story.

Why should I? I doubt he went to the bother of reading mine.

reply

Haha, Rahab was a woman, not a man. And you have a story ?

"I only hear you too, Sidney."

reply

Surely the fact that I couldn't be bothered to even google the name Rahab shows how little I'm bothered.

Yes I do have a story actually, it might not be the best story ever told but it does have one hell of a protagonist.

You gotta love a good protagonist. And you gotta love an antagonist that forces the protagonist to rise above his or her means.

Update:

Upon investigation it turns out my story is the greatest story ever told. Apologies for the confusion.

I agree with the majority here, Rachel Weisz deserved her Oscar.

reply

I agree with the OP, pretty much across the board, and Maria Bello's performance in AHoV was also stronger. I didn't think Tess was a terribly nuanced role. Her scenes with Feinnes weren't bad, but the stident advocacy of African causes was really not a stretch. This really isn't to attack Weisz -- surely you can say an actor had a relatively easy role and not impugn that actor's talents?

reply

I think that Rachel Weisz did a good job, she played her role perfectly and I don't think anyone else could have played it better...BUT: somehow, she lacks something...her performance is nothing special, it's good, but missed something. Nobody could have played it better, but 1000 actresses could have played it just as good.

Weisz gave a very layered performance in THE CONSTANT GARDENER.

Weisz played a seductress, an idealist, a possible borderline candidate (who would have a baby in that hospital?), a loving wife with secrets and at the end a martyer. In other words, her character was so hard to pen down it made her so much more interesting.

Michelle Williams played the devastated wife throughout the movie.

she played an extremely complex character in the movie which had a mission. It was really a great role for an actress, as she is very passionate and revolted.

reply

Agreed.
She did a good job, but it wasn't the best performance of the year.
Her competition was pretty strong too.
It just goes to show that hollywood loves the low budget, liberal stuff.

I dunnno, I've seen both Michelle Willams' and Rachel Wiesz's performances, and it's impossible for me to pick the better of the two. I think both were very deserving of the Oscar, and the trouble is that there can be only one winner. I would have been happy either way it turned out, between the two of them. Williams gave a powerful, emotionally affecting performance, and Weisz successfully carried half of a movie on her own, carefully balancing between enigma and compassionate appeal. Both performances were wonderful.

"the movie should have had more Oscars as well. "

How many oscars was it nominated for?
Seems to me to win more oscars, you need to be nominated first.

reply

I would have liked to seen these nominations:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor (Fiennes)
Best Supporting Actress (Weisz)
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Film Editing
Best Visual Effects
Best Cinematography
Best Score

I thought Fiennes was just as good as Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote".

reply

[deleted]

It wasn't the best picture of the year.
it wasn't the best director of the year (are you serious?)
Best Actor - who didn't deserve to be there again?
best supporting actress - well, she won. I thought she stole it, but she won.
best screenplay- perhaps but seeing as it was nominated, its a moot point.
best editing - you must be one of those people who liked the shaky cameras! it WAS nominated, so moot point.
visual effects - sorry dude, but this film didn't have the slightest chance of winning a category dominated by expensive, high tech effect wizards.
cinematography - which of the nominated films wasn't BETTER than TCG? Who 'didn't deserve it'?
score - nominated, so moot.
I thought Fiennes was good too. But Hoffman was awesome, Joaquin was amazing, and Strathairn probably SHOULD have won. This was not Fiennes best work. I see him winning one, but not for this film.

I saw the movie last week and i totally loved it. Rachel Weisz was great and she deserved getting the Oscar for her amazing performance.

reply

You don't say?

reply

Rachel Weisz definately deserved the oscar for her performance.

reply

Picture-You are correct, it was not the Best Picture of the Year. Was it in my top five...yes. So wouldn't make sense that if it were in my top five I would nominate it.

Director-Same as above

Actor- I would have been fine with Fiennes instead of Howard

S. Actress- Enough said

Screenplay-it was nominated.

Editing- It was edited very well. It was all pieced together and it was really good. It was nominated.

Visual Effects- You are correct on tht eon

Cinematography- I liked the way it was shot.

Score- It was nominated

I said I would have liked to see these nominations, not winners. I loved Hoffman in Capote and Capote was my 3rd favorite film of the year. I was not bashing any other nominees. Its not that big of a deal to totally bash what I said.

reply

"Its not that big of a deal to totally bash what I said. "
I wasn't bashing what you said.
I was adding my opinion and explaining it.
If you liked this film that much, good.
I didn't.

Your opinion is fine with me.
